It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $166 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. If we compare this with their entire movie industry, music industry, and even books and museum industries combined, that number doesn't match the sports betting industry alone.

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???

I wouldn't call it completely good or completely bad.

You have to understand that Betting handle and gambling losses are not same thing. Although about $166 billion in sports bets are placed here in United States, 90%+ of it has been returned to winning players.

But the problem is, majority of these loss are borne by very small number of heavy bettor. And sportsbook use data analytic to try to bring those player back again and again with free bet, odds boost and personalized offer.

Again, it would not be right to call all bettors gambling addict. Many play with limited bets following bankroll management. But for those who think I understand sports, so I can beat the bookmaker regularly, that is most dangerous trap.

Perhaps the reason is that Americans have a much higher standard of living and wealth than most countries, and therefore can afford to spend much more money on other things than people in poorer countries. In fact, the figure you cited is enormous, given the large population of the United States, so taking all this into account, you also need to know the number of players to divide it to understand the average amount. There are very wealthy players who can bet millions, and there are less wealthy ones who bet tens of dollars or hundreds of dollars. Therefore, it's difficult to draw conclusions from this figure alone.

Thank you for sharing that info. We focus on details sometimes, about strategies and odds and rakebacks and ewe somehow forget that gambling is not the the activity you do to entertain yourself from time to time, but a collective, connected and global activity of dimensions that, when contrasted with other entertainment industries, are much larger than one might imagine.

As per the future, IMO the future will depend on the corporate social responsibility of firms, on regulation and, above all, on self-regulation or on how the new generations are able to control their impulses.

An increase in the population of gamblers in the united states only suggest that sports is getting more popular in the united states and with the popularity of sports also comes the aspect of an eventual increase in the population of active gamblers in such region. Does that suggest a positive thing for the united states? Not at all, an increase engagement in gambling can mean many things and one of them is that it means that more people are jobless and resort to gambling as Thier therapy.

2025 gives a build up to 2026 which is this year that the world cup was held in the united states, that's also a factor that can jointly contribute to the extent of involvement in gambling related activities around the united state.

In my opinion, rationally, anything that could jeopardize financial stability is clearly not going to be good. Regardless of your speculative opinions, it's ultimately gambling.

Sports betting may be very popular in America. There's nothing inherently wrong with a society's high level of gambling, but this also means that the dangers are even closer because addiction often occurs without people realizing it, right? And no matter how good your analysis is, there will always be painful moments. My only hope is that people there will continue to treat gambling without going beyond its limits.

$16 billion is just net revenue of sportsbook.
And total amount of money Americans bet was over $166 billion!

I read the report and it says that movie industry is generated $8.8B, music industry is $30B. Books, museums and much of the broader art and entertainment sector together generate somewhere around $70 billion in annual revenue. There is $166 billion in sport betting alone! Roll Eyes

It completely shocked me.

imo, this is not a good thing at all. But rather an epidemic that is affecting economy and psychology of modern society. Therefore I refuse to call it anything other than exploitative corporate capitalism.

It will of course be interesting to get all data clear and not just only the amount of bet placed in a year, at least let get the total won bet amount and the total lost amount then we can conclude if it’s healthy for the community or not.

In general a lot of people will want to say it’s more of negativity to the society but until data can prove to me that it is, otherwise I will not draw any conclusions. There are people whom have build a better life just from gambling, creating job for unemployed youths by building businesses from the won funds. How about that?
When it comes to gambling, the conclusion whether its bad or good cannot be generalised, it’s more of individual judgment.

gambling as a general habit could not seen as positive. Anyway there is no reason to ban or to keep it illegal.
it could become interesting to see how this could impact bitcoin price in the upcoming years.
there are clearly better options and advantages on using it. probably this could lead to more adopters and also have a positive effect on the network. likewise what happens with most of predictions markets. they had just lead a massive numbers of new users to crypto.

It's clear that more people will be gambling than using their money to go to the museum and watch movies because gamblers are always expecting profit whenever, they place their bet. That expectation lead more people to gambling and make the old gamblers to gamble regularly.

I'm not surprised at this information because it's same down here in my country since gambling can turn your financial situation around but the chance is very slim. Majority of people in the world want to get rich overnight.

Even though it's a very high amount, it's not a surprising amount. Just seeing the amount without context will freak people out, but when you consider certain things, it makes sense. We can start from the fact that the US have big earners compared to many other countries, so they actually have the money to gamble. Then we can look at how it is one of the countries, if not the country that loves and participates in sports the most. Almost every I know in the US has a sports team. It could be baseball, basketball or American football, or any other sport. One way or another, they are passively or actively supporting one sport. It's almost like a part of their culture.
Then there is the fact that there are so many sports to bet on. At any given time, there are thirty to forty different sports to bet on across the country. And these sports come indifferent leagues. Then you look at their population.
So in a country where hundreds of millions are sports fans, and they earn considerably well (relative to most countries), with a lot of sports options to bet on, it makes sense for the figure to be that high.
Then when you consider the marketing. I mean, it's common knowledge that no one else markets better than the Americans, and we know that sports betting and casino companies take marketing seriously.

The figure I'm surprised about is the total amount of winnings paid. I had no idea people won like that. So out of the $166 billion, about $150 billion was paid out as winnings. I find that hard to believe, if I'm being honest.
I expect it to be about 50-60% of the total stake.

Actually Gambling right now has both positive and negative effect in society.  the positive side is  most people think sports betting is a form of entertainment just like video games and other activities. If people gamble using licensed casino states can collect high amount of taxes from gambling revenue which can be used on the state.

The negative side is addiction, although most people gamble for fun a small percentage of people develop addiction although they are small but their actual number is still in million globally.

I don't know if that's a lot or a little. The US population is 350 million, so that means each person bets an average of $474 per year. Is that a lot? If you calculate it per day, that's $1.30. For the US, that seems like an insignificant amount. Considering that true betting enthusiasts wager thousands and tens of thousands in a single weekend, the amount left over for ordinary citizens becomes even smaller. As for whether it is positive or negative, it is not for me to decide - as long as people do it voluntarily and do not interferes to others, it is their business.

Hmm. When seeing it as volume, usually it's not the direct amount of what is really being circulated. Because a single dollar could be wagered multiple times, and it could increase the volume but not the actual fresh money from people. I think this should be clear.

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???
I don't think it's positive to society and possibly depends on how you look at it. It's mostly the problematic things like addiction in what makes it negative.

To say if this is enormous amount or not, we must first know how much other countries spend on gambling, and how much US spend money on different industries and directions. How does $166 billions were calculated? If there are gamblers in casinos, who weekly wager $15-20 millions per week then $166 billions for whole US that have 343millions population, is not that much frankly.

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???
For me, I am not surprised or surprised when people in New York, New Jersey, especially the United States, bet a fantastic amount of US$ 166 billion, even though the news says it's the highest betting volume ever in the US, to me that's normal.

Unless there is news that says, the Philippines, India, Singapore and others, when people there bet US$166 billion, that's just extraordinary, we know that US people in general like sports, especially football, So it is normal for many people to bet on sports betting.

What's more, the world knows that the biggest sports betting industry and gambling market is in the United States and Europe, so it makes sense that the biggest sports betting peak is in the US.

It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $166 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. If we compare this with their entire movie industry, music industry, and even books and museum industries combined, that number doesn't match the sports betting industry alone.
-cut-
I wouldn't even compare rest of the culture, because motivation on going to movies or concert and motivation to gamble have very different reasons. People don't go to movies in hopes for life changing money, and huge amount of people seem to still think that casinos are legit way to make money.

They can even be desperate enough to see it as an only way out. When whole economic system is rigged against them and no one is providing a safety net. There used to be a time when you took any low level entry went and managed to save enough to by a home. That's not as easy anymore and people controlling the supply make more money if they rent their space.

Comparison to Finland for example, there's government subsided housing, healthcare and education. And people are managed to move on their own from parents without debt early on. While salary is lower, there's less need for that "life changing" money, when people don't live in constant fear being poor.

On the one hand, such a massive volume of sports betting means huge tax revenues, new jobs, and the growth of the entertainment industry. On the other hand, betting has become far too accessible, and more and more people are starting to treat it as a source of income rather than entertainment. In my view, this is the main risk for the American public.

There's financial incentive to be earned with sports betting than those other areas, so am not surprised.

That's depends on what you mean because from what i see it is positive for the government long as tax remittance from the gambling platforms is concerned. So in this case it's positive on one side and somehow negative on the other side.

POSITIVE: with that increase it also means a high volume of tax payment to the government which the government would in turn used those tax funds for the development of the society in terms of infrastructures.

NEGATIVE: with a growing number of gamblers it's something to be worried about how many addicts there may be in the exploding bets.

To understand how dangerous the USA is in terms of sports betting, we first need to know how often those who are betting are betting and where the money is coming from. If a high-income person, after meeting all his needs and fulfilling all his family responsibilities, bets for entertainment purposes, then it should not be called harmful. However, the participation of young people here can be a much more problematic issue. Because they are young, they make most of their decisions emotionally due to their high emotions. As a result, they can become addicted to gambling very quickly, and then they will choose many bad ways to earn money for betting . Especially during their skill development, when they themselves need to focus on their future career, they are wasting time by betting. And one thing that can be observed among the youth is that at first they bet for entertainment purposes, but later they choose it as a way to get rich quickly, they want to make a profit continuously, as a result they go to the extreme level of addiction day by day.

And it would not be right to judge whether sports betting is good or bad because of betting so much money in a section like sports betting. Since the amount is large, since the USA is a very rich country economically, it is not unusual for the people of their country to spend more amount on betting or entertainment. If most of the gamblers here are betting on sports for entertainment purposes and betting within the limit according to their economic capacity, then there is no need to think of it as such a bad level. However, young people need to be discouraged in the matter of betting. This will reduce other social problem .
