It is interesting to know that Americans placed around $166 billion in sports betting in 2025; that shows how popular sports betting is. If we compare this with their entire movie industry, music industry, and even books and museum industries combined, that number doesn't match the sports betting industry alone.

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???
There are several issues and assumptions in your thread, but let me address the question first. If you want to be concerned with the particular problem of addiction of any kind, the best solution is always a complete and radical ban! However, imagine the response of NPC humanoids if you banned their alcohol, gambling, cigarettes, and most extremely sugary products. They would riot over this more than they would riot over losing liberties, because they are useless animals that behave and are treated like cattle. The governments can't do this approach because of this, that is why some behaviors that are extremely dangerous are allowed but the government try to strike a balance between allowing and not creating too many addicts -- that is why we have regulations, otherwise there would not be a need for them.

Next, the number that you quote does not mean what you think it means. It is clear that most users in this thread did not think for 2 seconds what the actual number represents. The amount wagered is not the amount that is lost by bettors, this does not mean that people took $166 billion of their own money and put it into gambling. A very big percentage of this money is recycled through continued betting, people who win often continue to bet again. So the actual revenue is only a fraction of this number, unless it is misreported. Therefore, the economic impact of this is much less than it seems. Going back to the harm to society, it has nothing to do with the amount wagered -- you literally can't derive any interpretation from that. What matters more is how gambling is distributed across the population, and the smaller group of people that gamble and develop actual addiction related problems accounts for disproportionately big share of the whole losses. So most of the harm that gambling does is concentrated in a small group. This puts aside that any gambling is harmful and it has a negative impact on your behavior across everything that you do, but you get the point. We can ignore the small issue compared to the big issue or at least until we solve the big side of it.

It is also the country with the most billionaires and millionaires, and gambling is legal and isn't considered something bad there, so you can expect such numbers coming from such a country, obviously. Did you know that the United States has more than 23 million people with a net worth of more than a million dollars? That's right, so when people have money and they love sports and also gambling, they are surely going to spend money on sports betting.

And, another interesting fact is that the country with the most gambling addiction is actually Australia and not the USA, which proves that those numbers don't actually mean that the country has a lot of gambling addicts or addiction, and society is getting harmed because of this. Gambling is bad only when it is making you lose a lot of money, money that you can't afford to lose, but if you know that your gambling activities are not harming you or anyone around you in any way, then you are good.

So unless people get addicted to gambling and spend all their money on it, they are not doing anything wrong.

Based on news articles I have read, states in the United States have made efforts to educate their citizens about gambling addiction. Some states even require all public schools to teach about the risks of gambling.

Source : www.voaindonesia.com (need translation to read it)

So, I think the American public is well-educated about gambling at this point; the rest depends on each individual. If the majority of people ignore the education they have received about gambling, they will end up becoming gambling addicts. I haven't found any data on gambling in the United States for this year, but I think it would be good to see the data, especially regarding gambling in the country, or the level of gambling addiction.

The amount of money Americans spent in sports betting in 2025 is crazy, but I'm not surprised with that figure because American has 10.6% poverty rate, meaning a lot of people living in America have the money to gamble.
Yeah, and how much people from the US gamble is also reflected by how casinos cater to them. If I'm not wrong, the US only allows social gambling, which means casinos have to be very careful with how they advertise because if they market too aggressively, that can land them in trouble and lead to being banned from operating in the US.

For example, Stake does their best to keep US customers happy by giving them monthly bonus before giving the same to stake.com, even though they are aware that upsets millions of global users. But they are willing to take that risk because the revenue from US players must be big. At the same time, there are several lawsuits against stake.us and you can find them with a quick Google search. I don't know if the lawsuits are right or wrong and whether they hold any weight, but it shows how big of a gambling industry exists in the USA.

There should be some control over these statistics, but during the World Cup I saw a lot of activity with tons of sports betting, it was crazy. I don't even know how many people were winning or losing, I just saw money changing hands. Now I see that they're still betting, but not as frequently. Of course, it must be because the football season is over, but other sports also have a lot of activity.

It's terrible for society as a whole but what is happening in the US right now is on a completely different level.

The reality is that sports betting has turned into an epidemic over there. So many people are gambling when they are completely broke, chasing the impossible dream of a big payday while sinking deeper and deeper into debt. Instead of spending actual disposable income, people are wagering money they don't even have just to catch up which only accelerates their financial downward spiral.

Over the last 20 years, the rise of the internet and mobile betting apps completely changed the landscape. It transformed gambling from an activity that required going out of your way to a casino or sportsbook into something accessible 24/7 right from your phone. What makes it even worse is how easy it has become for young people and kids to get hooked. With non stop sportsbook advertisements during live broadcasts, social media and low friction to get started, teenagers are developing gambling habits before they even understand financial management. They are wrecking their financial futures, taking on credit card debt and developing severe addictions before their adult lives have even properly begun.

Overall, this direction is bad, bad, bad for long term societal health, financial stability and public wellbeing.

I thought we spent a lot on sports betting here in Brazil, but here the amount is only $6bi/month.... that totals is just $72 bi/year and even so, I still think that is a very excessive amount, despite Brazil being a large country with a sizeable population. source

Do you think this is a positive thing for society, or are they moving in a direction that isn't going to be good for the general public in the long run, and many people will end up being gambling addicts???
As for whether is good or bad, I do not think we can estimate much just by looking to this number alone. The amount is significant, but we wild need a much better breakdown, such as: who is the main group spending this money? Are they teens/young or adults? People with low or high incomes? What percentage of their salary are they spend with betting?

You see what I mean!? Those are the kinds of data we need in order to answer your question.

damn look at those photo bet 5 usd and get 300 usd if you bet win hahaha what a good advertising. That $166 billion figure definitely sounds massive, but it helps to distinguish between the total "handle" (money wagered) and what bettors actually end up losing. Because roughly 90% to 92% of wagered funds flow back out as routine payouts , actual net losses for American bettors in 2025 were around $13 billion to $15 billion. While that is still a huge sum compared to box office or music industry revenues , the total handle isn't direct spending out of pocket, so the comparison can be a bit misleading at first glance.

It may not be right to say directly whether sports betting is positive for a society or not. It depends on the type of society you live in. In a developed country like America, investing so much in sports betting will not affect their social context much. None of the gamblers will go bankrupt either. Some may be temporarily negatively affected by crossing the limit but it will not affect their socio-economic situation much.

In a country like Nigeria, excessive gambling and addiction can have a direct negative social impact because most of them are poor or middle class. In my opinion if you can limit yourself to sports betting and keep your excitement under control, so gambling will not become addictive.

Describing this sports betting situation in America as an epidemic is an overstatement. It's just that most people see sports betting as a form of entertainment instead of a bad habit. Especially, they have a large number of sports events available every year. With different events happening every day of the year, they have a lot of choice to place their bet on.

Aside from that, ads/news are everywhere. Most people will feel to join the trend and start to place their bets simply because a lot of people are also doing it and they see many people are enjoying the fun of watching and betting on those games.

The truth is that some things are not good but people do it just to have fun and pass out time, and Gambling happenes to be one of them.  Though money is spent mostly in gambling than some order form of entertainment sector, reason being that gambling involved taking risk to make money, while others are just entertainment without hope of getting something in return. What you should know is that this money spent is not intentional, it's a random expenses, and people who gamble them don't know the amount they spent. The truth is that there is nothing to be done now since the government is getting revenue from the gambling industry. If there is no profit gotten by the government from gambling industry, they would have place a ban on Gambling or accusing them of causing addiction to the masses. Some things are just political and your contribution doesn't matter hence profit is made.

In a developed country like America, investing so much in sports betting will not affect their social context much. None of the gamblers will go bankrupt either. Some may be temporarily negatively affected by crossing the limit but it will not affect their socio-economic situation much.

It will still be affected, regardless if you are a top tier nation or developing country or poor. Gambling has a bad effects on society and we have numbers in the US that there are a lot of gambling addicts who plays sports bet. So you can't just downplay it's effect base of the socio-economic status of a country.

In a country like Nigeria, excessive gambling and addiction can have a direct negative social impact because most of them are poor or middle class. In my opinion if you can limit yourself to sports betting and keep your excitement under control, so gambling will not become addictive.

Because they want to change their lives and make a U-turn. And so some of them play and gamble all the little money that they have. But that is true to any country as well, like betting in lottery, not necessarily sports betting. And then we have a lot of news about slot games too. So everyone is going to be affected by gambling itself, even if you are in the US or in Africa.

Its just consider out the demand or simply the popularity. Betting on sports doesnt automatically means that someone would be ending up as a gambling addicts on which there would be still those people who are that dealing up with it for the sake of fun and leisure. It do really just that turned out that the numbers were actually higher compared into other things and something that can be compared and noticeable. Then whats next? It would be just that it would be fine as long it doesnt give out that negative impact on the entire community then there's no problem on dealing up with it. Sometimes we are just that thinking up too much advance that anyone would really be addicted once that it would really be that a concern but if not then there's nothing we can do about it and just let it run.

The numbers are so large because people from all money backgrounds can place bets. Whether they are poor or rich, they can easily bet money in the hope of increasing it which is why you see such large numbers.

I think the numbers are particularly high in the US because gambling is legal there. Other countries may also have similar numbers, but since gambling is not legal in many of them, people often gamble anonymously. As a result the actual gambling figures may not be fully reported.

The number of gamblers and gambling platforms is increasing which indicates that many people are looking for quick ways to make money. However, this does not necessarily mean they are becoming addicted. If people know when to stop and gamble responsibly, then I think there is no problem.

Hm, interesting. I didn't know about it. Indeed, Americans legally wagered a record $166.94 billion in 2025. I thought that, since they love going to the movies and movie tickets in the USA cost $13 to $18 each, the amount Americans spent on movie tickets in 2025 would be higher, but no, it was less than $10 billion. I think we have to keep in mind that, unlike with movie tickets, not all the money wagered on sports is lost. But still.

This is very interesting, though you are comparing something that people spend money on daily to something people do occasionally like movies or music where that much money isn't spent, this simply shows that gambling is a deeply rooted activity, and this is just for sports betting, include the rest and the numbers become even more unrealistic and I see people talking about putting an end to gambling, talk about idealists who aren't realistic.
Gambling is too hard to leave if you have been doing it for a long time people gamble daily in different casino even off line betting, several people talks about stopping and this are people that have lost severally in gambling some has sold their property just because of gambling addiction if people can just gamble responsibly what money they can afford to loss they wouldn't be talking about putting an end in gambling.
There are individuals out there who spend what others earn yearly on gambling on a daily basis, with people like this out there why won't gambling clear out it's completion by such a long margin, the entertainment industry is a successful one but that doesn't mean that people spend nearly enough on it as they spend on gambling and when someone is addicted to gambling it gets even worse, I don't think I've ever heard about someone who got addicted to movies.

In the long run, Americans are just as big spenders when it comes to gambling as the Chinese and Indians. The global gambling market as a whole has reached a betting volume of 6 trillion dollars, the vast majority of which is from unlicensed gambling, that is, conducted on unlicensed platforms, and therefore subject to manipulation.
Many casinos, including those advertised on this forum, are licensed and use cryptographic controls over the results, the outcome is determined randomly and hashed, then decrypted once the bets are settled. Blockchain plays a fundamental role in this, and believe me, it’s the only way to gamble online.

It is the segment of online gambling that has grown the most in recent years. It also seems that addiction to sports betting has been growing the most.

Hm, interesting. I didn't know about it. Indeed, Americans legally wagered a record $166.94 billion in 2025. I think we have to keep in mind that, unlike with movie tickets, not all the money wagered on sports is lost. But still.

We should keep in mind that only between 3% and 5% of bettors are profitable, so probably a high percentage of that goes to the house. A bettor who isn't profitable wins one day, bets it all again, and loses it.
