I recently came across an article where OpenAI disrupted a Poipet Scam Network that was using artificial intelligence to scam people.

Where they used artificial intelligence to operate various types of cryptocurrency investments and other fraudulent operations. Although OpenAI has now banned that specific network, will they actually be able to stop those scammers in Cambodia or all over the world?

I'm actually worried that as artificial intelligence gets more powerful, fraudsters are also getting stronger, and if we talk about hacking, are hackers also getting stronger than before? Has the vulnerability in Coldcard's firmware been identified by any of the latest AI?

If there is no AI, there will still be hackers and scammers, but AI can make the work easier for the hackers and scammers just as it is making work easier for people that need it generally.

Hackers and scammers always have different tools that can make their bad works effected, and AI is part of it since few years ago, but getting more rampant.

Everything that has advantage has an equal disadvantage. AI was intended to make work easier and simpler, but bad actors are leveraging on it to enhance their bad practices. This is not a problem with AI, but those that use it negatively. Digital products need to upgrade their security architecture because more is to come. Scammers are still building larger scale scam architectures, and let's not even think its the average scammers that pull this bigger threats.
Those who have the ability to pull off scams like ColdCard hack are well established scammers with insider information, so it's becoming obvious some big players in the crypto world have a hand in the recent hacks going on.

The vulnerability in the firmware has been detected, it doesn't need AI to do it. It's an error in the firmware integration. In the RNG generation, seeds were generated with PRNG instead of the proper hardware RNG and this allowed scammers to reconstruct the private keys offline and steal funds.

AI is making many people’s work easier, so easy that sometimes some of these people are not necessary anymore, but that’s another issue.

Anyway, I agree with the title of this thread, but apart from making traditional crypto scammers and hackers stronger, it also empowers people with little knowledge and very few scruples.

Oh, and just to point out: the article is not about crypto scams in particular:

Quote
"The operation illustrates an important reality about modern scam networks: organized criminal groups rarely restrict themselves to a single type of scam," OpenAI said. "Instead, they opportunistically employ whatever narratives, personas, and tactics they think will be most effective to deceive victims."

AI is helpful, it just depends on how people use it.

The world is advancing because of technologies like AI, so if we dont adapt to the changes, thats when we become more vulnerable. We may get older, but our knowledge should still be updated. Not because we only want to follow the trend, but because it can help keep us safe and avoid scams.

With the number of scams we are seeing now, it seems the government cannot completely stop or greatly reduce them. So for me, education is still one of the best ways to protect ourselves.

Just as how engineers can build softwares that should have taken several months in just a month using AI, the opposition parties can also break those softwares within a lesser period of  time it should have taken normally for them to break things without  the help of AI,all thanks to AI.

The whole coldcard thing is a close assumption , not an affirmation that AI detected it truly but AI is capable anyway.

Although OpenAI has now banned that specific network, will they actually be able to stop those scammers in Cambodia or all over the world?

No, they can run LLM locally and also find a way to connect to Internet whenever they need to without compromising their identities
