In Nigeria today, many people usually talk about financial freedom, but what does it really mean? For some people, is to have enough money that can cover up their bills without borrowing. For others, it’s to stop relying on your salary or government work before they can be able to survive. With the way inflation keeps rising and the naira keeps losing it value, many Nigerians will start to look for a different alternative to protect their money. Many are investing in business, some are buying lands, while others  are running to bitcoin because they believe that it can preserve value in the long term.

But we should not fool ourselves. Financial freedom isn’t something that can happen within overnight. Even if someone decides to buy bitcoin every month, he still needs discipline, emergency savings, good money management and patience. Bitcoin can help someone build wealth but it can’t help someone do magic that will solve all their financial problems quickly.  Another thing I noticed is that, many people are chasing after quick money instead of building long term financial stability. Some will go into high risk investments or fall for scams because they want to make quick money.

At the end, many will still lose the little money they had. Financial freedom for me, isn’t only about how much money you have, it’s about having control over your finances and making good decisions without constant financial pressure. For me, bitcoin can become one of the tools that can help Nigerians achieve financial freedom, especially if they understand the risk, invest only with money they can allow to leave for long years and practice self custody.  But bitcoin alone can’t guarantee financial freedom without good planning and discipline.

My question is that, what doesn’t financial freedom mean to you as a Nigerian?

Different people with different definitions given to financial freedom  just as you have mentioned, the way i see it is far much different from that of others but the central truth of all is without proper management all is still nothing.
Money is the only thing that comes and leaves if not properly managed by the person meant to do so.

Financial stability is the greatest task anyone wishes to achieve in life, to get to that stage in life there are different sacrifice that must be paid which are: one must be dedicated, one must forfeit pleasure and never lose hope even in difficult times.

Financial freedom means being free enough never to lack.

Life itself is limited, not infinite, for everyone. If we are financially free, it means we can sort our bills until the day we die. When we die, we can't take our achievements to the afterlife.

In the meantime, do what is needed to survive because one day we will not wake up to see them.

To an average Nigerian, financial freedom simply means the ability to be able to afford anything money can buy. Because when an individual is being able to afford buying anything that money can be bought, such as food, clothes, cars, house and properties/asset, then that person will claim to be financially free. However, this definition may varies with respect to different categories of people. Because as a Bitcoiner, financial freedom could mean the ability to be able to execute his transactions seamlessly without restriction or interruption both the bank and government. And also the ability to be able to send money across borders without passing through the rigorous processes of creating a domiciliary account before being able to send money across to family and friends staying in another country. Because for anybody who may have requested for a dollar account, will truly testify how it usually takes time and the stress o getting a physical dollar cash.

You need a good financial management to be financially free. When you have investments that generates income for you overtime and you spend less than your total income, you're financial free. It isn't easy to build wealth and control it to the point that you'll be financially free. I think for an average man when you build a house and can buy whatever you want till you go see your ancestors, you don achieve financial freedom my brother. Life no pass like this.

In my own perspective, I think that an average Nigerian sees financial freedom as having the ability to afford anything they need or want without having to as anyone for a favour.

And in addition, you are not going to be working under anyone and be calling them sir or maa, because as long as you are working under person where you financial destiny is not in your hand, you are not financially free. Many people might have a different definition of financial freedom, but I believe that once you are able to afford anything you need and your financial future is in your hand, not in the hands of any company or government that can fire you anytime they pleases, then you have gain financial freedom.

Offcourse that's true. When someone can be able to funds what they want at any given time with out directly or indirectly relying on someone to sort things out for them. However, gaining financial freedom varies , depending on the individual actual stage of life at that very point of his life. Let's see it like this: a normal daily hustler will say he's financially free when he have advanced to a stage that he can boldly afford his needs by himself without depending on nobody. While a average person that's already doing well for himself will consider been financially free when he have moved from the level of just purchasing what's he wants into started investing here and there, and by so doing money we keep on working for him. That's just how the process keep on going because financial freedom can't always be on the same level.
