Its not bad to gamble, it is just that you should be that making yourself that responsible. Actually we dont really know on what others people been dealing with even if he/she looks decent but it doesnt mean that they arent that dealing into something which is already that putting them in harm. As long as the family can still help, I believe someone whose life has been ruined by online gambling can still recover because family is the closest people who can help fix that situation. Besides family support, internet access these days has almost no limit so parents watching over their kids can become weaker without them even knowing. I've said it before, and I will say it again. GAMBLING IS JUST A TOOL. The results depends on how he approach and thinks gambling, and in this case, it's those bad decisions that put him into a spot where he's life became miserable. He borrowed money to many people, and used to gamble then he got addicted into it and he didn't stop earlier, and he only stopped when he got indebted into too many people that it came to a point where it's haunting him already.

There is no ultimate solution, it's all a matter of personal choice and the reaction of the community if it sees something bad happening. Anyone can be helped to get rid of addiction, it's just a matter of how much someone cares about being helped and is willing to publicly say they need help.

I think you make a good point. Personal discipline and emotional control are probably the biggest factors. I think that as long as someone sets clear limits, actually sticks to them, doesn't try to win back their losses, and treats gambling as entertainment rather than a source of income, the chances of developing a gambling addiction are much lower.
But at the same time, I don't think it's fair to put everything down to willpower and discipline alone. Gambling is deliberately designed to keep people engaged.   
So, in my opinion, gambling addiction usually isn't caused by just one factor. It develops through a combination of a person's own traits and the environment they're gambling in.
