One exchange that had a huge influence on Bitcoin trading was BitMex. It was one of the most preferred platform for professional traders and speculators back in the days.
On the 23rd of July, 2026, the BitMEX team made an announcement on their official page on X that the will shut down operations on the 23rd of September 2026.

Though the exchange did not disclose it reason for shutting down but we can deduce what went wrong.
One reason could be regulation. As governments increased scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges, BitMEX faced legal challenges that damaged its reputation. Many traders moved to competitors that offered similar products while maintaining broader regulatory compliance.
Another reason could be competition. This also played a major role. Other exchanges like Binance, Bybit, OKX, and others entered the derivatives market with better user interfaces, more trading pairs, larger ecosystems, and aggressive promotional campaigns. BitMEX gradually lost the dominance it once enjoyed.
