Has anyone here ever sent Bitcoin to the wrong address or received it by mistake

I was watching a video about public keys, private keys, and Bitcoin addresses, and it made me wonder how often this actually happens. Since Bitcoin transactions usually can’t be reversed, we should always double-check the address before sending Bitcoin.

Has anyone here ever accidentally sent Bitcoin to the wrong address? Or has anyone ever received Bitcoin from an unknown address and suspected that someone had sent it by mistake?

I guess this happens quite often with banks, people sometimes send large amounts of money to the wrong account by accident. I’m just wondering how common it is with Bitcoin and whether anyone here has experienced it.

Definitely not as common. Because bitcoin addresses have a certain format. Just because a text start with bc1 or 1 or 3 and has a specific length does not automatically make it a valid bitcoin address, which means the wallet or exchange wouldn't be able to process it.

There are many instances where this has happened and even malware that can alter addresses in your clipboard (is when you press copy and paste) or by altering QR codes that get displayed.

It's unwise to try to transcribe it unless you're confident in what your doing as one mistake may cost quite a bit. Banks have checks in place to make things easier to reverse too. Most of crypto doesn't have that mechanism.

When I make a transaction, I make it a habit to double or triple check it before signing it on my offline device to avoid sending it to the wrong address.

Someone has mistakenly send bitcoin to my address before, bit the person was my friend and he has sent bitcoin to the same address before which caused it to happen.

My brother has also mistakenly sent bitcoin to my address before bit it was not bitcoin but USDT on Ton Network. He requested for the address the day he mistakenly sent another coins to the same address the second time.

This is how some bitcoin lose their coins if they mistakenly sent it to an an known person.

Maybe when Bitcoin was still using the P2PK script, the mistake could be common that people send and receive Bitcoin to the wrong public keys since there is no error checking in public keys, but wallet addresses are different. There is a checksum for every wallet address that, if you make a mistake in the characters, the wallet will detect the error for you to check again.

I can't say if other people have experienced the same, I have not sent Bitcoin to a wrong address before. Some people who have experienced malware attacks and keyboard hijack are the common possible scenario where addresses are changed through copy and paste, it is rare, and the chances are low but it's possible.

Banks used account numbers as identifier and not wallet address and I think most banks have identification of recipients before a transaction is sent. The common style here is that you will have to select on your bank app if you are sending interbank or to another bank, and both make you verify the receiver through the name. You can quickly resolve transactions with interbank; other banks are hard, all depends on the end user and the bank they used.

The chances of receiving Bitcoin from an unknown sender is very slim, except it's coming from a familiar source that has sent to the particular address in the past.

Mistakes only happen when you are not careful, careful enough not to mix up wallet addresses or detect early malware attacks, the chances of sending Bitcoin to a wallet address because of wrong or incomplete digits is very low.

Well you can received something by mistake thru Dust Attack, what it is, why it is dangerous and how to prevent falling to it. But this method is being used by scammers, so be careful with it.

But accidentally sending it to someone just because you mistaken a letter or a character? Unless you are infected by a malware.

I have not experienced such a situation before, but I acknowledge that it happens. One major way people end up sending their bitcoins to the wrong addresses is through copy-and-paste errors. A person may accidentally copy the wrong address, or their already copied address may be replaced by malware, which could result in them sending bitcoins to the wrong address.

When it concerns Bitcoin, people must not choose the easy way out. Take time to double-check the beneficiary's address and the amount of bitcoin to be sent.

It is easier with banks because you can actually walk into the bank and lodge a complaint. There is a chance that your funds could be reversed to you, even if such a reversal may not happen immediately.

To be honest I have never received any amount of Bitcoin from any unknown address and also I have never sent Bitcoin by mistake to any unknown address. But of course I have sent some altcoin to other addresses by mistake many times, although it was not so much of a problem because of how the smaller amount was. Still when I try to send big amount I always double verify the address before clicking confirm button.

The thing we need to understand here is that even the dust attack was actually not a mistake rather it was a deliberate thing so that you can actually get infected by the attack this is where mistake of sending to another address by copying the wrong address but valid address and sending bitcoin to them. So for bitcoin addresses there is highly unlikely cases that it’s a mistake without any root. [/quote]

This missing of character is exactly what I was referring to in the other comment, we need to understand that once there is a character change or missing then the address will definitely have a wrong checksum and this means it’s an invalid address and even most wallet wouldn’t allow you to proceed because they can check for address validity first.

 The issue of malware is actually not considered a mistake to me rather an attack and this is the reason why I still refer to the bitcoin sent wrongly as an attack rather than a mere mistake. In the past it could have happened because there wasn’t addresses but i definitely doubt now

I mean personally I believed luckily it doesn't really happened to me actually, probably because I was very concious and aware about it, I was afraid of making that mistakes to the point where I really triple check everything before even clicking the sent button, Ofcourse not to the point of checking every letters but checking probably the first 5 and last 5 strings on the address just to make sure, I have some cases where I pasted the wrong address but I was able to correct it because I double check everything. Maybe this is just a matter of how you handle things; it wouldn't happen to anyone if they are aware of it every time and they are mostly avoiding it, I mean if you lose focus and forget about it and just send it without double-checking, that is usually where you might make some mistakes in the wrong run especially if you do a lot of transactions.

Never received any amount in my address accidentally I guess the chances of that was just too low or by accident, maybe if you have a lot of transactions or your wallet is used in a lot of transactions some might wrong send it if you have a lot of influence and your address is public.

yahoo62278 sent bitcoin back to Baryom and you know it is 39.005 BTC.

It's on 2018-11-03 according to a trust feedback from Baryom.

I sent him 39.4 BTC instead of 0.394 BTC for a signature campaign payment. (My mistake obviously) He returned me 39.005 BTC as soon as he saw that :

Someone sent 1 BTC to an address of this charity but I did not know it was sent intentionally or by a mistake.
It's on May 2020.

Morally right thing to do is return what is not yours to where it is.
