Gold isn't the safest safe haven that people always thought, there were times when it goes up so high and dumping so hard.
This time around it won't be different.

If gold isn't the safest haven, then what is? Bitcoin? LOL.

A safe haven asset doesn't have to hold its value at all time or never decline during periods of uncertainty or crisis. Because, ultimately, it's still an asset traded on the financial market. Its price is influenced by market sentiment, capital flow, speculation and even manipulation. At time, it may behave differently from what we have been taught to expect.

Financial market don't follow any fixed pattern, and at time they can become incredibly irrational. We shouldn't rush to conclude that gold has lost its essence or is no longer a reliable safe haven simply because it has behaved contrary to our expectation.

The Central Bankof Russia sold approximately 44 metric tons of gold (about 43.5 metric tons) from its reserves during the first six months of 2026, raising about $5.6 billion. This marks the largest sale of gold in the past 25 years.

As we know, the Russian economy is stable, faces no problems, and is outpacing the EU in terms of growth, while Russia’s oil and gas revenues are breaking all records!  This analysis can be found in official Russian sources and in statements by Russian President Putin.

I’m interested in the opinion of this esteemed community-is this an indicator that the gold market is poised for a decline? After all, there are no other logical explanations for why a stable and growing economy would “dump” such large volumes of gold without being certain that gold prices won’t fall in the near future!
What do you think?

I think 44 tons for Russia with their around 2,300 +/- tons gold reserve is only a drop in the bucket and its not reserve depletion but only shifting money from one pocket to another and Russia not lost their gold strategic function. On war mode situation, Russia has limited financial policy option for its fiscal and liquidity needed. Beside selling gold reserve, Rusia can choose, printing more rubbel with possibility of uncontrolled inflation. Taking domestic debt with issue bonds with consequence, increase interest rate and increase future interest expenses. Russia can take option of selling its foreign exchange reserves due to Ukraine invasion freezing. Selling country asset also almost impossible because take long process, value decrease when there are economic shock and government control inevitable. The last choice is increasing tax but i think not wise in war mode because it can lowered economic growth when industry is facing pressure, with low public consumption and investment needs to be maintained.

Selling goold is the best choice i think from Putin perspective because sells when the price of gold is much higher than when they were accumulated are relatively profitable. Russia get fast liquidity with low impact on inflation. I think Putin acted consistently, he see gold as tools to defend country sovereignty.

Beside that one of my thinking, maybe Russia do an asset rotation by selling some of their gold reserves(which we actually don't know who the real ultimate beneficial buyer) for buying other asset such as yuan, domestic bond, making defense and security investment or for energy project which i think will add significant deterrence for Russia

I'm not saying gold lost its essence, not being safest safe haven isn't equal to not safe, I'm just explaining that commodity or an asset is all the same, there is demand and supply that will make the price and there is always risk of dumping when price getting irrational which caused by several factors you mentioned. In financial context the word safehaven is an asset that maintain its value during economic downturn, in short-term Swiss Franc (CHF) wins in that regard but Gold is still good for long term though as it happens, the chart looking not so different with bitcoin.

Russia selling this huge quantity of gold does not necessarily mean that the gold market is ready to decline, but it could be a sale to make profits or to provide liquidity for the general budget and to confront the budget deficit, the very high costs of the Ukrainian war and Western sanctions, and not a complete abandonment of the precious metal.

Don't forget that the sale was made internally, i.e., to local Russian banks. This makes the impact, if it occurs, limited to Russia only and does not extend to become a global impact on gold.

Russia has 200 times more gold now then post Soviet era when they went broke in 98 and defaulted on the debt.  Relative to that they are doing great.   The then Rouble exchange rate from old to new was 10,000 to 1.   They arent at that point but they are suffering a pullback in their reserves surely.

China would like all their oil exports if that were possible but I dont think they have either a great excess or ability to produce and pay for the export of oil to China, the infrastructure is far more on the west side then east side of the country perhaps for terrain reasons but also legacy.  For decades Russia has needed investment and development, technology to maximize their resources instead they went the easier route of intimadation war and are now currently reaping the benefits of such policies.
