The first leg took me by surprise,  I was so surprised that Benfica could lose to St Gallen. I predicted that game to end with Benfica winning with at least 3 goals. It's good that, they played this second leg with alot of seriousness. They didn't even give St Gallen breathing space today, it was total domination from Benfica. Benfica are one of the strongest team in this year Europa league and I expect them to have a good run.

Regarding Pavlidis and the talk about him looking for a bigger club, I feel the blame should be on his agent, who is unable to find good team for him, or it might also be from his own personal decision not to move to a big club. Because he has good goal scoring record at Benfica, and most big teams are looking for  reliable and consistent strikers. That guy has been really underrated and he also need a good Pr team to promote his name properly.

I have always liked watching Midtjylland play as they are strong team. The match between these two clubs have started and the first half is just about done with no score the last I checked about ten minutes ago.
Having belief in Midtjylland's abilities to score I put in a few coins on them to put in atleast 3 goals but from the looks of it, those will all have to come in the second half.

This might be the worst advice I've ever seen. Did you really think Midtjylland would score 3 goals? They didn't even score a single goal in 2 matches. Beşiktaş crushed them in the knockout round. Midtjylland might be a good team, but they were up against a team that was better than them. When you're betting, it's a good idea to follow both teams, otherwise you'll keep losing money like this.
Beşiktaş secured a very important victory. They made it through a tough round, the rest of the way should be easier.

Other favorites like Maccabi Tel Aviv, Anderlecht, Benfica, PAOK and CSKA Sofia also managed to advance. This year's Europa League is going to be very tough. There are a lot of strong teams.

I agree with you, based on quality St Gallen is not a suitable opponent for Benfica I mean they are on a different level so we are not surprised that St Gallen conceded 5 goals. The red card incident also worsened the situation and Benfica can take advantage of it, you know Benfica should have scored more goals because based on statistics 25 shots and 10 shoots on target that was enough to prove how Benfica dominated the match. By the way I just realized that Benfica is playing in Europa League, they should be playing in Champions League, yeah we know they are one of the teams that makes a surprise.

Mate, Vangelis Pavlidis was nowhere during the first leg, and he's just playing better at the 2nd leg. So how can you think the better for him to go to the top league if his performance is still up and down? He's also scoring a lot against a club that people unfamiliar with.
None will take Vangelis Pavlidis just because he scored 4 against st.gallen.

As for Benfica, they got a result that they should have gotten it. They has a expensive + well constructed team compared to the St.gallen. Failed to won the game would be in result in generational banter for them. Especially, this is only europa league, not UCL.
But it's still disappointment because they still conceded against a team that has easy difficulty. They should won this with 0 conceded consider their squad material.

Beşiktaş got really lucky with that red card though. Midtjylland were really dominant until that point. 2 red cards in 2 matches for them. Anyways Beşiktaş have a much easier job against FC Hradec Králové next time.

I'd like to see all Turkish teams in all UEFA tournaments to do as good as possible to gain more points for the country. It's important to get another direct league phase spot for the future.

I was still wondering whether Benfica are interested to contest in the Uefa Europa League when Benfica lost their first away leg game against St.Gallen as Benfica did played very poorly in that match, but Benfica impressive home performance against St.Gallen yesterday did showed that Benfica are indeed still a very strong team as they easily thrashed St.Gallen by scoring 5 goals in the match. I guess Benfica are still putting in some effort in the Uefa Europa League even though they did missed out on the qualification for the Uefa Champions League.

Natural favorites in the Europa League? I think that the Benfica team is a great team and performed really well under Mourinho last season but this is an entirely different season in a combined competition with different clubs from different leagues, do you still think they are favorites?

There are still the likes of AC Milan, Juventus and other England teams too which would stand a major opposition to Benfica in the race for the title. Also considering the exit of their coach Mourinho to Real Madrid, there would be no better replacement for him next season.

Did anyone watch the match between Hajduk and Pafos? Croatian representative Hajduk came to Cyprus with a big advantage from the first leg, 2:0, but in Cyprus they experienced a real disaster and a 4:0 defeat.
Of the other matches, I expected more from Midtjylland but the red card to their player obviously directed the match towards a victory for Beşiktaş.
Benfica the main favorite of this competition? I think it is still early for such predictions, I would wait for the group stage of the competition before making such conclusions. There are still quality teams in this competition like Beşiktaş, PAOK, Anderlecht etc. and probably some other quality team will come from the Champions League.

Premier League teams generally perform better in European matches, reducing their opponents' chances. Therefore, a special assessment is needed for Premier League teams. I don't know how Crystal Palace and Bournemouth will perform this season, but I think they will play better in European matches. Are Saying Benfica is a clear favorite? Have you got a look at teams participating in the competition? May be not, else you won't say they are clear favorites just by winning a game comfortably.
It's true Benfica is a strong side, they were brilliant last season under Mourinho but now that they've got a new coach we can't be certain about their performance just yet. Marco Silva has had an impressive record in the Portuguese league but haven't got any European success so far other than qualifying for the UEFA competitions. He's got a chance but the challenge won't be easy as they will have to compete with Juventus and Milan for the trophy. This season will be very competitive with the kinds of teams participating this season. We also have Crystal palace and Bournemouth in the race as well.

Why do they have to score a goal? The first leg ended 0:5, there is no need for them to score, not even for safety reasons. Sheriff Tiraspol will never ever score five goals away from home. Solid defense and that's it.

They are playing at home, and in European competitions, the opponent is not underestimated. Yes, it's 5 goals, but all it would take is for the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC coach to bring in reserve players for rotation and for two of his players to receive a red card for the opponent to be lucky enough to score 5 goals. It's not impossible, which is why I believe the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC coach will play seriously to win. With odds of @1.33 for Maccabi Tel Aviv FC to win, I think it's worth the risk of putting them on my parlay bet; I won't bet the usual amount I usually do.

In principle the weirdest things can happen, ok I agree, but I had to see for myself whether there is any documented case in the history of the Europa League that a team did not qualify after winning the first leg 5:0 away from home, and there is no such case. It is said that the biggest comeback ever was making up for a 0:4 in overtime after losing the first match away from home, and a 0:3 in the main round of the Europa League.

I am just saying that you used a lot of if words. What if full rotation with reserve players, what if one red card, and what if a second red card. That is a very rare set of circumstances for a single football match when there is something at stake.

Yes, Beşiktaş scored in both matches after the opponent was reduced to 10 men. This is certainly a point worth noting, but there’s another one worth mentioning as well. Beşiktaş didn’t concede a goal in either match. Last season, we had major problems in midfield and on defense. With Vincenzo Italiano, we may have made significant progress in overcoming these issues...

It’s still too early to say for sure, but as I see it, Beşiktaş is entering the season as a well-organized, high-pressing, and motivated team. If we manage to make a good striker signing and a few more signings to improve our bench, we could have a better season in the league and the UEFA Europa League...

The might able to win it if their backline showed more effort to defense insteadof standing on the pitch, then being so clueless when a counter attack came for them.

I stopped following the Hajduk-Pafos match even earlier, after Pafos' second goal because it was completely predictable what would happen next, another big defeat for Hajduk away.
Hajduk at home, in front of a full stadium of their passionate fans, always plays inspired and dominates the match, but for some reason they play completely differently away from home, without courage, they only defend and wait for the end of the match.
With such an approach and attitude, you can't win in Europe.
I think that English clubs will dominate all European club competitions this season, including this one.

It was sad to see Qarabağ saying goodbye to the EL this early. They were an interesting underdog in the CL last season as they won unexpected matches. If I'm not wrong they are still moving on with the Conference League, right?


We see even Benfica starting from the 2nd qualification stage. They have to win 3 stages to reach league phase. The Liga Portugal is sending only 1 team to the EL and even that has to go through this many phases.

But they should be okay with leaving all these behind anyway I think. They are a serious contender for even winning the tournament.
