The Central Bankof Russia sold approximately 44 metric tons of gold (about 43.5 metric tons) from its reserves during the first six months of 2026, raising about $5.6 billion. This marks the largest sale of gold in the past 25 years.

As we know, the Russian economy is stable, faces no problems, and is outpacing the EU in terms of growth, while Russia’s oil and gas revenues are breaking all records!  This analysis can be found in official Russian sources and in statements by Russian President Putin.

I’m interested in the opinion of this esteemed community-is this an indicator that the gold market is poised for a decline? After all, there are no other logical explanations for why a stable and growing economy would “dump” such large volumes of gold without being certain that gold prices won’t fall in the near future!
What do you think?

Gold price increased to over $5500 significantly like it has not happened since a very long time ago, there must be retracement and also there must be a stage of consolidation. Gold is a store of value, just as you will DCA if it is bitcoin, DCA is also good for gold because those that buy gold will not sell in losses but sell in profit after some years from now.

I don’t think we can conclude that Russia expects gold prices to fall simply because it sold part of its reserves. Gold has historically been one of the more stable reserve assets, and central banks buy and sell it for many reasons beyond trying to time the market.
The Russia-Ukraine war continues and Russia is heavily sanctioned by the international community. All those factors could impact upon the central bank's reserve management policy. All these things could be done in order to boost liquidity, or to rebalance the reserves or to fund government obligations, but it is not necessarily a sign of gold going down.

It's also important to keep in mind that central banks don't necessarily act based on temporary price perceptions. They tend to act according to general economic policies, monetary policies, reserve policies, and geopolitical factors.

This is a great topic but hope you know government sell reserves for many reasons. Reasons like, liquidity needs, reserve balancing, budget financing, currency management and geopolitical considerations.

Selling doesn’t necessarily means they expect lower prices. It’s not always about maximizing profits for central banks.

I think we need to understand that some of the these assets are actually bought for a reason which is to be sold one day either to actually take care of certain things or not, the January 2026 that you talked about was the period gold hit its new and current all time high of around $5,600. Will it be logical that Russia decides to take profit? Yes Putin might’ve talked about the economy been stable but mate we all know Russia are in war which actually intensifies time to time, could be that it was to Carter for other things.

That aside Gold has both the bearish and the bullish market trend and economically this two phases will definitely come up after one trend goes, gold was in bullish trend in the late last year and also the start of this year so even without Russia selling it was logical that bearish trend is incoming

So, can we say that it was a foolish move to sell an asset that was rising in value? I don’t think even one of the most effective governments of our time would make such an ill-considered move! It’s logical to assume that they know something and are selling this asset while the hype is still high, since its value will decline from here on out. Are there any other possibilities?
