A £1.4m fund has been launched to support community-led schemes
Community groups, charities and social enterprises across Wales can apply for grants of up to £75,000 a year to help tackle gambling addiction and debt.

Public Health Wales (PHW) and the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) have launched a £1.4 million fund to support local, community-led initiatives over the next two years.

Applications open on Monday August 31, with money available for public awareness campaigns, outreach work, and targeted support for families affected by someone else’s gambling.

Funding will prioritize projects working with high-risk groups, including residents facing financial hardship and those in the criminal justice system.

Helen Erswell, consultant in public health at PHW, said the fund aims to support “organisations closest to those most affected” to deliver early intervention work.

Some people will want to abuse this, but I think it will be hard to abuse. No one wants to be addicted to gambling at all. I do not think the money that will be given to the affected family will be worth getting addicted to gambling for.

If other countries can begin something like this, it will be good. But it should be in a way that the money will not be embezzled and also the family having the issue should not be given up to or more than the money lost to gambling.

Losing money to gamble can be on the gambling sites history and can be confirmed by the people responsible in distributing the money.

If there is no follow up to this, an addicted gambler will most likely put this money into gambling again in hope to double the money more and can still lose it all. Anyone that’s already addicted needs to be watched carefully, they’re the least of people to entrust money to, they’ll misuse and gamble with it again. Most gamblers are already in debts and this money can help them to recover from those debts if used judiciously. This is a great initiative and I hope it is implemented the best way to benefit all those that really needs it.

I say Public Health Wales and the Wales Council for Voluntary Action should require receipts or whatever proof that it was used for a good purpose. If not, they can either get the funds back, or if it was spent, they will pay it back at a certain time, or else it will be jail time.
Let's face it, this is also prone to abuse due to a corrupted system of the world. Actually, it has become human nature nowadays. That is why a system is required so that they cannot take advantage of it. This way, those who are planning to abuse them will back out, and those who are really trying to help will be the ones who will pursue the money since it will really be used for good.

Here, govt is not directly giving money to gamblers. Government is giving money to various charities and social organization. So, govt should choose them carefully. As a result they will be able to play role in raising awareness. They will also be able to provide counseling and stand by the affected families in root level where govt cant reach.

I know some people may want to try all means to get the fund, but if the charities given the money make simple investigation, they can easily know if someone qualifies or not. But I do not know how it would be done, but exploitations can be avoided and it should even be punishable, although they may not make it punishable.

I also think so. Another thing is that if someone is addicted to gambling and lost $10000, there is no probability that the person will be given up to the amount of money lost.

These are what should be put first, but in all countries that gambling is allowed and even in countries that gambling is not allowed but people are gambling, some people are addicted to gambling and it is somewhat many people.

They must have some sort of safeguard against abuse, because some people might try to create their own "volunteer group" with the interest of applying for the grant. IMO only registered organizations prior to the launch of their program should be eligible, and there should also be close monitoring on how the funds are going to be spent.

I did not read the entire article, but I do not think the players are going to become addicted on purpose because these funds would not be paid directly to gamblers, it makes much more sense for them to be allocated to qualified organizations such as charities, community groups, social enterprises and volunteer organizations that work directly to help people to prevent a gambling addiction.

I do not know how this fund is managed or how the spending is monitored on Wales, but if it were in Brazil I would support it as long as there were clear requirements imposed on the organizations receiving the money, for example: they should be required to send the names of the beneficiaries (to government, and for the public only the number of beneficiaries), the amounts money received, the objectives of each project, the money spent yet, and others. This information should be public, because it is public money too.
Than... the funding could be released on stages, based on whether the organizations meet their goals, the number of people that they help and other measurable results.
I would also reserve part of the funds to finance independent auditing organizations, whose job would be to monitor those entities and verify that the money is being used properly.

To me this is not a welcome development, rather it will increase gambling addiction. It's just another way of telling people to get addicted or continue gambling so that when your case become worst you can come and apply for grants. These funds are not given directly to gambling addicts. NGOs, Community groups, and charities will manage the funds and give the needed assistance to these gambling addicts. These charities and other organisations should be scrutinised before they are approved to be part of the project. Fraudulent individuals might want to take advantage of it, but having a strong checks and supervision systems is essential. Wales is not as corrupt as some countries; hence, I think this noble initiative will achieve its goals.

It's possible to be abused but there's little details that we've seen and I don't think that the government of Wales is too dumb to allow that to happen. There will be standards and metrics to see who are the eligible ones. There will be a background check before admitting someone to the program. That's why it's not a free money for those who will be eligible to get into this program. Maybe thinking that they're just going to give away that grant of up to 75k euros or so won't be that easy and, there are possible penalties or punishment if someone get caught abusing it.

This is a welcome development and I think it be helpful especially for those that have been struggling with it for years without no way out. However, things like this is rare in my country,  perhaps if you can't help yourself then that's just your own business.

That said, speaking on people's getting addicted all by themselves just to be a partaker of the financial benefits is absolutely impossible, unless they might just be faking it which is not possible. Because no normal person will want to intentionally jeopardize his life for some kinda financial gains or something.

75 thousand pounds per year isn't such a big amount and I'm sure that the government will pay close attention to those community groups and how they are spending the funds. Is it really that easy for someone to just find 10 gambling addicts in Wales, create such community group and apply for the funding only to steal it? This seems like too much effort for a too little "prize". Anyway, this is a pretty good initiative and more countries should follow, because gambling addiction treatment is expensive and almost all gambling addicts are flat broke. Of course many people would say that preventing gambling addiction before it occurs is a way better method than spending money on psychological support and medication for gambling addicts. I agree with this, but we also need support for the people, who are struggling with addiction right now.

I dont think that someone is that stupid to become gambling addicted on purpose. I dont know how addicted can benefit directly from fund. But I think some smart ass might organize business, such as gambling addicted centers, focus groups, and as if run treatment. Receive funding but IRL run fake business. Imitate that he help. Make fake reports about number of gamblers helped or real visitors.

All the government can do is channel the money into the right charities and groups that are responsible for correcting addiction in the state, if there will be some abuse it will be from this group/organizers, in my country right now this is one of the problems we are facing.
