This story is crazy, a guy from Cebu(a city in the Philippines) was beaten and shot in the arm by a gambler after he repeatedly asked him to share some of his wins with him. So, according to the article, a gambler won around 500 pesos($8) a week ago before the incident happened, and the guy who got shot asked the gambler to share some of the winnings with him(he was asking for 50 pesos, which is $0.81), but the guy refused, since then he kept pestering the gambler to share some of his winnings whenever they see each other, the guy asking for some of the winnings from the gambler would get angry and take some of the gambler's cigarrete without permission if the gambler refuse to share some of the winnings. Eventually, the issue escalated to a fist fight, and the gambler pulled out a gun and shot the guy on his arm. The guy was rushed to the hospital and received treatment, and the gambler was arrested and is being charged with frustrated homicide.

Just curious, is anyone else pissed off at the guy begging for some of the gambler's winnings despite what happened to him? I mean, I know the amount is extremely small, and he got shot, but to pester the gambler since the time he won and gets angry and steal a cigarette from the gambler if the gambler refuses to give him some of his winnings is just ridiculous.
Only very low quality people can do such a heinous and despicable thing because here the person who won 500 pesos equal to 8 dollars in gambling and from there demanded 50 pesos equal to $0.81 from him which is very small. However, the person who demanded this small amount of money is absolutely insignificant and a low class person otherwise he would not have demanded such a small amount of money and would never have shot a gambler for it. However, I think that such people should be severely punished based on such an incident because a human life is very insignificant to such people. Here if the man's bullet had not hit his hand but had hit his chest or head then maybe the gambler's life would have been lost for this small amount of money so I think that such low quality people should be severely punished from which everyone can learn a suitable lesson.

I cant imagine if someone would piss me off that much that I would have to use weapon to make him stop bothering me. However I think that beggar was really a stupid guy, because I am sure he was warned not once and not twice that he will get shot if he does not stop. I would not have used a weapon, but if a guy keeps bothering me, shows aggression and takes my stuff without permission, I think that guy deserves a punch to the face.
People can do anything for money, as they won't mind if its their family or friends and its not actually good for one to behave such way, for money that won't last forever and this kind of case are often cause by people who have poor mentality. If not, why on earth will one threatened or harassed because of the issue of wins that is being done by luck. But for the sake of peace, its good for one to walk away from such situations or better still leave the money for them before the case will escalate to violence that one's life might be cut short and just like they said, prevention is better than cure.

Sometimes approach matters. You need a favour from somebody you don't just become aggressive towards the person, you have to be polite with the person rather than being too troublesome. The gambler could have given him the money as it is nothing compared to what he had won but the way and manner at which the begger harassed is what I think got him provoked to have shot him. The gambler failed law buy doing such and will go in for it. At first his did he got the gun? Is it a licenced gun, who game him the gun? Of course he will tell the police and court he had it for protection against the harassment but did he reported the matter to the police? There are many questions for him to answer and it was not alright for him to have taken the law into his hands.
Even though you're the most polite person in the world, you must learn to accept NO for an answer, your requests must not be favored because you're polite. You must learn to lower your expectation from people. Some people are unnecessarily entitled to your funds because they're friends, brothers and family members and it is very wrong.

This might not be the first time the friend is harassing him this way, it may be accumulated aggression, but that does not justify the unnecessary use of arms on an unarmed person. He might claim self-defense, but I think the action was pre-planned.

This story is crazy...

Well, I wouldn't call this a crazy story... It's more like a ridiculous story. 3:30 AM, stealing cigarettes, arguing for a few dollars. And in the end, one guy got shot, and the other ended up in jail... for what?

And I don't even see this as a gambling story... this is simply two people arguing for a few dollars, and turning that argument into disaster.
Imagine only less than $1 others are willing to shoot who do not give such money? It's already outrageously insane of her, and not commensurate with her medical expenses.

Is this a personal vendetta or is the man drunk and unaware of what he is doing? This is where gambling gets bad because of news like this.

A strange story, this case should be properly handled by the law, the attitude of both subjects is uncalled for because I do not see any reason the other guy should be shot because of stealing a cigarette though it is rude to take another person's stuff without permission, but it was unfortunate for the gambler, he fell for the temptation it is understandable that the guy must have tormented him so much but shooting out of anger is never a solution, at least it would be better to speak out if he does not want to share his wins instead of getting himself into this trouble because he is going to be spending more money now to resolve all this issues.

What he did was quite annoying and even though he should've received some punishment for those actions, I don't think he deserved to get shot in the arm [I have a feeling that's not the whole picture (perhaps they've intentionally omitted some details)].
- Does anyone here know the maximum penalty for a gambler with frustrated homicide? Some places say up to 6 years, while others say 12 years!

We can see how serious the consequences can be. It was only about one dollar, yet a person was killed because of it. Once something like that happens, there’s really nothing we can do to reverse it. We have to be responsible and never allow gambling to completely take over and control us. We should think carefully before making any decision because, in the end, we are responsible for the consequences of our actions.

Gambling can cause or result to a lot of things so this is one of the things that happened when people give themselves into gambling and selling of property is also one of them. However, no matter how bad a situation is in gambling someone should not indulge in a quarrel or fight because some people are walking  corps or a walking dead that is why sometimes a slight touch can make someone collapse and die and people won't know the person has gone already.

---
Instead of just giving him 50 PHP, it went too far that he ended up in jail.
Instead of him out there gambling, he's now in the jail and suffering because of his own decisions.

I did a google search and Frustrated Homicide is still bailable. Nevertheless, that supposed money that he'll be using for bail was supposed to be the money that he'll be using to gamble. Cheesy I don't know, but I mean if that person annoys you all the time, just give him the money that he wants to as long as it's not that huge which in this case, wasn't that huge (less than a dollar). I wonder why it escalated that much that he could just give the money that this person is asking from this gambler. I have no experience with regards to this one, but if I'm in that situation, I'll just simply give it to him. I mean 50 PHP isn't that big of an amount that he's asking. As for stealing the cigarette, that could be prevented if only he gave the money to him.

This is just ridiculous and wrong decision-making. I feel bad for the gambler, but it's his own decisions so... yeah. As for the one who got shot, I do hope that he learned a lesson after what happened to him. Cheesy

Ridiculous indeed but I think the gambler still over reacted by pulling out a gun and shooting the begger guy on the arm, now he's going to possibly do some jail term while the begger guy who was actually the one that looked got trouble will get treated of the gun wound, then get discharged from the hospital and then walk out a free man.

I honestly think this incident has very little to nothing to do with gambling but every thing to do with anger and what it could result to if not teemed or controlled. Yes, I understand the victim is a gambler alright, and the begger guy was begging because the gambler(who I assume as the victim) won some money through gambling, but if only the victim had applied a bit of anger control, he wouldn't be going to prison.
But another question is how did he come about the gun? Is carrying firearms legal for everyone in the Philippines? If no, then is there a possibility that he could be involved in other forms of crime like stealing from people using that firearm?

This wasn’t really about gambling alone. The man simply asked for money, and when the other person refused to give him any, he killed him. Maybe he already had some anger toward that person because that’s such a shallow reason to kill someone. He could have just walked away and accepted that he wasn’t getting any money.

Besides, we don’t know whether the victim had only won a small amount and was still recovering from his previous losses. Maybe he was just trying to win back his money, and what he had was only part of the money he had already lost.

Unfortunately, he was killed because of it, while the person who killed him will now end up in prison. He will probably regret it later. He allowed his anger to take over, and now he may spend many years behind bars. If he had been thinking clearly, he wouldn’t have killed someone for such a shallow reason.

I don't understand why some people have to be this naive to that extent, you are being persistent on someone to share you some portion of his winning in gambling, what is ridiculous request is this, when I first start reading this story, I thought that he was indebted to him and that it was why he was pestering at the request to receive some motion from his winning, but just on a neutral ground for someone to be begging in such manner shows his high level of shamelessness, taking someone repeatedly without owing you anything just because you wanted to share from his winning fortune, he was just lucky that the short was not straight to his head, only the arm got affected.

Having that kind of person who keep on pestering on you is really absurd and annoying. What if the gambler is at loss, and in very bad mood, so that person could probably receive the kind of treatment he deserves.

But still, killing him will never be the solution. It will only put your life compromised, just like how the gambler is.

Patience is free, but not every gambler can be patient especially to those people who have no respect to their rights and privacy.

Maybe we can begin to avoid issues like this by keeping our gambling activities in private. This thing is common everywhere, people see gambling winning as a free money, they never consider the risk you passed through or how much you have lost before that winning. They don't care if it covers your lose or not. The worst part of it is that even agents that work in gambling centre are found of this attitude asking for a commission if you play with them and win.

Killing in this manner deserve a severe jail term. You can not just pull a trigger on someone for begging you for money. I don't know much about the policy of that country but is that how easy it is for their citizens to own a gun? I'm just curious.

On the one hand, the guy probably brought some of the hostility on himself. It's quite possible he wasn't mentally well or was struggling with some kind of substance addiction. It's unfortunate that people like that often can't be held accountable in ways such as mandatory community service or other legal consequences. Their persistent and intrusive behavior can provoke angry reactions from others. But shooting someone is a completely different matter. That's way over the line. Acts like that should be dealt with firmly, and severe punishment is absolutely necessary.

That was such a senseless act. If the victim had known that the person asking for one dollar was capable of killing someone, he probably would have just given him the money without hesitation. But no one could have expected something so terrible to happen over such a small amount.

The victim was supposed to be enjoying and celebrating, but instead, he ended up being killed simply because he refused to give one dollar. Still, the victim cannot be blamed for what happened. The only person responsible is the killer, who was clearly out of his mind.

Whatever the situation was, everyone must remain responsible for their actions. Gambling should never lead to one person being killed while another ends up in prison.

This is when because emotions overwhelm us, gambling is the trigger, and that is why it happens, for us the money that we ask for may be relatively very small and it does not matter if we ask for that amount, say candy money.
I see this as a moral degradation in which a person asks intentionally and feels he or she deserves money from someone else's gambling winnings.
It is ironic that something like this happened, and finally suffered great damage because of the gunshot wound in his hand.

What a great moral lesson

~snip~
It is not mandatory to share the winnings with others, whether it is anyone but ourselves who really want to share it, but basically it is our own winnings and with bets that we do ourselves but the case will be different if the bets made are done simultaneously either from capital or there is an agreement made before making the bet.
With this case I think someone who shot him was heavily addicted because he saw the number of wins that were not how certain the action was outside of logic, unless the number of wins was large.

This is both tragic and ridiculous. The 50 pesos demanded is nothing compared to what you get. I mean, it's better for the victim to give in for their own safety, especially when faced with someone's stubborn nature.

So far, I've never minded if some friends ask for a share of my winnings. Because fellow responsible and conscious gamblers understand that winnings should be shared with friends. Even when I'm alone and win big, I'll call a few close friends to share the winnings and send them tips.

I can't entirely blame that gambler because if I were him, I'd be really annoyed when someone kept bothering me and asking for money like that. The difference is, I probably wouldn't shoot him, but I would hit him pretty hard.
His actions were already on the level of being annoying and demeaning to others. If it were just an occasional thing, it might have been just a joke, but to bother him every time we met and even take his cigarette without asking was truly disrespectful.
That guy just learned the most valuable lesson of his life, not everyone has the same level of patience and he needs to know his limits.

I'm a kind of person that always accept for persistence in positive approach but not in this manner, where will you have to keep disturbing the winner to give you something you are not entitled to have, he did not promised him, neither does he make any debt to be settled upon the other partner, I must say that this person has no shame, requesting for gambling share from someone's fortune is totally abnormal and strange at the same time because, would have gotten to the gambler's nerve before it took such action against him and got him injured.
