So, according to the article, a gambler won around 500 pesos($8) a week ago before the incident happened, and the guy who got shot asked the gambler to share some of the winnings with him(he was asking for 50 pesos, which is $0.81), but the guy refused,
It's very tragic, whether $8 or $0.81 is very valuable in the Philippines, to the point where shootings occur, wow this is truly beyond common sense, what do we get for $8 in the Philippines to the point where shootings occur.

In this case, in my opinion, the man who won the gambling bet should not have committed any unlawful action, we as friends can if we win the bet buy cigarettes for our friends, anyway how much does a pack of cigarettes cost in the Philippines, is one pack of cigarettes more than $8 of the gambling winnings.

I really can't understand such a friend, how stingy he is in sharing a little of his winnings, the friend only asks for cigarettes and nothing more, this is really a shameful and ridiculous incident.

This is when because emotions overwhelm us, gambling is the trigger, and that is why it happens, for us the money that we ask for may be relatively very small and it does not matter if we ask for that amount, say candy money.
I see this as a moral degradation in which a person asks intentionally and feels he or she deserves money from someone else's gambling winnings.
It is ironic that something like this happened, and finally suffered great damage because of the gunshot wound in his hand.

What a great moral lesson
In my location, some people are full-time gamblers. They are either unemployed or too lazy to work, so they stay around physical casinos all day long. They spend most of their time begging from people who have won bets.

Some of them could pester you to the extent that you could be annoyed. In the case of the OP, one party went too far. You can always politely tell them you don't have money to give to them. Since there are different physical casinos, one can easily move to another one if there are confrontations. Shooting someone because of a cigarette is stupid.

This is crazy tbh , at first the win is small to begins with and not to mentioned the continue pestering . The guy pestering the gambler went too far with same with gambler involving gun in such situation,  you getting anything from the gambler is base on the gambler choice the moment he disagrees to give you from his wins , best thing to do is to stop pestering him .  I believe that gamblers as gave the pester same reply for while before it escalated like this , fighting for what you don’t have is just totally wrong , the only wrong thing the gambler did was involving gun .

The nominal winnings are also very small as if they are not commensurate with the risks faced that gambler, I know maybe he is very annoyed because he is constantly disturbed, we are also very annoyed when we meet people like that, but wouldn't it be better if we leave and don't respond to him rather than having to resort to violence which will self harm ourselves, but I suspect he shot someone as if he had planned the murder because he had prepared a gun for use at any time, we don't know the story behind it, it could also be that he holds a grudge against the man who was shot because maybe that's not the only problem between them.

Just curious, is anyone else pissed off at the guy begging for some of the gambler's winnings despite what happened to him? I mean, I know the amount is extremely small, and he got shot, but to pester the gambler since the time he won and gets angry and steal a cigarette from the gambler if the gambler refuses to give him some of his winnings is just ridiculous.

The thing about the guy begging for some money is that he was now desperate about getting something from the gambler's winning. He felt very entitled and that got over him to pester the gambler.

However, if you look deeper to get the real facts of the matter, it could be that the guy has also shared part of his winning with the gambler or someone else within their confine of friends because usually gamblers share some part of their winning with people around the game house if they come to cash out their winning (that is offline gambling). So, this could also be the situation here which made him entitled. So I'm not really surprised or curious on that but just that the guy would have stopped when the gambler wasn't yielding to his request. But, the gambler went too far to shoot someone because of such a little amount. He might have mistakenly shut him in a more dangerous place that can take the guy's life.

Matters like this get settled among gamblers in the neighborhood and not by shooting a fellow man.

This is a crazy story over such a small amount won from gambling. Who could do such thing over $8? The other guy who asked the gambler for a share is very greedy, because tell me how could someone ask for a cut from only $8? He shouldn’t have shot him after he was pissed off, he should’ve just avoided him because that amount is too small. I think he lose everything, he didn’t get his cut and he also got shot and injured.

Moreover, I think some of us who are into gambling have at least one friend who behave like that. Even though they don’t take it serious, they will still ask you to give them a share after you win from gambling. I have never asked any of my friends to give me a share from their winning ticket before, because when it’s my turn to win, I won’t give anybody a share as well.

The matter is ridiculous and a simple incident where a gambler won 8 dollars for just 500 pesos US dollars and from there a neighbor was constantly pressuring him for some money and by bothering him, he was completely stimulating the neurons of the brain. The matter will be exactly the same for everyone as the neighbor did to the gambler in the mentioned incident. If a person is constantly bothered in a street shop or a shopping mall or even at home, the person may be mentally hurt or may not be able to control his anger. I will blame the neighbor more in this case because why would a neighbor treat his neighbor like this for just one dollar? One dollar is not a big amount but why would he repeatedly ask for this money from the gambler. In my case, I would have taught the neighbor the right lesson first. However, in the case of the gambler, the matter has gone too far and the gambler should have explained to him very well and also explained that one dollar is not a big amount and why is he bothering him like this for this one dollar. Therefore, it was not right to take out a revolver and shoot him. If the bullet had not hit his hand but had hit vital organs elsewhere in the body, the neighbor would probably have died by now.

I don't call that needing a favor. If someone needs a favor, they should know their boundaries and respect the decision of the next person, but in this case, the guy was so impulsive and asked as if it was his right to get a fair share of the winnings, which is not so, you call that amount demanding small amount, but it's really not compared to how much was actually won, the total money won was just about $8 according to the article and the guy was demanding for $0.8 which is roughly 10% of the total winning, is he asking for Tithe, or he's tax authority collecting tax money, the means used was aggressive if it was just a pre-vocational fight without firearms being involved I could have not seen anything wrong done by the suspect.
Well, the suspect could say he did that for self defence and only God knows how the suspect has been attacked by the victim before the resorted to self defence by shooting the victim. Such approach is very rude of him to use in seeking for favour and from the looks, it seems the victim might happen to be a street gang who go about terrorising people just to extort from them maybe the more reason the gambler decided to equip himself to avoid further harassment. The victim exhibited the lifestyle of street gangs and I know it will be nothing short of it anyways he deserves what he got and has learnt a lesson he would never be in a haste to forget.

Sometimes approach matters. You need a favour from somebody you don't just become aggressive towards the person, you have to be polite with the person rather than being too troublesome. The gambler could have given him the money as it is nothing compared to what he had won but the way and manner at which the begger harassed is what I think got him provoked to have shot him.

Is it even necessary to ask someone for money when they win? some people are so jobless that they always look forward to get favored by those who are winning in gambling. They don't even care to know how much losses the gambler has incurred before hitting that one win. What is annoying me in this story is that the winning amount is not even huge for him to be pestering the gambler for a little cut from it. The gambler went too far by shooting him but it is very bad for some set of people to stay in casino or gambling centers just to look out for people who are winning so that they can beg them for money.

This is a very sad story, but I believe something else must have triggered the suspect more, that made him shoot him other than just asking for his winnings or taking his cigarettes without permission.
On the victims angle, he his very wrong for always asking the suspect to share his winnings with him, because he is not entitled to his money at all and I have also heard of stories like this when people who go to physical shops to gamble are been bullied or abused when they win just to share their winnings, which is wrong.
I think it is better and safer to gamble online, because you have your own privacy, nobody knows when you win or lose and nobody is entitled to your win, or you been forced to share any money.

Whatever happens between two people in a gambling game, shooting someone for it is a serious crime under the law. Gambling is not a game of entertainment but a quick way to make money or get rich. It can be nothing more than madness. We must be aware, control our emotions and greed, and take our time. We cannot make hasty decisions, which will lead to big losses.

I mean, I know the amount is extremely small, and he got shot, but to pester the gambler since the time he won and gets angry and steal a cigarette from the gambler if the gambler refuses to give him some of his winnings is just ridiculous.
It is possible that there is a background story to this that the gambler who is being pestered by the other individual has also been in a position where they did the pestering and then the individual who is pestering them currently succumbed by maybe giving them or sharing whatever they had so it is now like he is expecting the same from the gambler who has now won but since the gambler has refused to reciprocate, it has resulted in a fight. I blame the gambler and not the person begging because there are other ways to resolve the situation not by shooting the person.
Maybe that could also be the case. These two could be friends before and could be sharing some betting favors that's why the other guy is very confident to pester the gambler, believing that he won't get easily annoyed because they are friends.

However, though it looked like the gambler has been harassed already, still I won't agree with the gambler to just shoot the other guy so that he will stop from pestering. In the end, now he's facing a criminal record and now he's inside the jail, when he could have managed it the other way around if he is just being logical.

For the gambler to have moved with gun then it means he has be so much haunted by the begger and maybe that begger might not be what we here think he is because from how OP explained the situation, it sounds like a gang member stuff who keeps attacking and picking up on people whom.he perceived or have witnessed them win huge amount of money.

I could remember back then when it was street things, whenever any gang notices you to have won from a pool, you automatically get their presence because they would want you to be paying dues to them of you refuse joining their gang. That is how things were so bad them that one cannot move about so freel if you stay around such environment. Maybe that was what OP was facing which triggered him to use a gun on the begger.

In my own opinion, the gambler wouldn’t have shot the person pestering him to share part of he’s winnings. Most persons are wild and can go any extreme just to get rid of whoever or whatsoever is bothering or pestering them,so at that point he felt shooting the person would make the person stay away from him for a lifetime, probably there’s something missing in the story or are they hiding it from the public?because how on earth would a person keep disturbing someone who has refused to share their winnings.Giving it’s a thing of choice and not by force,or was he’s money involved in the gambler’s wins ,what else would I say because it’s only when you’re money is involved that’s when you have the right to disturb the gamblers who has refused from giving you your own percentage.

I wouldn't have believed the story if it wasn't a news. Holy mother earth! Why do such people exist, why do they covet somebody else's possessions? Somebody teach 'em manners? Well... apparently the guy tried to. I mean, I would support the guy, hopefully he doesn't face significant consequences for saving himself from harassment. Think he should have went to the police though, instead of taking matters into his own hands.

...

I am in utter dismay at your response. You don't feed leeches like that, they will only continue to increase their demands. Cutting 'em off mercilessly is the only way.

...

Same disbelief at your response too. 'Friend' should learn to accept, 'No' for an answer and leave the man alone.

First observation, do people carry guns around for protection or he was some kind of military or security? This is a really serious situation over an irrelevant issue that could amount to nothing or less. Did shooting the man pestering him for a cut solve the issue? Or was that the best solution?

Secondly, the nature of their relationship should be what makes the other person ask for a cut without anything in mind. It is not a big deal and something that could have being resolved without violence but the issue is that the request was handled with pressure rather than patience and calmness making it feel like entitlement.

The story is quite alarming to say and I first wonder why someone would feel free to carry a loaded weapon unless in that region, the security operatives don't do their job well or it is more of a syndicate or frat dominated area where the street is hard cold and bloody and vengeful to even the slightest provocation.

I would blame the gambler who won for not sensing the danger and hostility from the one asking a commission at the onset, and be ready to counter and quel any violence that may result. He would have easily avoided this scenario by just giving out the money and think of a better way to avoid a repeat of the scenario or think of a comeback for the other guy.
Now he gets to spend more than his gambling wins to treat himself amidst the pain and discomfort he must be having right now, while the other may try to evade the crime and the law from catching up with him over such a crime because of a meager amount.

We should be careful who we call friends and hangout with and share our secrets with and more importantly learn to avoid situations that may lead to violence mostly when money is involved.

The news will not tell us what must have been the reason why the other guy keep pestering the gambling asking for a percentage of every wins he gets. Maybe he must have been the person that have been giving the gambler games to bet on so that when he wins, he would have to pay a percentage of his total winnings. Agreement need to be respected and we don't know what must have prompted the hitted argument to reach a state where the other guy will have to shot the gambler.

The rate at which some gamblers feel entitled to your wins can be very annoying. I interpret the conduct of the wounded gambler on the streets as bully since he is always taking his belongings forcefully and without permission simply because he refused to share the winning. There might be other little details that led to the fight, but the pestering someone and forcing them to share their wins is unnecessarily and very disturbing.

He contributed very well to his injury, but the other guy went too extreme by shooting him, even though he acted on anger and impulse, still he went too far with his reaction.

This is the main reason I stopped gambling in physical sportsbook, in my region if you win a substantial amount and you don't do a little giveaway, street boys can even go to the extent of laying ambush and robbing you of your wins on your way home. I prefer gambling privately and nobody knows if I win or loose.
It seems you did not read the OP well, it was not the gambler that was brutalized, it was the gamblers friend that got shot over his disturbance that his gambling friend should share his win with him.
So it is neither not bully of your insight as I can observe instead, I would say the reaction of the gambler was so barbarically brutal which attempt could have taken his friends life.

So he actually went too far in pulling out the firearms against his friend.
Indeed there could be more  behind this because the cause of the incident does not worth the level of the action except there is something the media is not telling us about the event.

So who is the victim here and who is the suspect? As far as I can tell, the guy who is regarded as the suspect in this story is actually the victim; he was attacked by an entitled man who claims to be entitled to what he won, and he felt threatened and only used the firearm to defend himself. It's a crazy story; at least he did not aim for a killing point, or else the assaulter could not have been alive to regret his action.
