There is this warning I've always read on here in the past, not sure about now and it goes like this...

Don't rush to update your hardware wallet instantly because updates can be buggy or unstable.

My question now is how long should one wait before updating their hardware wallet to the latest firmware?
How long is protective enough in your book to avoid ending up with bad update?

I’m not sure what kind of wallet you are referring to, but I can share my experience with Electrum.

I haven’t updated mine for many years already, and honestly I can’t even remember the last time I did. I became more careful after reading about someone who lost funds because malware changed the address they pasted, so the coins were sent to the hacker instead. Because of that, I started thinking that maybe keeping the old version is safer than updating. But at the same time, I’m not sure if that is really the right thing to do, since old versions may also have security risks.

For now I still feel safer using the version I already know, but anyone more experienced with Electrum can correct me here.

Ideally I will suggest as soon as we receive the prompt for an update and this will depend on the hardware brand we are using, some comes in within 2 Weeks to one month interval notice for an update, but when there is a Security challenge or bridge, it is better you make the update as soon as possible.

Also ensure that you have your security keys (seed phrase) with you before doing this.

Don't rush to update your hardware wallet instantly because updates can be buggy or unstable.

There are some upgrade that require quick attention an upgrade, some version updates are released for some security patches which is for your own safety, it's not all the time when an updated version is released it does contain bugs as update.

Quote
My question now is how long should one wait before updating their hardware wallet to the latest firmware?
How long is protective enough in your book to avoid ending up with bad update?

This depend on the kind of software you are using and what the release versions says. If it's one that warrant an update, you should do it and if it's not something that is of concern, you can skip it.

Like Bitcoin core for example, look at what the release note says about Bitcoin core 31.0

v31.0 Release Notes

Bitcoin Core version 31.0 is now available.

With the release of this new major version, versions 28.x and
older are at "End of Life" and will no longer receive updates.

With this, the developers can release update from version 29-31 versions, any version below 29 will not receive an update anymore. So, when you see a maintenence release about versions 29.x that has never been released before, it shouldn't surprised you.

He's being particular about hardware wallet.

You can't update the hardware itself. He is talking about the firmware which is the software for hardware wallets. Each hardware wallet has their firmware and they get updated time to time and some wallets software like Electrum and Sparrow can work with your hardware wallets too.

One month is like enough in my opinion of any bugs or issues from a new firmware are reported by user community, developer community and the hardware company to fix them.

In addition, if you are not too actively with using your hardware wallets for transactions, you don't have to be too hurry with firmware updating.

There are something to be careful during firmware updating too.

However, the firmware update process itself introduces a moment of elevated risk.

The relationship between firmware updates and your seed phrase is straightforward but critically important: a firmware update should never affect your stored seed or require you to re-enter your recovery phrase. We explore this in detail in our article on Bitcoin seed phrase management. If a device ever requests your seed phrase during a firmware update, this is a major red flag that something is wrong.

In addition, as always recommended, make sure you have your wallet backups before doing anything.

Am always scared or rather adamant to update my firmware both when it comes to hardware wallet or exchange I use because anything can happen, so I always exercise a bit of patience until I begin to notice why it is necessary to do so.

It's good to wait 2-4weeks at least before applying any non critical firmware updates as a rule of thumb, there's no need to be in a hurry even if a message pops up to update like it always does whenever I try using my exchange to trade.

Yea this non critical part it the key distinction, I will say that waiting for a few weeks to see if others are going to report issue it a great thing to do if only the release notes being mention are minor improvement or a new features. But also to know that delaying for a long time might expose wallet to some risk, if in the case that the update fixes a very serious security vulnerability. So weather it for you to update immediately or to wait, there is a need for you to read the release notes. Regardless ones recovery seed should be safely backed up first before any firmware update.

It depends.. Frimwre or any other major releases(not necessarily firmware now) do come with a note documenting what the release is all about .

It can  be about fixing a bug, vulnerability, new features including security, and so on .. Your duty is to find and read the note or make further research on why there’s a need for the update.

After, you’re satisfied with your research  then you can finally decide to upgrade..
Sometimes, it could be an urgent one fixing a vunerability, so it’s always advisable to stay  active  and take necessary actions on all updates.

Honestly the approach I take is rather simple, unless there is a particular bug fix that affects me or maybe a new feature I’m particularly interested in, I usually wait for early adopters to report problem, manufacturers fix issues and generally when the update is deemed usable by the community. If it only adds a feature I don’t need, I’m comfortable waiting and watching community feeback.
A quick reminder to always Verify you are downloading the update from the official site and making sure your recovery seed has been properly backed up and tested before you proceed to update.

Read their upgrade note, see if there is latest security patch that you don't have. Buggy firmware is better than being vulnerable against exploit.

You can wait few days or more if there's not any meaningful security patch and ask from your peer, the same people who used the same hardware wallet but already upgraded about how the update went.

There is no fixed answer to "how long" until you decide to update to the latest firmware because every hardware wallet don't have the same scheduled update.

For example, Trezor is doing firmware update more frequently than Ledger.

What matters is to keep on watch for the latest security exploit and patch it as soon as possible.

Hardware wallet usually have lesser attack surface, you don't need to be in hurry.

OP you are one of those people who likes to update their devices without reading what the update is all about, updated firmware don't just happen without the Devs saying something about what the update will fix or bring, if there was a big the update could be a fix, sometimes it can be about new security introduction, sometimes it can be a new introduction to addiction Blockchain supports, let it be an habit to always take your time to read what the update is all about, this is what will determine if you must instantly update your hardware or you can take your time and avoid the update for some months later.
