I was curious if the case is still ongoing, but it looks like the guy lost the case. I was looking for more info and found a post on X saying that on July 9th, DraftKings was granted a summary judgment motion against Bavas. Right now, Bavas's team is fighting to unseal the ruling so the public can see it, while DraftKings is fighting to redact more. DraftKings is also demanding that Bavas pay their legal fees. For anyone curious, here's the post on X. https://x.com/GivnerAriel/status/2081029502138745175DraftKings is asking Bavas to pay their legal fees. https://x.com/GivnerAriel/status/2081163368761561131I wonder if it would have been more profitable for the DraftKings to pay him that $14 million? I think now anyone who understands what's going on will consider them unreliable, and maybe even outright scammers. And by the way, if they are ready to disgrace themselves so much for the sake of 14 million, then the question of their financial solvency arises. And one more question: if DraftKings made a mistake, why not revoke their license and ban them from doing business? The mistake was their responsibility, and it's one thing that the bettor wasn't allowed to take advantage of it, but why do we need such incompetent idiots in the market?

In situations like this, you dont blame the gambler; rather, the casino should be blamed for not noticing the errors. The focus of every bettor is to win. In other words, if I see a free market to win always in sports betting, I'll take the chances multiple times. But unfortunately, the bettor wasn't smart after all. Why book a bet of over $14m knowing full well that the casino will think twice about paying that amount?

This is an old case that way dates back to 2024 and 2025. DraftKings really faced some lawsuits within that period because of tricky practices, in which case it was also said they made changes to their policy to align with what they were holding their hand on to defend against the bettor.
Honestly I blame draftKing for their mischief. If they had done the needful by closing the bets on that game, then they wouldn’t have found themselves in such a mess, they wouldn’t say they didn’t know about the weather forecast, or maybe they just wanted to take their chances and accept those bets and even waited until the tournament was decided before voiding the bets, who does that. Although the method used by Bava was questionable and he acted out of greed, but DraftKing equally is to be blamed here too.

DraftKings actually won the case. https://x.com/GivnerAriel/status/2081163368761561131After winning the summary judgment on a sealed ruling, they’re seeking $23,502.80 from Nicholas Bavas.

He didn’t place a bet of over $14m, the bet was a few leg parlay that he staked with a few hundred dollars, which he split into multiple identical bets (except for one) and due to the loophole, his total payout was meant to be rounded up at $14m. And honestly the tournament was decided in his favour, and technically he won the bet, but the bone of contention here is that the bettor indirectly cheated the system to arrive at the conclusion. The bets were indeed meant to be voided, but at the first instance that the bets was made and not when the tournament was decided.

That is the price he has to pay for trying to take advantage of a loophole against a big casino. I’m pretty sure he knew exactly what he was doing when he placed those bets, especially when he was trying to turn around $300 into millions. He took the casino to court and lost, so now he may also have to cover around $23,000 in legal costs. It sounds harsh, but that is one of the risks of challenging a large company with strong lawyers. He went after a huge payout, but instead of winning millions, he ended up losing the case and possibly owing much more than his original bet. Honestly, the outcome seems fair to me.

I don't understand why people are siding with the sports book here. These sites make billions of the backs of their players, but once somebody makes a smart bet it's an exploit or what not? Hell nah! They offered the bet, stupid or not, so they should pay up, plain and simple. If I place a bet on let's say the Lakers in the NBA, and suddenly the whole starting 5 catches a cold and won't play, will I get my money back? Heck no I won't. Odds will go up like crazy which makes a cashout virtually impossible because I would lose 80% or more of my initial stake and the bet will most likely lose by a large margin.
Players take risks, when they lose they lose. If the casino takes a risk and accepts bets they should pay up either way. It wasn't a secret there is the possibility the last days will be cancelled, so there is nothing they can blame the player for.
I think people take side of sports book because from the start that gambler placed his bets only because he saw an opportunity to win bets unfair. If player place a risky bet and win, then there are no questions asked. In this case gamblers original idea was not to gamble, but to use loophole to win. How this is fair gambling if gambler has an advantage? Nevertheless, for a reputation, it would be fair to reward that gambler for being smart and using opportunity, than only return his $300 bet.

But there is another side to the story. What if the bettor was not actually aware of the loophole and simply placed the bet because the market was still open? From his point of view, he may have believed it was a valid betting opportunity offered by DraftKings. I think that was the argument he tried to present in court, that he acted normally and the sportsbook should honor a bet it accepted. Unfortunately for him, the court did not agree. His strategy failed, and instead of winning millions, he may now have to pay part of DraftKings’ legal costs.

Are you saying if the person won the huge amount of money, that the gambling site will do all things possible not to pay him the amount of money? That is the reason it it has become a court case which is very better than leaving the gambling site alone and not do anything. If he truly won the money and the betting site is able to pay the money or pay part of the money, they have to pay it.

So this guy was watching a golf tournament, and after the 3rd round there was a real chance it would be stopped because of bad weather... So he opened DraftKings and placed some crazy parlays based on the current leaderboard standings! Of course, DraftKings accepted all bets, and miracle or not, the tournament was cancelled, and $14 million became a problem...
He was betting that Sunday & the 4th round wouldn't happen... DraftKings was still offering the markets, and what now?
If Draftkings accepted his bets, then they should pay his winning, it's not his own problem that they didn't act fast and manage risks properly. Now if the guy has lost the bet, they wouldn't have returned the $300k to him. I don't personally like these kind of behavior. In my understanding this guy deserves his win. Draftkings holding it back is a very negative PR for them, they can do better and compensate the gambler with what he deserves.

Another interesting story... An Iowa gambler thought he had discovered an all-but guaranteed way to win more than $14 million by wagering just over $300, taking advantage of an apparent loophole that online sportsbook DraftKings appeared to have missed. I would have supported the story by being sided on the victim, but seeing how many have been always intended to take advantage of the casino anytime they observe a loophole clearly shows that there's probably a bug he thoughts would have been an added advantage to him against the sports book and please such bet in order to win, but things went wrong at the end of the whole show beyond his imagination.

What if the bettors have lost the bet? In most cases, these gambling platforms might not refund the bets. It is up to the court to determine if he intentionally exploited the loophole. The case is still on since there has been no public ruling yet. I would have expected both parties to settle out of court. DraftKings made a mistake by accepting bets even when there is a high tendency that the closing round might be cancelled. The court might also determine that Nicholas Bavas took advantage of DraftKings' mistake. Both parties could have common ground, and the Iowa gambler could be compensated.

~snip~ A completely complicated story, I was shocked after reading it. I don't understand who should be blamed here, If the casino offered such a betting option, the player used it and made a phenomenal win, then only the one who disputes the win is to blame. If the player lost the bet by any chance, the casino would be happy to take his money and there wouldn't be this story, right? I don't see any abuse of the system here, just someone who tried to achieve the impossible and succeeded - it's unfortunate that he now has to fight for his money in court.

I wouldn't just see this as a loophole exploit. Rather, I would also call it sportsbook's own risk management failure. If DraftKings really thought that bets on that market should not have been accepted due to possibility of 4th round being canceled then market should have been suspended in advance. There's no point in voiding bet by showing rule if outcome goes against them after accepting bet. I will never understand why the company is trying to use a defense like the "house rules" which allows them to cancel wagers and address operational errors. How is that the bettor's fault? I have never seen a case where a company retroactively voids a winning after the bet have been place, accepted and confirmed, then try to overlook other part of their policies that states that every won bet will be paid in full? That man needs to hire another lawyer as this case is taking too long. I seems, they later updated their own rule too, right? Which at least indicate that previous wording was not clear enough.
That doesn't feel right in any way.

I could understand why he fight for 14m coz it's generational amount of money. He also has his bet accepted by DK. So it's worth to fight for 14m. However, i believe all of sportbooks have term to disallow or void the bet when it's due to the technical errors. Nevertheless, it has been so long since this news appeared, but still not clarity from judgement regarding result from this case.
No doubt this guy is now moaning asking for the clarity from the judgement. So it's interesting to see whether court will rule it as a valid bet or what DK called as technical errors.
This why there is a dogma about when casino win, they take our money, but when they lose, it's all due to the glitches or technical errors. Hopefully, judgement will give clarity over this asap.
I feel the same way. The DK site is in the wrong here. As I understand it, the bettor placed a live bet, and the site accepted it. I don't think there is any chance the site will be proven right. In an environment where such large sums of money are involved, the site made a major mistake and must face the consequences.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm missing something, but to me it looks like the guy wanted to cheat and he failed. I hope DraftKings will not pay him more than $300, the money that he staked and, I think, should be returned to him. To me the whole story shows again that trying to make money on gambling is a stupid idea.
It's a two-year-old event that was reported last year. I believe the bettor tried to game the system, but it was not his fault that he was still allowed to bet on those options. It was a mistake on the part of the company, and as much as I don't agree with the bettor, we live in a world where people pay for the consequences of their mistakes, especially in a context like this. I know that there are rules that protect the casino or sports betting company in situations like this, but it's always one-sided. For example, if the weather forecast was wrong, and the bets were not won, the bettor would have lost his money, and nobody would have heard anything. Since it became clear that there was a strong possibility of the tournament getting cancelled, the least DraftKings could have done was suspend betting on the tournament until they were sure what was going to happen. After Bavas raised his objections, DraftKings updated its rules to state, “n the event there is a reduction in scheduled rounds played, bets placed on any market will be void if... the bet(s) are placed after the final shot of the most recently completed round,” according to Lynch, who provided The Independent with before-and-after screenshots of the change.
And if it's true that they updated their rules after the incident, then they're wrong. You can't use a new rule to punish a crime that was committed before the rule was made.

It's possible that this bet was taken by The Gambler intentionally to take advantage of their sports book, from the other side, we can also view it that the gambler was not being intentional by this, it is just a random coincidence that makes him to decided on playing to just win his bet, but either ways, is it not common to us that we often lose our bets in gambling? I don't expect us to take some level of risk when we know we cannot afford the consequence; therefore, this is a no-case story.

I wonder if it would have been more profitable for the DraftKings to pay him that $14 million? I think now anyone who understands what's going on will consider them unreliable, and maybe even outright scammers. And by the way, if they are ready to disgrace themselves so much for the sake of 14 million, then the question of their financial solvency arises.
DraftKings actually won the case. https://x.com/GivnerAriel/status/2081163368761561131After winning the summary judgment on a sealed ruling, they’re seeking $23,502.80 from Nicholas Bavas. Did I write somewhere that they lost? Sure, they won the lawsuit, but that doesn't change the fact that they've disgraced themselves, and now any bettor (especially high rollers) will suspect that if they win big, DrawtKings will find a way to cancel their winnings. In this sense, they definitely lost, and my question remains relevant: wasn’t it logical to sacrifice these 14 million for the benefit of their image? Now there's reason to doubt DraftKings on literally everything you look for in a bookmaker: honesty, competence, transparency, security.

Why is all the blame given to DraftKings? Don't forget that the guy in question saw a loophole and actually wanted to take advantage of it and cheat the casino but was caught. DraftKings might have missed that weather forecast or delay from their end which prevented them from stopping to accept bets on their game, but that’s not enough for a player to use and try to reap them. They were also kind enough in this particular case to allow the player to get back all his deposit instead of seizing it, the case was actually won by Draftking which I consider fair enough.

This lawsuit probably would not have happened without a complaint in the first place. So when asking whether the sportsbook would refund the bet, I think the answer is probably no unless someone actually challenges it. A gambler who lost could also use the same situation to argue for a refund, saying the sportsbook should not have accepted the bet once the event was already in that condition. That is why, for me, it still comes back to the lawsuit and how the rules were interpreted. Some gamblers may also feel confident taking action against a large casino because they think the company has the money to settle, and if they win, the payout could be huge. In a way, they may see the lawsuit itself as another chance to hit the jackpot. But regarding settlement, that part is already over. The court ruled in favor of DraftKings, as mentioned in the previous posts.
