PSU coil whine under continuous load : the Silent killer or it's harmless?

For my home Farm !

Some power supplies started a slight coil whine under 24/7 load, but multimeter voltages are rock solid. Do you replace them immediately as a precaution, or just ignore it?

I think it should be harmless. Most devices make noise when under load, especially transformers. If a phone charger makes a noise, a PSU making one isn't too abnormal.

If the multimeter and miner are running with correct values then there's probably nothing to be concerned about.

Maybe it s due to another device that interfers with the signal   ..... probably ! In fact the charger were silient before i moved the setup near some other devices ....


I will update once i back home !

Update : After checking signals that may interfer with my setup maybe some additional cleaning will do more improvement!

I've encountered this problem, but it usually doesn't interfere with the equipment's operation.
You're doing the right thing by looking at the instrument readings and not the noise. Noise doesn't reduce the lifespan of components, but it can be a nuisance if you're frequently near the equipment.

what watts can the psu do?
how many watts are you pulling on the psu?

does the psu plug into 220/240 volt or 110/120 volt?

whine can mean a lot of different things.

most are harmless but not all.

PSUs are 1200W Gold, ~2yo running on 220V grid. Load is ~900W constant (around 75% load capacity). Standard ripple/voltages look fine on multimeter, so hopefully just harmless inductor vibration under load.

Thanks for confirming. The rig room is separate so noise isn't an issue. Voltages are totally flat on the meter, so I’ll just monitor thermals and let them run.

If they don't make a noise when you move them away then it's likely they have some level of interference with each other and that's probably safe. It could be something as simple as the cables being the same length and carrying the same power and frequency.

Could be a sign of aging.

Or not.

I have had corsair run for 5 years at 80% and zero issues other then a coil whine for the last 4 years it ran .

A 1200W Gold power supply shouldn't fail in two years unless it's a known defect.
If your multimeter has an oscilloscope function, you can monitor the pulsations, but I've always used the cheapest $5 multimeter. If the power supply starts producing incorrect voltages, you'll notice it in your equipment.
