Sports betting itself isn’t actually a bad activity itself, but the constant and rapid growth, not just in the US but also in other parts of the world can actually be said to be worrying. Now, gambling is almost part of everyday life in both developed and underdeveloped countries which has given room for players to easily develop gambling problems. Ordinarily, gambling was made to entertain people, but the real challenge in the world of gambling now is having to actually enjoy the benefits of gambling without creating an avenue where people easily get addicted, incur debt and experience financial hardship due to gambling.
We can't conclude that it's bad even with the rapid growth of betting and casino. There are plenty of things we need to look into carefully. An average person does not have access to internet last 15 years, phones were not cheap and casino were not even available for mobile, it was casino center and some online casino back then and today we have more people that are interested in building more casino that's why we have more casino growth. The internet is cheaper today compare to then, so this growth is not abnormality, it's a trend that will reach it peak and I'm sure that if people don't see profit in gambling they will stop. Some people that are gambling today are doing it not because they are profitable, they are gambling simply because they saw other people gambling, they will either break even and leave and the ones that are making nothing will eventually leave betting.

It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $166 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. If we compare this with their entire movie industry, music industry, and even books and museum industries combined, that number doesn't match the sports betting industry alone. Ouweee!! $166 billion in sport betting alone. Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts??? The general public aren't Zombies. They also have a right to exercise freewill. It's not moving in favor of the general public, so what? You think anyone cares? Not even the government.

Majority of people in the world want to get rich overnight.
And they think gamble is the right place for them to become rich overnight? This kind of mindset is what has kept on bringing more people into gambling and probably make them keep losing more money in the long run. Sometimes I keep wondering how most of us see this thing called gamble, however gambling companies will keep on making money from us and we'll keep having more of addiction cases because people has refused to see gambling from the appropriate direction. The general public aren't Zombies. They also have a right to exercise freewill. It's not moving in favor of the general public, so what? You think anyone cares? Not even the government.
That's true, nobody really cares not even the platforms that are directly involved. We all have the right to choose when to gamble and when not to. Because the only way someone can be really affected is when you give your whole life and time to gamble, and to crown it all when you think you can escape poverty with it or make it a stream of income otherwise you aren't concerned about it.

The amount of money Americans spent in sports betting in 2025 is crazy, but I'm not surprised with that figure because American has 10.6% poverty rate, meaning a lot of people living in America have the money to gamble. Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts??
I wouldn't say it's a positive thing for the society because I know the negative impact gambling will have in a society if a lot of people loss control but, since gambling is legal in American and no one is being force to gamble, I'm okay with the rapid growth of gambling in America.

I'm curious: does this count as good news? Because does this also mean that Americans are active in sports? Like, them being active in sports = physically fit/healthy? Or do they not care about sports themselves being active, like they are just into gambling?
Perhaps the majority just wants to make money from gambling. McDonald's, burger King and the rest should be reviewed for how many obese individuals they have contributed to. That's one known reason for unhealthiness, sports doesn't make a lot of difference.
It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $166 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. Yet they have thousands of homeless people on the street and shortage of affordable housing?? You think everyone in America is rich according to data reports---Dyor, perhaps you'll understand how their taxation policies and bills can leave you with $400k out of a million.

This is a country's budget for the year, it feels so surreal to see. The numbers are scary but it quite explains it because the US government has made it easy for citizens to live a normal life which would make it even more easier to spare some money for gambling. I made my research and found out that the amount spent on sport betting in the US is more than the four other countries that follows combined and that is not quite the best image for the US citizens.

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???
Actually, the figure doesn't represent loses but the total of what bettors have gambled with and that includes both loses and winnings. However, on the societal view and benefit, we have to remind ourselves that American government tax on gambling winning as income. So whilst the gambler is winning and benefitting, the government is also generating income through tax which goes back to the society as social welfare and amenities. Talking about those who are losing from their bets too, the US economy has a strong wealth creation opportunities that even the less skilled person can get a livelihood that they may not depend on gambling for survival unlike many other gamblers in other countinent. So I believe the $166 billion going into gambling in the United States is a win win situation. The government get something from it, the casinos and also the players, then it goes back into the economy and losers also benefits through jobs and social welfare system. The "win-win" spin easily forgets about who pays for that $166 billion. Research has always found that about 20% of gamblers account for about 80% of the income, and that 20% is mostly tilted towards problem gamblers. So, yes, governments take tax and casinos make money. However, numbers only add up because small number of people are losing much more than they can afford. That is hard sell to call it a community benefit as some tax income flows back. US social safety net argument also has its limits, the rates of gambling addiction are much higher in lower income communities where that “strong wealth creation” is least possible.

I don’t see it as a problem as long as people gamble responsibly. I gamble too and spend money on it, so I wouldn’t automatically describe the growth of the industry as something bad. Of course, gamblers lose money, but the government also earns revenue from taxes, so the industry still contributes to the economy in some way. For many of us, gambling is simply entertainment. We may not receive a physical product after spending, but we pay for the excitement and experience, just like people spend money on movies, games, or other hobbies. The real concern is addiction and irresponsible gambling. But if the industry continues growing without gambling-related harm becoming a major problem, then I think that can be viewed as a positive sign. Losing is part of gambling, and responsible players should already understand that before placing a bet.

According to my research, the 10.6% of American population living in poverty is estimated to be around 37 million people. So it's normal for American to have thousands of homeless people on the street and shortage of house, which can be cause by population growth. There's no country that's poverty free on earth, so I don't think everyone in American is rich and comfortable.

This is very interesting, though you are comparing something that people spend money on daily to something people do occasionally like movies or music where that much money isn't spent, this simply shows that gambling is a deeply rooted activity, and this is just for sports betting, include the rest and the numbers become even more unrealistic and I see people talking about putting an end to gambling, talk about idealists who aren't realistic.

You’re right. Not everyone, or should I say, not many people spends that much on movies, music and other forms of entertainment, and that’s totally because these other activities are strictly meant and about fun and entertainment and they’re not even rewarding, I mean financially of course. And giving that people are more interested in activities that can actually reward them financially, of course they’ll spend more time and money in gambling because they can have fun and still be rewarded there. So the number doesn’t even surprise me, I even expect it to be more than that. lol.

US social safety net argument also has its limits, the rates of gambling addiction are much higher in lower income communities where that “strong wealth creation” is least possible. So are you with my view? because it appears you are from your last paragraph and submission. If wealth distribution in countries with lower income is least possible then it means those who lose more in American communities where access to jobs is higher still have tendency of getting money through other means like their work or social security unlike other communities with lower income and unemployment, that's the point. If you are gambling and contributing to the huge amount of $166 billion while you still have secured source of income, your chances of addiction and or depression is reduced as you have some level of financial assistance and protection from the recycling of government taxed generated and casino reinvestment into the system. So I think we are making same argument except you think otherwise.

That figure is indeed interestingly massive, but we have to remember that money in gambling moves faster than those other industries mentioned above. So, that means the $166 billion is the total amount of bets placed, and not the total amount of revenue the casinos/sportsbooks have earned. More than three quarters of that amount can be returned to the winning players. Based on this statistics, about almost 90% of the total wagered amount was returned to the players, as it only generated $16.80 billion in gross gaming revenue out of $165.58 billion in handle sportsbook have processed. So, that brings it closer to the amount people have spent on books, museums, music, and movies. But then again, we have to consider that gambling moves money and recycles faster. The primary basis if we compare gambling to these other industries, should be the total revenue, not the total amount wagered.

The primary basis if we compare gambling to these other industries, should be the total revenue, not the total amount wagered. That’s a much clearer explanation because some people might immediately assume that the total amount wagered is the same as the casino’s revenue. When they see a figure like $165 billion, they may think the industry actually earned that whole amount, which is not how it works. The total wagered amount is only the betting volume. The sportsbook still has to pay the winners, so its actual revenue is only the amount left after payouts, before other expenses and taxes. This also matches the figure from the source below. As of May 2026, the reported revenue is only around $7 billion, so saying the industry already made $165 billion in revenue would be way too far off. https://www.americangaming.org/resources/commercial-gaming-revenue-tracker/

I think it's not so much that players want to bet, but that there's been a lot of publicity, even hidden behind Drake's wins and losses. When players heard the news, they initially thought he was unlucky, but then they thought about it and decided it would be a good idea to bet, and that I, personally, would definitely get lucky. But that's just saying, and besides, even those around us bet too much, whether it's at work or in schools. This is because many players want to get rich and show off their luck, but before that, it's better to ask ourselves why we should win, and not just another player, just because of luck.

It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $166 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. If we compare this with their entire movie industry, music industry, and even books and museum industries combined, that number doesn't match the sports betting industry alone. Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts??? This is very interesting, though you are comparing something that people spend money on daily to something people do occasionally like movies or music where that much money isn't spent, this simply shows that gambling is a deeply rooted activity, and this is just for sports betting, include the rest and the numbers become even more unrealistic and I see people talking about putting an end to gambling, talk about idealists who aren't realistic. Gambling is too hard to leave if you have been doing it for a long time people gamble daily in different casino even off line betting, several people talks about stopping and this are people that have lost severally in gambling some has sold their property just because of gambling addiction if people can just gamble responsibly what money they can afford to loss they wouldn't be talking about putting an end in gambling.

This doesn't even surprise me because America has a large population and also it is a country that people actually earn a lot of money, they have high paying jobs so definitely they have a lot of money to lose. Sports betting is designed to keep people addicted, that's the only way the bookies can make significant profit. But I don't really think that the figure actually shows what gamblers have lost, that's probably the cumulative stake of every bettor.

I have two things to observe in regard to this. 1. Is it possible that this information was obtained from a particular gambling casino that is most recognized in America, or was it an overall statistic obtained from all regulated gambling platforms in the US? 2. I want to believe when it comes to gambling, I don't think us is the number one country that has high rate of gambling activities, but I won't also dispute the fact that people can be found staking high in gambling including Americans, but how can accurate could this result be if truly as claimed, what are the indices used to differentiate America from any other country and to have such statistic above them.

I don?t see it as a problem as long as people gamble responsibly. I gamble too and spend money on it, so I wouldn?t automatically describe the growth of the industry as something bad.
I don't see it as a problem either if people spend a few euros on entertainment whether it's cinema, whether it's traveling or playing, the important thing is that they don't waste the money There is not only gambling as a vice or rather as an addiction, there are many and all treacherous.

Of course, gamblers lose money, but the government also earns revenue from taxes, so the industry still contributes to the economy in some way. Did you just say the industry contributes to the economy in some way? Look, the revenue generated by these industries funds the entire business plan, settles the government, run expenses and still puts the profit margin on high scale for both the bookies and the owners. In this case, it's a win win for everyone so the government is not expected to place any type of sanctions as that may affect their large chunk of cut. The real concern is addiction and irresponsible gambling. But if the industry continues growing without gambling-related harm becoming a major problem, then I think that can be viewed as a positive sign. Losing is part of gambling, and responsible players should already understand that before placing a bet.
They have ways to control the system and check for irresponsible gambling and addiction problems, but the enforcement of these rules will still not make any difference If a gambler is reckless.
