Some point to note
1. Funds do not go to individuals.
2. The funds are supposed to be used for public awareness campaigns, outreach work, and targeted support for families affected by someone else’s gambling.
3. Funds will be given to organizations with track record of accountability and transparency.

If the groups and enterprises that are qualified to apply for this fund will put the money into the actual purpose it was meant for, I think it will go a long way to help reduce gambling addiction. A £1.4m fund has been launched to support community-led schemes
Community groups, charities and social enterprises across Wales can apply for grants of up to £75,000 a year to help tackle gambling addiction and debt.

Public Health Wales (PHW) and the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) have launched a £1.4 million fund to support local, community-led initiatives over the next two years.

Applications open on Monday August 31, with money available for public awareness campaigns, outreach work, and targeted support for families affected by someone else’s gambling.

Funding will prioritize projects working with high-risk groups, including residents facing financial hardship and those in the criminal justice system.

Helen Erswell, consultant in public health at PHW, said the fund aims to support “organisations closest to those most affected” to deliver early intervention work.

I mean it’s great that some governments have taken serious measures to help their citizens who are addicted to this level. If someone is trying to gamble their way into a hole just to possibly have some sort of financial assistance (that is not guaranteed btw) then that is pretty sad. They should put a lie detector test as part of the requirements or something to make sure there are no motives behind just trying to get financial assistance.

If this initiative is rather recent there in Wales, then it will take some time before we can see some scientist actually picking up those programs in order to conduct their own researches and see how effective they are to tackle consequences of gaming addiction in those communities within the United Kingdom.

Studies and papers on specific social programs actually take several months of years before they can publish results.

As someone who has dealt with papers, I can tell you it is a time consuming process, but is worth it, for the sake of science...

But this isnt really like an invention. Its more of a solution to a problem, and of course we still dont know yet if it will actually be effective.

Even if its a grant, it still has a purpose. And if they want to measure whether that purpose was achieved, there should be numbers or some kind of results to show it. Im pretty sure the organizations that receive the grant also have requirements to follow and will need to report whether they actually reached their goals.

For now, what we mostly know is the plan. The actual results are not out yet or have not been made public.

In my country Those who are addicted to gambling are those who don’t have a good source of income, and they depend on gambling to become rich.
Our government does not provide employment and since they don’t provide employment, people don’t have way to make money so they focus on gambling.
If my government should provide employment for its citizens those who are addicted will stop gambling.
So there government should provide jobs for their citizens, it will reduce addiction.

One of the reasons why people get addicted to gambling is because they are trying to make money from it, if the government provides very good jobs for its citizens to make money I don’t think they are going to be gambling to make money anymore, they will only gamble to have fun.

That is not a guarantee. For instance, Australia is a developed country and [1]its unemployment rate is relatively low, but [2] gambling addiction and gambling harm are still a problem there. So I dont think we can simply blame the government whenever people become addicted to gambling.

At the end of the day, gamblers also have control over their own actions. If someone keeps gambling until it becomes an addiction, personal responsibility is still part of it.

Its a little different in countries with high poverty and unemployment, because some people may become more vulnerable when they have no jobs and gambling becomes one of the few things they turn to for entertainment or the hope of making money.

This is the dumbest idea i have ever seen in my life. No people are being stupid enough to be addicted just because they wanna get support money. They're all want the jackpot, and not to be addicted that will make them lose everything.

The regulators are actively monitoring this problem. So it's not gonna happen.

This is a very big golden opportunity that gamblers would want to exploit so they can be qualified for the sharing of the money when it will be disbursed but to me I think it's not really a good idea because they will make more people venture into gambling in other to meet up the requirements for the money.

It will create more rooms for addiction too so this idea doesn't seat down well with me because if the Wales government wants to help their citizens they should just go ahead and empower them then setting aside some amount of money for gamblers and you must first be a gambler before getting access or even being a beneficiary to the money, it's not encouraging to me and like I have said it will create room for gamblers to become more addicted to gambling rather than solving the problem of addiction and making them loose the little money they already have.

People get addicted to gambling even when they won't receive incentives, but now that Wale has come up with the idea to raise $1.4 million to help gamblers who are addicted to gambling overcome their addiction, I think some gamblers are going to get addicted purposely in order for them to apply for the grant and get a share of the $1.4 million, which is $75,000 per each gambler who qualified for the grant.

Because their government has already announced the launch of the program. I think they have determined the assessment and oversight system for the distribution and use of funds. Programs like this are indeed prone to corruption, everything will depend on how the government conducts supervision.
I'm not sure it will be easy, but maybe it can be tested in a smaller area that indeed has a higher case of gambling addiction.

Honestly, some gamblers will deliberately abuse this Wale initiative because all generous things usually get abused by victims and none victims. What I'm literally saying right now is that most people who are not even gamblers will intentionally borrow money to gamble so that they will become addicted to gambling so that they can be able to apply for the Wale grant.

Actually, Wale literally had good intentions to help out their citizens who are suffering from gambling addiction, but to me I believe that this won't last long because it's obvious that when gamblers and none gamblers begin to abuse it, $1.5M won't even be enough to support.

It's a good start and it sounds like a lot, but I wonder how easily it can be burned through and where the money will really be targeted. If someone has to fight hard for £75,000 (max) worth of funding for a single year - will they bother to set up any structures that will last and will they have a guaranteed future. I'm thinking of someone who might take a salary, but also rent out a community space to create support groups for people with gambling issues, are they going to get multi year funding or will the whole thing fizzle out after 1 year? People who are putting in a lot of time to setting a support group up do not want the stress of having no money the year after. It definitely needs more explanation on how it'll be best spent.

Usually this is not something that would take time or even have to cause any issues or confusion amongst the individuals that would be involved or benefits from that particular money.
To me, I just hope they deployed a better strategy that would be use to share such funds to beneficiaries or to those that could be likely affected. If government or countries that are in the western world could do this then it would help relief addiction or even have to eradicate addiction entirely.

The initiative will have to be well managed if they want to sustain it on a long term a bad avoid people from selfish use of it. I think there should be some certain rules placed to govern how they distribute help to people. Not everyone should be eligible to this because they might not even know how many number of addicted gamblers are residing in their country. How do they tell real addictions from a pretence? It would be difficult at some point because I've seen this before happen in real life not gambling. A fund was allocated to help those In need, but people exploited it for themselves and the funds never got to those who truly needed the help. So it might not be different from what will happen here..

Well, I would not go as far as saying this is the solution to a problem. Because I personally believe that a solution to problem gambling would consist on educating gamblers and potential gamblers, so they have very low chances to become addicted gamblers in the long term.

This program is is about tackling the root of the problems l, but rather relieve people who suffer from the consequences of such problem.

Though, I don't have doubts there are other programs in the United Kingdom which actually seek to rehabilitate gamblers and not just help their families with a millionaire fund.

Its important the fund not only goes to the right places but also that it actually works.  The funding is quite small it should only be the start of what treatment is required for those most effected.  Most of us don't suffer the worst extremes but some without doubt absolutely require this help to get past gambling and carry on with their lives.  The industry as a whole has a good concern with the best use of funds in justification of its continuation as free enterprise in that economy and within those communities.
