Interesting read on Coinbase's Canadian push this week. Their new local CEO pitched the "everything exchange" vision - derivatives, DeFi, tokenized assets, all in one 24/7 app - but the real story underneath is regulatory.

Canada was genuinely early: spot crypto ETFs before the US and a real exchange framework, years ahead. But most of it ran on staff notices and company-specific exemptions rather than purpose-built law. That worked when products were simple. Now that firms want the sophisticated stuff, the same shortcut is the bottleneck - Coinbase offers 7% on stablecoin lending in the US; Canadians get 4.5% on USDC.

To me this is the classic trade-off made visible. Move first with duct-tape rules and you win the early years but inherit a framework that can't scale. Wait for real legislation and you're slow but build something durable. The US is now ahead on tokenization guidance, and there's a decent argument that whoever codifies the rules first sets the standard everyone else adopts.

So, does being early to crypto actually matter long-term, or does the jurisdiction that writes the durable rulebook win regardless? And for anyone operating across borders - is the exemption model a real dead end, or just a phase every market goes through before proper law catches up?

It is not about being early or not that determines our achievement with Bitcoin; I'm going to present two narratives for you, and you will see what it means to be early and to have a purpose-driven plan before adoption.

Remember that El Salvador was the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender; it was followed by the Central African Republic. El Salvador, being the first to adopt Bitcoin, has a lot to show about its Bitcoin development because they were able to design a framework that supports adoption for every individual and corporate bodies in the country.

What about the Central African Republic? They are not early compared to El Salvador and yet does not develop a plan that is realistic over their adoption with bitcoin and you can see that everything seems to be of no advancement in the country because the lack every instrumentation to make a realistic plan towards the adoption for the cities and the entire government at large, being early does not matter, getting it done in the right way is more important.

Both the USA and Canada are big nations and in G7 but if you want to have another nation for comparison, it can be El Salvador. Bitcoin legal tender was made in El Salvador two market cycles ago in 2021.

It made big effects but imagine that if it is a bigger nation like the USA makes Bitcoin legal tender, impacts would be considerable bigger. That's the same with Canada, that has a smaller economy than the USA has, so they could have something earlier than the USA for Bitcoin adoption, but in general it's not strange to see they are falling behind.
