It seems that all addicted gamblers are facing the same problem, I have a friend who is addicted to gamble. And I  noticed that he gets upset over every single thing, I literally stopped talking to him because of that  attitude. And again, the manner in which he used to respond to me most of the time makes me feel that he might have a physical combat with me some day, so the only way I can avoid such thing from happening is to give him a distance. And one of the problem he has  is that he does not listen to advice, and I know that he needs help so what I did was to tell his parents about his gambling lifestyle and his recent behavior so they can talk to him.

If it was you would keep talking to him to reduce how he keeps gambling or you would allow him to continue gambling? And even if he is not paying attention to you?
My approach will depend on how close we are – if we are just mere friends that just meet on the street and nothing more than that or if we are friends turned family or somehow related to some.

If I try talking to you and you see it as a disturbance, I will stop immediately and keep my distance so that people don’t see us together and think that I’m part of your problem, but if we are that close, I won’t stop even if it will take me to inform some of our other friends and relatives for them to also talk to you; then I will do it. At the end there should be a positive result at least.

I've noticed the exact opposite behaviour.
People who are addicted to gambling over a long period of time before depressed and sedentary. They don't want to bother with anything and don't want to be bothered.

They will not attend social gatherings or try to be at any events. They will just abstain from general life activities as if that's their new normal.  It's just plain old depression which I think is becoming too wide or a societal phenomena.n
Who would open up to you when a terrible habit like that is eating them up, especially when they had a few good times to compensate their losses, but have long been spending more than usual to get the feeling back? They take it up as their own personal battle--- Interfering with that bruises their ego, esposes their vulnerability and burns them like fire.

Adulthood comes with different responsibilities attached so if there's no inward discipline, how do you deal with issues like that type of depression?

I am trying to get something straight for here about those who are addicted to gambling do have same characteristics? I have a friend who is so much attached to gambling and everyone around him knows it was an addiction and when they try to talk to him in regarding the way and manned he is putting much interest to gambling he picks offences and stops to be talking to people because they are like trying to make him understand that his gambling habits is becoming excessive.

If it was you would keep talking to him to reduce how he keeps gambling or you would allow him to continue gambling? And even if he is not paying attention to you?
There are people whom you will tell to stop gambling or to reduce the amount they gamble they will find it offensive, these people basically fall into two categories, the first category are who are gambling for survival, so telling to stop gambling or to reduce the amount they gamble is like telling them to leave what have been keeping them going in life over the years.

The second category of people are those who have lost huge amounts of money to gambling, so this set of people are gambling with the hope of recovering the money they lost to gambling one day. So, telling those people who fall into this category to stop gambling is like telling them to abandon the huge amount of money they lost to gambling just like that and move on. I was once a member of this gang until i finally advised myself my one day and move on.

'A word is enough for the wise', according to a popular wise saying I know and if I relate it to this context, after one or two conversations about such a persons growing gambling addiction, I won't say anything else because it is clearly their decision to see reason to what I said or ignore it and wallow in their pit of addiction.
I can only pray for such a person to come to their senses sooner than later before they lose all they have and become a shame to themselves and their family.
Gambling is a personal decision and choice just as other addiction is and the way out of it is a personal decision too.

It has nothing to do with gambling addiction, but can be applied to any other addictions as well and I would go as far as to say, to anything one is passionate about but passion is not as dangerous as addiction, so there is that.

...

If it was you would keep talking to him to reduce how he keeps gambling or you would allow him to continue gambling? And even if he is not paying attention to you?

Depends on my love for the person. The more the love, the more the persuasion.

Addiction to anything can have effects to how anyone thinks or reasons.

It could be that he doesn't have a singular addiction, people could be addicted to different things all at the same time. An addict who is foud of taking hard drugs would be different from that who takes alcohol or that who doesn't at all.

They don't see anyone's advice as helping but see it as an obstacle to their success through gambling. If they put up with this, they end result would be terrible and unfortunate for them.

To your friend, he feels he is at least above 18 years of age; he has the right to do whatever he pleases, as long as he is not doing something illegal or condemnable.

I think when someone reasons like they are doing something right when they are actually doing something wrong, let them be. Soon or later, they will seek people's attention to what has been affecting their lives for far too long.

In this life we live, not when someone is doing wrong things that they will get results. They won't get the results immediately. It will take a little bit longer for them to realize their stupid mistakes and actions.

If he's important to you, then stop him. If he's not your close people, then abandon him. Neverhteless only talking to him won't solve him from his addiction. So you have to take his device to force him not to gamble again, then bring him to the therapist who can slowly to bring back his behavior before he's getting addicted.

Someone who got addicted had his brain changed due to dopamine who hit his brain so hard. So he becomes much more aggressive to protect his addiction because he already lost his logic and got a withdrawal symptoms that prevent him to stop.

So whatever you said to him, he would never hear you. So the only solution is forcing him to distance from the gambling site.

I will keep talking untill he accepts and even if he does not immediately maybe sometime in his quite time he might reason it , when trying to counsel an addict, you don't need to be angry or disturbed because that is their nature, they always want funds available for them to gamble and always win and s being unable to get what they want makes them always aggressive.

Addicts never accept they are addicted so in other to help them for their situation not to get worsen is by talking to them in other for them to come out of it.

Instead of talking to someone who doesn't want to listen, you should try a different strategy, because even if you talk to him nicely, he gets annoyed. You can't change him by talking. If you want to change him, you should try a different strategy, and that strategy is to take him out for a walk and to go to different recreational places. If he has a good habit of playing sports and loves to play sports, you should take him to the playground every afternoon and attract him to sports. No matter what religion he belongs to, you should increase his attraction to religion. If his close friends and relatives can be with him like this and treat him well, I think it will be possible to bring him out of his gambling addiction in this way instead of talking to him.

I don’t agree that aggression is a common characteristics for addicted gamblers. Certain conditions might only enhance what is already a part of you or in you and not really develop a new set of character.

Am addicted gambler is likely going to loose a lot of money and would be furious about it. Reminding them of it or as friends would always do, laugh at them and find some humor over it could result in certain individuals picking offense.

Some individuals just don’t want you in their business if you aren’t funding them but, should you identify that to be a real problem, you can always try different means to bring your friend to understanding the reality of the day.

Is he your close friend?
If he doesn't want to consider your advice and he even becomes offended, you are better to talk with his family. It will be useless if you continue to advice him because he has no intention to consider anything from you. It will be different if his family members talking to him, especially his parents. He must have the willing to listen their parents and the parents can accompany him to doctors once it is needed. I'm sure it will be more effective to handle the addiction problem through the family helps.

Aggression is fear in disguise he is defensive because he knows you're right. Stop advising him. Start asking him one neutral question like if he feels happy with how things are going Let his own answer do the work for you. If he won't listen, step back. Your silence will speak louder than your words ever did.

The more you chase him with logic, the more he will fight you with anger. He's not fighting you he's fighting the truth he doesn't want to face. So take the pressure off. Be around, be normal but don't rescue him. Let him feel the weight of his own choices without you cushioning it. sometimes the best help you can give is letting someone sit with their own discomfort long enough to want change for themselves.

In your story, the guy isn't even aggressive, he's just giving silent treatment which is because he's feeling controlled unnecessarily. Gambling addicts who aren't winning constantly are always frustrated about their consistent losses, and because they cannot help it or quit gambling, they transfer the aggression from their excessive gambling to their family, friends or anyone they're in close contact with. Aggressiveness is a common trait among addicted gamblers because they lack self-control. They're always unhappy and any slightest encounter might lead to unnecessary confrontation.

There's less you could do for him, you need to support him more and offer him a way out of gambling like learning a skill if he's idle, if he would stop gambling, he needs a new hobby to replace it. If you keep showing him love and support instead of condemning him, he'll be more inclined to take it easy or totally quit gambling for his own good.

If I'm not the one feeding him the funds he uses for the bets why should I've confrontation with him if I advises him to recall himself over his gambling life?
Except there's a way that his gambling lifestyle is becoming a disturbance to my life, then I can kindly readjust he needed to make himself happy as much I've other means of creating happiness too.
There'll be an observation of privacy, not like I hate him for that. So I can actually keep distance if the necessary need rises.
It's also not all addicted gamblers are aggressive or annoying as you think, some are dynamically addicted that someone else will find out that they're addicted.

Usually when someone is doing something he knows is wrong for him, any advice you give him at that moment will looks like you are being offensive to the him and that exactly what your friend is just exhibiting. You cant really advicee someone out of gambling, i have tried, it didnt really work well but one thing i know for sure, when they wannt to stop gambling, they will stop on thier own without any help or force from anyone, its just that they are not ready yet.

Yes, I will prefer to continue to talk to him that he should reduce the amount of money that he is using to gamble. I do not care if he does not pay attention to me, what I care about is that I am telling him the truth. It is better than looking at him and not saying anything when you know that what he is doing is not favoring him.

You have to be aware absolutely nobody likes to be remembered how much money they have lost on their gambling sessions or their investments, specially if they continue to choose that path with the hope to get their money back.

It would be unfair to point to all gambler addicts and call them aggressive or violent, when in reality there are a lot of gambling addict who actually have a very sad or depressed attitude when they are talked about gambling and their losses.

It is better to leave those people alone and allow them to realize they are commiting a mistake with chasing losses...

You are just a friend, and he might not listen to you. Try seeking help from his relatives, parents, or siblings. He might listen to them. If not, they have the right to put him in rehabilitation, and probably that's where he would get help. There are limits on where we could help, and it's best if they are done by professionals.

Truly, they are aggressive because they might be frustrated or depressed with all the losses. I have been in a situation where I felt like I was near gambling addiction because I am always angry and frustrated even with small mistakes. It's a sign. Thankfully, I evaluated myself and learned to control it. Slots is what made me angry the most, so I stopped it. Now, I feel better. Back to being normal again. Gambling addiction can do many negative things to people, especially in how they behave. We must be aware of that if we really want to help them.
