JOY was nowhere to be found in Sitio Malipayon, Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City, where a dispute over repeated requests for a share of online gambling winnings ended in violence at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, July 19, 2026.

A 33-year-old man, identified by police only as Joey, was beaten and shot in the left arm. He remained confined at the Cebu City Medical Center and was in stable condition.

Inayawan Police Station identified the suspect only as Roma, 28, an unemployed resident of the same sitio. He was arrested during a hot pursuit operation, and officers recovered a .38-caliber revolver allegedly used in the shooting.

Investigators said the confrontation stemmed from the victim’s repeated requests for a P50 share whenever the suspect won money from playing the online game Scatter.

Police said the suspect told investigators he had won P500 from the game the previous week. Since then, the victim allegedly asked for a share each time they met and became upset when refused. The suspect also claimed the victim would take his cigarettes without permission.

Dispute escalates

The disagreement escalated into a fistfight before the suspect allegedly drew a handgun and shot the victim, striking him in the left arm.

The victim was taken to the Cebu City Medical Center, where he received treatment for his injury.

Responding officers arrested the suspect in a hot pursuit operation shortly after the shooting. Police said they also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the attack.

The suspect will be facing a frustrated homicide complaint.

The rate at which some gamblers feel entitled to your wins can be very annoying. I interpret the conduct of the wounded gambler on the streets as bully since he is always taking his belongings forcefully and without permission simply because he refused to share the winning. There might be other little details that led to the fight, but the pestering someone and forcing them to share their wins is unnecessarily and very disturbing.

He contributed very well to his injury, but the other guy went too extreme by shooting him, even though he acted on anger and impulse, still he went too far with his reaction.

This is the main reason I stopped gambling in physical sportsbook, in my region if you win a substantial amount and you don't do a little giveaway, street boys can even go to the extent of laying ambush and robbing you of your wins on your way home. I prefer gambling privately and nobody knows if I win or loose.

Such a ridiculous story to hear, why will someone pester a gambler who won a bet to share part of his winnings with him. People are just so entitled to what is not theirs. I have heard stories of someone who won a bet at a physical casino and some gamblers who witnessed the winning asked him to share some little fractions of the winnings with them, but he refused then in the evening he was robbed and suspicion was raised on those who asked him for money from his winning.
    But how did that gambler get the gun? is it that gun is legalized in the Philippines? and again, was the gambler under influence of drugs or alcohol because i can't still imagine if it was only because the guy was pestering him that made him do that act.

Sometimes approach matters. You need a favour from somebody you don't just become aggressive towards the person, you have to be polite with the person rather than being too troublesome. The gambler could have given him the money as it is nothing compared to what he had won but the way and manner at which the begger harassed is what I think got him provoked to have shot him. The gambler failed law buy doing such and will go in for it. At first his did he got the gun? Is it a licenced gun, who game him the gun? Of course he will tell the police and court he had it for protection against the harassment but did he reported the matter to the police? There are many questions for him to answer and it was not alright for him to have taken the law into his hands.

But still, killing him will never be the solution. It will only put your life compromised, just like how the gambler is.

It is possible that there is a background story to this that the gambler who is being pestered by the other individual has also been in a position where they did the pestering and then the individual who is pestering them currently succumbed by maybe giving them or sharing whatever they had so it is now like he is expecting the same from the gambler who has now won but since the gambler has refused to reciprocate, it has resulted in a fight. I blame the gambler and not the person begging because there are other ways to resolve the situation not by shooting the person.

I understand verily how annoying it feels when you have made certain wins and you are just assuming that the winning may had recovered you from some of your losses, someone will want to ruin the good times with the  claiming that you should share the profits with him.

I also understand that only those you are familiar with can talk to you like that because they are aware that a win of one is not bad winning for all because you have been playing with your funds, so it is no worth the disturbance of the other guy regularly asking for his share like that.

Perhaps this can only be found valid if there was an agreements while the bet was placed.

This is clearly harassment and disrespect for the property of others. If this incident is as described by the police then he himself unnecessarily escalated the situation.

Pulling out gun and shooting in response can never be justified. Shooting a man because he bothered him for 50 bucks is not self defense. It is an example of complete loss of control. Now he is facing frustrated homicide case and the hassle of a few hundred pesos ruined both of their live.

To me, this incident is more than a story of winning or losing gamble, it is a story of human greed, entitlement and failure to control anger. We cannot claim rights over someone else's winning, nor do we have the right to resort to violence just because someone annoys us.

Some would say ''deserved'' for that person who keep pestering the gambler. Because let's be honest, this is already a sign of being disrespectful and harassment, and anyone who's in the same situation will feel the same way.

There is no way a person in their right senses would make such a big trouble for such a small amount of money, to the extent of risking their own physical well-being and even going as far as stealing tobbaco as a way to bug other people.

I am not a smoker, but from my own experience I am very aware on how violent smokers can be when others mess with their cigarettes.
Thankfully he was not shot in the head or in the chest, which could have cost him his life, specially if they were located in rural areas.

I am surprised at the level of entitlement coming from the gambler friend to the money owner. Even if he entered the gambling with your advise or recommendation I still don’t think it’s enough for you to harm him because you want him to redeem some of the money to you. Unless the friend who is a gambler is a thief then he decided to rob the friend with the disguise of asking him to give him money because this is a pure robbery by a friend to the point of threatening his life with a gun and shooting him over. This has become a lesson to most of us out there who cannot remain quite about your own wins and that is a bad character as it can do more harm than good to you to be flamboyantly discussing your wins and other financial issues with your friends or others.

Seems like his friend kept testing his emotional limit. Just imagining it already makes me feel annoyed. But what he did was an overreaction. He should have controlled his anger better. That amount of money was very small, but he had a gun. Clearly, the problem wasn't the money. I think it was about accumulated frustration that eventually exploded. He probably has anger issues as well because in that situation he seemed to handle it badly, even though his friend had been pestering him from the beginning.

The guy who was pestering the gambler actually deserves what he got, because why couldn't he gamble himself, if he truly needed to have a share of the profits that was gotten through gambling, but rather trying to intimate people for their own hard earned money. And as it looks right now, it's obvious that wasn't the first gambler that individual was pestering, as it is obvious he might have been doing that long time ago and always got away with it, but unfortunately he literally mess with the wrong person and got shot in the arm..So in think this should be a lesson to the majority of people out there who wouldn't want to mind their business, but always want to take advantage of others.

Given how small the cause of this conflict was, it escalated into a shooting incident. I think these 2 individuals are on drugs. It is very common knowledge in the PH that most of the drug addicts or users are into gambling, and when they get a win, they tend to share with each other so they can enjoy the moment while the drugs are still in effect. When the drug effect subsides, that is the time when they become cranky and get easily upset even with small things that bother them. This right here is a perfect example of that. I've seen people from the slums get stabbed, wounded by sharp objects, or beaten so badly, but they were never taken into the hospital because the cause of the conflicts is due to drugs, which are most of the time related to gambling money as well.
50 Pesos is just a very small amount, I would have given that person what he asked for. However, for methheads, every penny counts, lol.

The gambler has the right whethere to give him part of the money he won or not and not for the guy that was shut to dictate how much he was to collect from the money. Some people are highly authoritative you know.
The gambler must have lost so much money before winning this one, so it might be hard for him to share from that money to anyone.
Shooting is the worse thing he did, no matter his explanations the government may not take it lightly with him as unto a defensive approach against the other guys intimidating him on his money

I don't know why some gamblers feel that they're entitled to the winnings of others. Some of these nuisance don't even just beg for a little share, they seem to demand a significant amount. It seems they believe they have the right over the winnings of fellow gamblers. Worse, if not given, they'd get angry and call you names. What would you do in a similar situation, when a stranger, a beggar, persistently demands to share your winnings with you, and also takes something that belongs to you (cigarettes) without your permission?

Attempted murder of what? A hand? The gunshot wound was to the hand, which clearly indicates the gambler merely warned the beggar, but certainly didn't intend to kill. Plus, why didn't the investigation take into account the fact that the beggar himself persistently provoked the situation? Of course, discussing this is somewhat beyond the scope of gambling.

Of course, this will irritate any adequate person and therefore, I don't at all condemn the reaction of that gambler (but I don't justify his methods).
