Most people see patriotism as a positive thing. Loving your country can encourage people to contribute to the society, preserve their culture and support one another during difficult times but I also think there comes a point where patriotism can cross the line. When people refuse to acknowledge their country’s mistake or dismiss every criticism as an attack, it becomes difficult to have honest conversations or solve real problems.
On the other hand, constant negativity about one’s own country is not healthy either. Every nation has strengths and weaknesses. So where do you think the line is. At what point does healthy patriotism become blind nationalism and how can people support their country without ignoring its flaws?
Patriotism doesn't mean blind defense of the evil of the government of your country. Criticizing the wrongdoings of the people or the government is even an aspect of nationalism. The outside world needs to know both the negative and positive parts of your country. Others in different countries could learn and also give solutions to the situation your nation is going through. It is through sharing weaknesses that you can get solutions.
However, it is wrong to spread falsehoods about your country because you want to gain sympathy or prove a point. Criticism should be true and constructive. I am aware that people spread bad news or exaggerate the problems in their country to gain favor in a foreign land. I know of many people from my country who claim asylum by creating false narratives about our country.
