In every nations this set of people is certainly there, many people work for years and gather experience, become exposed to politics and leadership, admire positions and opportunities to rule, if finally by virtue of elections you're vote into an office they assume a legal rights to steal and loot public funds,
They same person who was once working with all Obedience to serve their boss, will in a long run forget the past and pursuits selfish interest, I don't know if leadership automatically baptize one into corruption in some Africa nations and other part of the world using lobby as an approach to stealing public funds. But can nation like Nigeria that is so much with corruption fought corruption? Since the supposed leaders who was supposed to fight corruption are involved?

I guess when someone thinks that he obtain a lot of powers, then he might abused it for his own advantage. Specially in politics that there are a lot of temptations. Maybe someone will go and go and wanted to lobby something. And in turn those groups are going to offer un-corrupted politician. And so this politicians seeing bags of money being offered to them has no choice but to give in.

I mean who would dare not to accept millions and easy money? So that is the thing there, it's your political will. If you are weak then for sure you will have to accept the bribe and that is the start of your career as being corrupt politicians.

You wouldn't see the innermost characters of people until they find themselves in authority where they are saddled with power to carry out their duties, that is when you will truly see what a person is truly capable of. A lot of people criticize corrupt politicians but if they find themselves in similar positions they would do worse than those that they are criticizing, so it is very easy to condemn when you're not in their shoes, it doesn't mean that I'm giving excuse for bad leaders but to show that a lot of people have corrupt minds. It takes people with exceptional characters to enter into power and not follow corrupt politicians to be stealing public funds, some will argue that if you can't beat them you should join them which is a wrong ideology. The problem with countries where corrupt leaders occupy is that if they find out that an aspirant into a political office has integrity they will do everything possible to make sure that such a politician doesn't succeed.

They same person who was once working with all Obedience to serve their boss, will in a long run forget the past and pursuits selfish interest, I don't know if leadership automatically baptize one into corruption in some Africa nations and other part of the world using lobby as an approach to stealing public funds.
The actual fact is that, their are so many characters an individual may have that will never be out if you don't give him money or power, because poverty is one thing that humbles people to the extent where you will think that they are truly humble. It's only those set of people that are genuinely humble that power or money wouldn't intoxicate.

Majority of poor people or those that have never taste power wishes to go places or do bad things, but they don't have the means to carry it out, that's why they stay low key, pretending to be humble, but once they are exposed to key decision making positions, that's when you are going to see their true colours.

I can't say a country  like Nigeria can never change, what I'm sure of is that it's going to be very difficult. The disease of corruption has spread widely and deeply in Nigeria, it's no longer just the leaders but the masses too, It'll take a leader who's brave and strong enough to cause a change in Nigeria, it's going to take a long time for the change to be sustained because the leader himself will be attacked by his fellow leaders, he'll need to stand on  his integrity if he really wants to bring about change in Nigeria.

It'll also take years, but there'll be a change if he keeps striving, let's take Singapore and Georgia for an example these countries was once a corrupt one maybe even worse than Nigeria's current state, but all it took was one leader to say No and right now they're better than ever.

I understand the point you are making but I want to correct an impression so you don't stereotype some people. Corruption is universal, it has no race, no country and indeed no religion. If you know corruption happening in some of the countries you think there are no corruption, you will be surprised. The reason the corruption in Africa seems to be noticeable is because there is no acceptable limits set which makes it possible for public servants to loot with reckless abandon. Furthermore, there is little to no consequence for being corrupt in some African countries which is what embolden public officials to perpetrate the act.

Personally I don't think that leadership can automatically turn someone into corrupt person. But you see power without strong accountability can make corruption easier. Even those that go into office with good intentions can change when the system allows the people to misuse pubic funds without any serious consequences. If Nigeria really wants to fight corruption, they are not supposed to depend only on the character of individual leaders. Nigeria needs strong institution, independent investigation, transparency and a real punishment for offenders, all these things need to work together to reduce corruption. Corruption will become more harder to practice if nobody is above the law.

To be honest, it's really hard to find corruption. Not just in politics, everywhere there's a corruption.

Just like what you've said, some people started from the bottom, who once questioned "why these people in the position are stealing funds" when they're already earning enough and rich enough. You'd feel unfair because you're fighting fair. However, the longer you witness these kind of actions, and the more you get exposed in this system, it slowly becomes normal in your perspective. It usually started from small amounts, and you'd think that it's just normal because other people does it too. And they're even stealing way more bigger amount of money. This kinf of mindset affects your perception about it, until you also adopted and get used to what others are doing. You experienced having more money, a lavish lifestyle that you're enjoying. And that's how you slowly forget that you're already becoming part of the corruption.

It's hard to break corruption, especially in the politics as it becomes a chain from smaller branches up to the biggest. It's common and normalized and you alone cannot stop it. When you entered that system, either you become a part of it or you'll just leave because you can't bear to be like them.

Just as in Nigeria, it's the same in the Philippines. There are too many political colors that makes us divided. But I still believe that there will be a way to fight corruption. And just as you've said about the leader being involved in the massive corruption in my country through flood control projects and other sorts of schemes. There's a time for reckoning. Let's take a look at the other progressive countries too, there's probably a time of their era that they've also faced the same dilemma but its people has stood for it and fought for the treatment that they deserve.

This topic will fit for politics and society board or then Nigeria local board since it mentioned the country for a case study. Op move it there.

There is this summary I saw online that says "there is a difference between who is humble and who life humbled". People pretend to be humble and with great plans for their country when they are in far reach of the position of power but give them the opportunity that is when their true character is revealed.

I rather believe a wealthy man critiquing a bad system for what it is than a poor man doing it. Cause I do not for sure know what he would have done better or worse finding himself in the position he criticizes.

Yes, when people are in the trenches we are humble to the earth because we seek loyalty, favor and support but when in the cause of life you climb the ladder of leadership you scum to what others are doing in the system, that's why the power keep revolving within the same party or groups of cartels or controls by God-fatherism and we are tired of this hardship societies are experiencing because of incompetent leadership or leaders who rather thinks of luxury cars, mansion, holidays, vacations and self-centeredness, we need better and creative idea leaders who are will to undo this system.
It is crazy to witness all that unexpected changes in people you did not by their preceding words and actions believe they were going to perpetrate the very system they were vehemently calling out.

The weakness and inefficiencies of the institutions to hold people in leadership roles to accountability is what has sustained the disposition of bad corrupt leadership in any society.

It gets very weak to the extent that strong men are made, strong people that view them-selves stronger than the institutions of the state and have captured the state like a private property. In such societies substantial transformation are not relatable with the people cause all what the leaders do is formulate ways to keep the people weak and poor to revolt.

When you say a lot of people I will say you are been fair to most of our leaders, in my own country I find it very difficult to identify any single politician who choose the masses than himself, our leaders do not care about us and the root of all this is that godfatherism because they are just being elected but does not have full power to execute projects and that is why we keep on seeing a lot of bad governance.

In my country the son of nobody cannot find his way to that up despite he have the masses behind him now, our electoral system is also corrupt, because they are just there as an institution which will all see as an independent institution but they are not serving the purpose, they are solely depending on the government in time of making decision on who to win in every election.

This isn't common only in Nigeria but all the underdeveloped nations are currently suffering from such circumstances. Politicians whom once promised would take care of your health, education and infrastructure disappears until the next election. They beg for vote when the time of election comes ahead and make fake promises but once they are selected they even forget their relatives because of the protocol they carry. They become proud and selfish as they are deceived by their minds that the concern seat will stay forever with them but unfortunately it doesn't stay.
Secondly when the base is corrupt it is obvious that the subordinates will be corrupt as well. A child learn from his parents and so a young politician learn from his leader and vice versa. Grin

I would say that leadership corrupts people but this is not always the case. On the contrary if there is no effective oversight of power, then the opportunities for corruption increase. The same person can work honestly in one place and then change to a system where there is no accountability for his work. So it is difficult to say that just electing a new leader will solve the problem.  It is more important that the law is applied equally to everyone and that independent institutions work properly. Because where there is accountability, corruption becomes at least much more difficult.

Being a politician is not that easy, even if they try to become corruption-free, they are just pushed to the limit or be on their side so they can keep looting. When we see a lader is not doing what they promised to become when they ask for votes then just pick the other one in the next election, we don't really have a choice. And the reason why they become such is just can be any reason.

Nigeria is not the most corrupt country in the world, even though it still ranks high on the CPI, If I am not even mistaken, Nigeria is ranked as the 36th most corrupt country in the world, but that still doesn’t mean that things can’t be change for good.

Corruption can end in Nigeria but for that to happen, the country will have to restructure everything, starting from the highest offices in government. If Nigeria had a leadership like that of Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso and they introduced a strict new constitution where thieves, those who accept bribes, and anyone engaged in corruption face immediate capital punishment (like death by hanging) even the insecurity in Nigeria would come to an end.

With all the blessings Nigeria already has, Nigeria could stand on the same level in GDP as Dubai and other leading nations. Nigeria is already blessed with an enormous of natural resources, but greed and corruption are what keep us down.

You know someone told me that if everyone is doing bad the one doing good will seem like the bad one, in a system of corruption that has some how been made like a norm, the ones that have it in mind to do good will not be given the opportunity to rise to some extent except by some other extra force that can help that person, if not it will be a difficult one for a leader in a corrupt nation to be good,
The solution to this is to take action by impeachment of the already existing leaders, before a good thing can come in the bad has to be removed first, that looks like a reliable way to restore a nation to its best form
If not rising of good leader will be dissolved by the bad ones.

In every nations this set of people is certainly there, many people work for years and gather experience, become exposed to politics and leadership, admire positions and opportunities to rule, if finally by virtue of elections you're vote into an office they assume a legal rights to steal and loot public funds,

In some developing countries including in my country becoming an official is actually quite expensive because when they run for office, they even have to distribute their money as bribes to be elected so that when they initially do bad things, they will certainly find alternatives to get benefits when they take office and this condition always repeats because they want to return capital from the candidacy they have done.

They will consider this as a necessity because corrupt officials make every effort in the beginning to be in the seat of office. When the results are not in line with expectations then as much as possible they should make this as a field to cultivate their own wealth.
This has always been the case in my country but I also won't blame the official completely because this also starts from the people who are always tempted by small change when it's like bait to let rats into rice barns.

~snip
It is always like this in a corrupt system, in a system like this when people get the opportunity to serve in a position where they can access money; they steal because they feel it is an opportunity for them that they may not get again. In a system where stealing is tolerated, people do whatever they like because, at the end of the day, there are no consequences for whatever actions they take.

Where there is corruption, people in power lose the ability to be honest, and this is because there is no law for public servants who loot public funds.

But I bet you, in a functioning system where laws exist and there are consequences for politicians who steal public funds, you will hardly see people steal because they understand that there is no compromising of the law.

The people of the country must come forward to fight corruption first, then the politicians of the country. When do leaders get a chance to commit corruption? When the people of the country are afraid to protest or forget to protest. If the leaders are corrupt, it is natural that government employees or people in other professions will become corrupt. So change yourself first and change the people around you, then call for change at the state level. Remember, no leader directly commits fraud in elections, rather many ordinary people have a hand in this fraud. These people, greedy for a little money, create an opportunity for a corrupt leader to win the election and commit corruption, when the leaders do not get helpers to commit corruption, they will not be able to commit corruption.

Corruption has spread everywhere in Nigeria. From a farmer to the government of the country, almost everyone is involved in corruption, how is it possible to control this corruption? Where to start? We cannot find any direction. Only by suppressing corruption from the grassroots level, it is possible to eradicate corruption from the entire country.
That is not just based on Nigeria, it is true for everywhere. I am not from there or not following news, so I have no idea what's going on in Nigeria, no clue. However, the thing about the current status is that in the entire world, we are living bad life because of corruption.

Let me put it this way, if we had zero corruption all over the world (which is impossible I know) we would all live a great life, without a doubt, zero problems. In a world with no wars and no corruption, the entire world would live great.

It is easy to become a politician all you have to do is to be strong financially then use your money to sponsor a stronge candidate if he wins he will fix you in a good position so that the amount you spent can be recovered in ten fold. Politicians can't stop looting public funds because it is in the nature and they believe that since voters can't vote them out due to their numerous rigging during election they can steal to use some of the money to lopy their ways in to continue stealing.
