A fat bank balance looks good, but if it is just sitting there, it is slowly losing value. Inflation eats it up quietly. Bills eat it. Even boredom eats it. The real wealth grows when you put that money to work. Like someone who buys land in a developing area and waits a few years. That same land could double or triple in value. Most people are investors whether they realize it or not, because when you get to a certain age in life you'll end up adding money to a private pension of one form or another. In America I think these are called 401k's and Europe has equivalents where sometimes the company will make contributions too. That money sits somewhere with a money manager and depending on the level of risk selected, you might be 80% or even higher invested into company shares. The rest would be in lower risk bonds which are meant to do better during turbulent times. As you get older money gets taken out of shares and your portfolio is more weighted towards bonds, so when you retire you have a relatively low risk income.
