One of the most successful entrepreneurs in agriculture may never plant a single seed. Whenever people talk about making money from agriculture, the first advice is usually; "acquire a land and start farming." But farming is only one part of a much larger agricultural economy.

Before food moves from the farm to your table, it must be harvested, collected, sorted, preserved, transported, processed, packaged, finance and distributed. And at every stage of that journey, there is a problem waiting for someone to solve profitably.
The farmer produces the crops. Who prevents the produce from spoiling? Who transports it to other areas? Who processes it into a higher value product? Who supplies the machinery? Who connects the farmer to reliable buyers?

This is where many of the biggest agricultural opportunities are hiding. A farmer may work for months to produce perishable commodities, but without proper storage and access to buyers, a large portion of that value can disappear within days, obviously the bigger problem is in preservation, processing and distribution.

Without owning hectares of farmland, one can lucratively participate through; commodity aggregation, solar powered cold chain activities, packaging and labelling, produce sorting and grading, irrigation services, farm to market logistics and even a digital platform connecting farmers to buyers. Just to mention a few. All these may already exist, but it just points towards an untapped tapestry.

Surely the lucrative section of agriculture may not be tied to the farm land itself, the potential of the sector is enormous, in both developed and developing economies.

Every step in the transportation and processing of farm products are potentially profitable in some cases, you just have to figure out which works with your skills better. And that doesn’t mean there are not some farmers that also make a lot of profits from their farms.

That one of the most exciting things about agricultural businesses, even delivering the finished products is also very profitable and a lot more of them as you’ve already mentioned some.

I think the ultimate money glitch is closing the gap between buyers and sellers. But not everyone can go into this sector. If not, what happens to the actual production. At the end, the value chain depends on the other. And all part you one chooses have a different kind of risk. Never the same. What I think is even more better if only one part of the Chain is studied and understood well to stand firm in the agricultural sector

Surely the lucrative section of agriculture may not be tied to the farm land itself, the potential of the sector is enormous, in both developed and developing economies.

This is very correct but the most people that are interested in Agriculture are only exposed to the farming part, making sure that they’re able to cultivate a land and plant, then wait for harvesting to move their products to where it’ll be processed. The lucrativeness in the chain process involved in Agriculture cannot be overstated.

Most of this people that serves as intermediaries between the farmers and the final consumers go directly to this farmers to buy their products as they’re harvesting without allowing the farmers to make it reach the market themselves. They know how much they make through buying and selling again in the market and cutting out the stress from the farmer in selling their products.

In many big ventures like this, those that serve as intermediaries makes the most money. Connecting buyers and sellers is a very big business that we don’t get to talk about more often as it should be encouraged but being truthful is always the key.

Well this is the basics of capitalism, supply chain economics and economies of scale. It's hardly a new insight and you'll find a similar story in the "Wealth of Nations" book written a hundred & fifty years ago by a pioneer in this area. It's why people talk about finding a niche and maximizing it, because there are so many points along the supply chain which can be divided up and if you're able to excel in one via different means (quality, price, ingenuity, etc.) then you can profit. Nothing is hiding and farmers are always looking to economize at every step of the way, because they are the ones who ultimately have to profit when the whole process works together and at the right price.

I agree with you on this point because I’ve seen it myself, the marketers who go to the farmers and get farm products and bring them to the cities or even export them to other countries often make a lot more money than the farmers at last.
These are either the middlemen who has got the logistics to transport the farm products to the cities and other places where they can bring it.

So they bring the farm products to the cities with a profit margin they have and at the same time, helps the farmers to reduce the cost of the transport and other concerns that should slash it from their minds.

It's lucrative although there are also pros and cons into it if it's done wrongly or some unforeseen events have happened.

Countries who's got a good concern for their farmers will have their back and support them to lessen the margin of these middlemen and it goes straight directly to the consumers. I

As someone from a farming family, I can say that the people who make the biggest profit are usually not the farmers. It's the middlemen or those who buy produce directly from the farmers.

Before, most of the buyers were only from our municipality or nearby towns, so the prices they offered were quite low. But now, buyers from other provinces also come to buy our produce. Because of that, they've driven prices up, and the local buyers have had no choice but to increase their offers as well.

I'd say buyers from other provinces have helped improve the prices, even if it's only by a little. A little help is still help. But yeah, in the end, the middlemen and other capitalists are still the ones who make the most profit.

Rice farmers strive to put in efforts everyday on the farm, yet the sharp moneylords are the ones who reap the greatest benefits. The influx of other city buyers can raise slightly the selling price of unhusked rice, but by far the majority of capital is in the hands of the market leaders that controls all agricultural trade in this dear country.

In other country agriculture is one of the biggest earnings because they are the one who harvest all of the foods we have in our table but these are only into a good countries, right now here in my country in the Philippines, these farmers are one of the poor, the large business sectors are buying their lands and use a iron hand just only to get their properties and ending is the government does not support the farmers at all instead they make them poorer, they import goods from other countries and let their community suffer even though the price is more cheaper into our local. Imagine monthly once they harvest its over supply sometimes hoard just to tell with the government its lacking of supply and they import more because of the cut of the officials. I feel sorry for them.

It is true that many people automatically associate agriculture with owning a farmland but the real value is often created after the crops leave the farm. In many developing countries, farmers work the hardest yet earn the smallest because they sell raw produce while others handle storage, processing, branding and also distribution.

Although I don’t think anyone should avoid farming and focus only on the value chain because without production, there is definitely nothing to process or distribute. The opportunity lies by identifying which part of the the chain matches your skill, available capital and local market condition.

I also think technology will surely continue to shift to where profits are made.

It's kinda pretty much known that the farm is getting small slice of the bread, every money you pay goes to distribution. There is reason farmers aren't getting rich and only earning enough to keep them survive the next harvesting season.
Every documentary always points to the distribution taking up huge chunk of the fee. Money is always on financing and distribution side.

Sure. That you're the farmer does not mean you're in the highest form of profitability in the chain that money moves from planting to the final consumption area. Those that generate the highest revenue are those that are capable of creating a large market out of the agricultural niche. A farmer that understand the business in agriculture can still plant and get himself involved in other aspect of agriculture that is capable of producing much higher level of profitability. All he needs to do is to heir the right labour, leverage the right technology, take advantage of systems and get involved in sells. The real money in agriculture lies in making sells to the right source.

It has long been known that the agricultural producer receives the least profit. And the ultimate link, the retailer, gets the most profit in the entire supply chain. Therefore, in all countries, agricultural producers cannot exist without loans and government support. This was done intentionally. Purchase prices are deliberately lowered so that the bulk of the profit goes to wholesalers, resellers, and retailers.

But besides that, there is also the aspect that whoever dominates the sales market dictates the rules. Therefore, the retail chain always dictates the rules to the producer of food (especially perishable food). Or, as an example, a marketplace sets rules for small sellers on its online marketplace. It would seem a paradox? After all, a retailer cannot exist without a manufacturer, and a marketplace cannot exist without sellers. But in fact, there is no paradox - after all, the goal of all of them is to profit from sales, and the one who controls the sales market is the master of the situation.

In the past labor and capital were the main resources in agricultural land but now weather forecasting, soil health analysis, and even production planning according to demand can create major economic benefits. So if you can work by calculating what to cultivate on the land at the right time and where to sell it for a good price and how to reduce waste then it is possible to make good profits from it.

To me, the biggest potential of agriculture is to connect the different stages together such as production, technology, information, and market. If these four work together in an integrated manner then farmers will benefit greatly and entrepreneurs will be able to build sustainable businesses. Ultimately, the person who creates the most value in the long run is the one who can make the whole system more efficient.

There are many business opportunities other than farming but farming is the basic foundation of the entire agricultural value chain. Processing packaging storage transportation all of these businesses cannot exist without even if the farmers do not produces crops, the profitability is dependent on the country and the crop and the type and the scale of the business there are larger commercial farms that are generating very large amount of profit through their efficient production while there are processing businesses who are struggling with high operating cost.

There are people who are good and better suited to farming while there are other people who are more good in technology, marketing or distribution so we cannot say that the real money is not on the farm people who are exporting farm products are generating a lot of profit at a great margin.

One of the most successful entrepreneurs in agriculture may never plant a single seed. Whenever people talk about making money from agriculture, the first advice is usually; "acquire a land and start farming." But farming is only one part of a much larger agricultural economy.
Let's not forget about the seed producers. Big multinational seed companies like Corteva Agriscience and Bayer CropScience are focusing on producing genetically modified seeds. These seeds end up causing shifts in microbial balance and soil chemistry, making it challenging for natural seeds to do well. Farmers would now have to depend solely on these companies instead of preserving natural seedlings.

No doubt these GMOs have contributed to an increase in farm productivity. But relying on a few institutions for seed supply promotes monopoly and increases the profits of these seed producers.

Seeing this occur over and over again, year in, year out, I don't get why some governments to try as much as possible to create incentives for this people to carry out there operations, with how steep distribution and maintenance is, I don't see the encouragement for middle class and below people to invest in farming.

At this point in time if I want to enter into farming, it won't be actually harvesting of crops, I would have to be in distribution or production because that is where all the profits reside.

With all the profit situated outside the actual farming  what are the incentives for farmers to continue?

When it comes to agriculture, it is one of the biggest sectors in the world that brings in good revenue, and like you said, one good thing is that people who are making money from agriculture might not even be the farmers because there are people who process products from agriculture, and I think the fewest people who make money from agriculture are not even the farmers.

Even though it carries some risk, one of the most dependable investments is still something that people cannot live without. One thing I've noticed is that supply cannot match demand, so people must also get involved in agriculture. You don't have to want to be a farmer, but you can do what you believe will benefit you in that industry because it's so large. And there are countries where one of the things that boost there economy is agriculture, so you see how important it is to the people and to the country.

This is where many of the biggest agricultural opportunities are hiding. A farmer may work for months to produce perishable commodities, but without proper storage and access to buyers, a large portion of that value can disappear within days, obviously the bigger problem is in preservation, processing and distribution.

In production, there is what they call channel of distribution, I learnt this in my high school days and it illustrates or describes the process the the production of a commodity or goods take before getting to the final consumer.

If we are to look at agriculture, you don’t necessarily need to be a farmer to take a page in these channels but, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are an agriculturalist. You can be in other fields and actually partake of benefit from agriculture. In the end, we all need food and products from agriculture to produce other things.

Fisheries is a form of agriculture but, those who own the cold storage aren’t into agriculture, they are into logistics business. That’s a distinct field on its own, it includes transportation as well and they all serve in this very channel of getting goods down to the consumer while making it available all year round.

Agriculture is so wide that it has so many chains and we should understand all this channels in agriculture and how applicable they are in solving our daily economical challenge when it comes to food supplying, for sure everyone will not be on the farm to plant, summer in the office making the architectural work of what should be carried out on the field, some work on the supplies of the machines and tools needed when some get the material supply as well, this is why we have to focus more on different areas as part of the scope in agricultural practice.
