Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts??? It's hard to say this to be a good thing especially when talking about gambling so the risks will obviously always be there. Maybe this will feel good for the government because they can benefit more from gambling its society with increased taxes but for the society itself I would not say that this would be a very good thing for them. But here the change is quite pronounced because maybe now sports in America are not only focused on basketball or American Football but for now the craze for football in America is also getting bigger especially with some big names joining MLS that will more or less change their betting patterns to be more varied. 166 million just for sportsbetting it is obviously very big I am curious about the total amount of gambling with which to play slots or other casino games.

It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $166 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. If we compare this with their entire movie industry, music industry, and even books and museum industries combined, that number doesn't match the sports betting industry alone.
You're comparing apples and oranges! I go to a movie with $50 , I buy the ticket, I spent $50 I enjoy the movie, I get out. I place 5 bets worth $50, I lose two I win 3, I place another $30, I win all, I put all my $60 on a bet I lose all. I spent $50 but I put $140 in bets.

That's America problem, I don't give two heck about the country because they are smart people anyways, who am I to teach them right? They have been making loads of money through their physical casinos I heard.
I don't think that they can stop casinos or people who are into gambling, I mean these people have asylums and correction centers, how are these centers going to make money too? Top on the food chain kinda puzzle going on in that country.
Like I've said , America knows what's best for them.

The bet companies are the ones gaining from this and that's the reason why there is a daily increase of gambling sites and bookies because it has become a profitable business not just In America but it's common in almost every part of the world but America seems to be the country that players spend more on sports betting.
The problem with America has always been the fact that they do too much and the reason why the rate of losses is that much is because making Money is very easy in America as long as you are willing to work for it you'd definitely get it.
This isn't much of an issue because those that engage in betting are adults and they are responsible for the decisions that they make, as long as it doesn't affect them negatively or makes the country go backwards.

No, I don't think it would have a positive impact on society. Some people might argue that as gambling becomes more popular, it will become legal in more places, creating new job opportunities with relatively high salaries in the gambling industry. However, the reality is that gambling addiction is also likely to increase. In the long run, I believe the negative consequences far outweigh the positive ones.

That $166 billion, as per the article, isn't including the prediction market sports bets. Seems like going there and is the same for my country. There is more exposure to gambling, both for casino games and sports betting than to banking products (deposit and investing). I guess that these statistics done by statista is accurate, that there will be a $655 billion in revenue to be generated for this year alone. Sports betting is the new entertainment not only for America but it's a global thing on this era.

Sports betting is legal in different states of America. They consider sports betting as a center of entertainment. Many people think that sports betting is the same level as getting some entertainment outside. One of the reasons for its increasing interest in America is that they have widely accepted sports betting. If you can conduct responsible gambling, there is no problem, but for those who do not do so, sports betting will definitely cause harm. Since gambling is legal in America, many gambling institutions have been established in the country, from which the government can also earn a large amount of revenue. Sports betting is done in all places, but where there is widespread acceptance, the number of sports bettors will also be higher. There is no reason to worry about it if you can conduct responsible gambling. But if the gambler gambles beyond his own ability and becomes an addicted gambler, then he has to loss.

Again, it would not be right to call all bettors gambling addict. Many play with limited bets following bankroll management. But for those who think I understand sports, so I can beat the bookmaker regularly, that is most dangerous trap.
Sure, there are certain people who tend to control there urge or there activities in betting daily or weekly as the case may be. But just as you said, the real problem lies in those who feel they know it all, forgetting that it's just betting and anything can happen. We know no bet is sure, there is no guarantee whatsoever for a trusted win. So, we only bet hopefully, meaning, it might win or lose. Perhaps, if gamblers gamble with such mentality, it will help curb the spread of gambling addiction. Those who claim to be experts in gambling suffer more. Because they feel it all depends on tactics, knowledge, following stats and all of that. But they keep loosing, and they don't learn too, but they keep getting trapped daily. Out approach to gambling matters alot as to wether we can turn gambling addicts in future or not. Trying to take record of your spending in gambling daily or weekly, in other to monitor your excessive gambling is one good way to keep yourself in check. Secondly, ensuring you don't bet with money meant for personally or family use. I mean money meant for basic needs or for use. We must ensure that if we are betting, it should be money that's out of use, and of course, some money carved out for it, and there should be a check or limit of the amount to be used if you frequently bet. There must be a check, else, we gradually walk into an uncontrollable state of gambling.

Did you not see the $1m dollars Drake pledge on Argentina to win and they failed. Now imagine how many celebrities that must have bet such amount of money on him because they want expected him to win and calculate other people that are not celebrities and yet rich they bet on him. That's millions we are taking about. I don't think even Drake will host a show and go home with $1m easily, he will have to do plenty of gigs before he makes that amount. The gambling industry is so big that it has no haters, there are people that don't like music that much but same people can still like gambling. People don't listing to music regularly or do subscription and pay for shows every day but half of gamblers spend more of their time gambling, that's money been generated. It scary that this number is big, I don't think we will be able to control it because people will do what they want.

This says one thing. Many people can't just watch football without betting on it. I don't think it's only football. Seems it's every sport. The interesting thing about this is that investors are seeing and they only follow one thing, where the money goes.
I just hope with this figure, there shouldn't be a massive betting problem. Money flow supposed to go to where it will improve the society.
This goes further to say people are now betting based on the financial expectation that comes with it. It is shifted from just being a game to enjoy to a hub where money can be made.

NFL or any sport in general is a religion for the sport fanatics and the numbers keep growing because the population increases, inflation makes the value of currency drops and everything has been recorded now due to online betting culture rather than an unregulated market that paid no taxes before.
Is it a good thing? It depends on who is asking the question.
It is good for the country, government, bookies and not that good for the people who spend money.

In 2025, the estimated amount spent by Americans for movie industry reached about $8.87 billion having '' A Minecraft Movie'' as the top release and roughly $11.54 billion for the music industry, which are obviously nothing to the estimated amount that Americans placed for sports betting that reached about $166 billion, although some amount have been returned to gamblers as their wins and bonuses.
Now, is this a positive thing for the society? I don't think it's a sign for positivity for the whole society since people will be more likely fall for severe financial debt, mental and emotional health harm, addiction growth, and family and social problems. Some may managed for responsible gambling but majority will surely fall on the trap of gambling.
However, rest assured the country's economy will profit as bookmakers will contribute high taxes, even at the expense of the people's welfare.

It is absolutely true that a lot of people spend money on gambling in America. Since sports betting is legal in America, more people than usual are attracted to sports betting. Gamblers do not have to go through extra hassle to bet on sports betting, so many more people than usual spend money on gambling. I think gambling is safe for a gambler as long as it is under his complete control, through which the gambler will not face big financial losses. But when a gambler gambles beyond his means, it causes big problems for the gambler. However, we have to accept that nothing in excess of quantity can bring anything good in the future.

On the one hand, such a massive volume of sports betting means huge tax revenues, new jobs, and the growth of the entertainment industry. On the other hand, betting has become far too accessible, and more and more people are starting to treat it as a source of income rather than entertainment. In my view, this is the main risk for the American public.
While it contributes positivity for the whole economy of the country, such gambling practice will also lead the people to ruin their own financial system and cause economic harm most especially for gambling addicts because they will have an uncontrollable spending habit for the sake of their own entertainment. However, I'm not saying that since a lot of Americans love gambling, then everyone may be prone for gambling addiction. Of course, there will always be people who are responsible on what they're doing especially with money matters, but we can't ignore the possibility that when a country is giving high concerns for gambling entertainment, then majority of the people will eventually take time to learn gambling, even those minor ones, and that creates a huge risk for financial harm for those who end up as irresponsible gamblers.

You don’t have to compare both markets; the entertainment industry is where the real spend just for entertainment is happening, and you don’t expect it to be that large. If this statistic is correct, it can also prove the long debate of those who gamble for fun and for money, as it’s obvious that the majority of these bettors are doing it because there is a chance for them to win from it. It will of course be interesting to get all data clear and not just only the amount of bet placed in a year, at least let get the total won bet amount and the total lost amount then we can conclude if it’s healthy for the community or not.
From the same source shared in the op, there is a small statistic which does not show the total number of winners but talks about how 90% of that amount still goes back to paying winners, which I don’t know how accurate that can be. Handle is gross throughput, not consumer expenditure: over 90% of what is wagered gets returned to bettors in the form of winnings. That $1,000 in bets translates to roughly $100 in average losses per adult. “That overall doesn’t really seem to be a crisis,” Matheson said, but he argued the real crisis is the distribution of losses.

I'm not surprised by the figures. US is the largest gambling market in global ranking. For now, it's a positive thing for the society. It generates revenue for states, create jobs in tech etc but in the long run? That's where it becomes a thing of concern. Presently, most gamblers gamble responsibly. Few are addicted but the number would keep growing if things left unchecked. People should be free to spend on leisure as they see fit as long as they are adult but how this number keeps increasing even in less developed countries is alarming. Over 60 millions people engaged in gambling in Nigeria.

The American consumer market has long been known as the biggest and richest, so the fact that they were effectively banned from many forms of online gambling for decades was bound to unleash a tsunami of spending. You could even say that because they were so shielded, they are overcompensating now and maybe ill prepared for the relentless advertising that was unleashed. Europe was a bit more lax on gambling but has carefully crafted laws that eliminate some of the excess of these companies, but it was basically a free-for-all when sports betting laws were rescinded. It would not be surprising to see this number continue to climb for a long time to come and more operators are opening up, as states deregulate further hoping to snag these companies for tax revenue.

I'm not surprised that Americans seems to have wagered the highest amount on Sport betting, which is more than that of museum, art, movies, music and concerts all combined. But let's not forget that America is not the only country that is facing such, as every other countries where gambling is legal also face the same situation. And the reason is simply because these other sectors don't offer the means or ability for a gambler to make more money just like gambling does. which is why gambling seems to have the highest number of people, simply because people keeps trying their luck while hoping to be lucky and hit a jackpot. And the moment they don't, they don't stop but keep trying over and over again. Or which the more they keep trying, so does the amount spent on gambling keep increasing, of which such is not possible with the Music and art industry. So I'm not surprised, because the gambling industry have always taking the lead.

Now this explanation makes sense because the figure was somehow confusing to me, especially how the op compared it to the entire entertainment industry. This is just a simple maths of how wages are also calculated in the casino, because my record saying I have wagered $140 does not mean I have deposited $140 it simply means I might have deposited any amount and recycled it down to that amount, which could also be what's happening in that data shared aside from the fact they pointed out 90% going back to the bettors that number could have also been gotten from the total wagered and not actual deposits.

Honestly, for me, the growth of sports betting has both positive and negative sides. It can create jobs and also generate revenue, but the bigger concern is how easily people can become too involved most especially when betting apps are always available on smartphones, and again, the industry is growing; do not automatically assume that society does benefit equally, if proper education, responsible gambling, and age restrictions is not effective alot of people can develop unhealthy gambling habits. So the real question is not only how much money the industry generates but how much harm it can cause to the ordinary people with time.
