I have Electrum wallet that I run on Tails OS and I use it for cold storage.

When I started using it, I generated a large number of receiving addresses so I can receive every transaction on new address (mostly for privacy reasons and also not to "taint" all coins if I receive some "tainted" satoshi).

At one point I even received warning that at some point addresses will have to be inserted in Electrum manually because I generated too many addresses. I disregarded that warning and continued to generate new addresses.

After that I used some addresses so part of these addresses are populated with coins and some are empty. I also repeated proccess of generating addresses a few times when I ran out of receiving addresses (I tend to use one address only once if situation allows that).

Today, I ran Tails with Electrum again to check full balance, but the full balance is not there.

I tried to change settings in Electrum, but I can not get it to show full balance.
I think that is because I generated too many empty addresses and it can not get all the balances.

I have list of all the addresses that I generated previously but I can't find the option to insert address individually into Electrum.

Anyone had the same issue before?

The default gap limit in electrum is 20. This means that Electrum checks addresses until it reaches 20 consecutive unused addresses.
Since you said you have too many empty addresses, some of your used addresses are probably beyond the gap limit.

To increase the gap limit, you need to use the following command in Console.

Code:
wallet.change_gap_limit(50)
This command increases the gap limit to 50. You can change the 50 to any other number you want.

Hope you did not generate bitcoin addresses above the default gap limit?

You can check the gap limit with this command:

Code:
wallet.gap_limit

You can check lists of your addresses. On the GUI, click on addresses.

You can use this command to increase your gap limit:
Code:
wallet.change_gap_limit(50)

You can edit the 50 to increase the addresses generated that you will see.

To import addresses on an online wallet, click on wallet -> create wallet -> name the wallet -> and click on import bitcoin addresses or private keys. It is a watch-only wallet, you can not spend from it unless you import the private keys, and they should be on wallet on the airgapped device if you want to import the private keys.

I’m confused on how you were tracking it before if your setup is cold.. were you using Electrum as a watch only wallet or you were just depositing continuously without checking the balance at all? Just curious..

Anyway, you can use the gap limit as mentioned above , increase it continuously till you get the full balance but I’m not sure how you’re tracking it before , so how will you know you have a correct balance?

Thanks, I tried to change gap limit. I tried with 50, 100, 1000 and even 5000 but it did not help. I closed and re-entered Electrum but it still shows same balance. Worst case scenario is that I fell victim to clipboard hijacker but I am pretty sure that I double checked the addresses when I saved them to my mobile phone.

I was depositing continuously and I just used blockchain explorer to check if deposit arrived.

I have list of all the addresses that I generated previously but I can't find the option to insert address individually into Electrum.

Anyone had the same issue before?

Many of these issues have been discussed here. Simply follow the steps for gap limits above. It is easier if you know the total number of addresses previously generated on that wallet so you can know the number to insert in the gap limit.

You can actually import your addresses into electrum wallet, same way you recovered your wallet through seed phrases, you just use the option “import bitcoin addresses or private keys” and then list all the addresses one per line without adding any character or space after each addresses.

Not address import gives you a watch only wallet which you can not directly spend from although you can generate an unsigned transaction from watch only wallet but that wallet too has to be recovered by a public key and not addresses

Thanks, I tried to change gap limit. I tried with 50, 100, 1000 and even 5000 but it did not help. I closed and re-entered Electrum but it still shows same balance. Import those addresses first to see if they still have those coins on it. That’s only way to be sure that they still have those bitcoin

You can go through your transaction history to know your transactions and know if there are transaction that you did not make. Have you done that or you are only guessing that you fell victim of a clipboard malware?

The transaction history starts at June / 2026 and I generated this wallet back in 2025.

There are only receiving transactions in history, but I fear is that maybe malicious software changed the addresses that I have stored in my cell phone. The good thing is that I checked the addresses that are stored in my cell phone and the funds still sit there. I guess if someone has stolen the funds they would sent them in mixer or exchange.

BTW is there a way to verify if the address is generated from my original seed? I tried to used wallet.is_mine() function but if I understood correctly it just checks the addresses that are already in Electrums list, and doesn't check the adresses that out of gap limit.

I have bunch of receiving addresses and I would like to re-ceck if they are original addresses generated by my Electrum.wallet or if they wered changed or replaced in meantime.

Right now the gap limit is 5000 (I generated way less than 5000 addresses, maybe 100 or 200), I opened and closed Electrum and still the balance is the same.

Yes, that command checks whether the address is among the generated addresses. It's basically like going to "Addresses" tab and searching for the address there.
Did you go to "Addresses" tab and check whether more addresses have been generated? I am suggesting this, so that you can make sure the wallet.change_gap_limit has worked properly.

Use this command:

Code:
ismine("input the address here")

It can be used to know if a bitcoin address is generated from the seed on Electrum wallet.

BTW is there a way to verify if the address is generated from my original seed? I tried to used wallet.is_mine() function but if I understood correctly it just checks the addresses that are already in Electrums list, and doesn't check the adresses that out of gap limit.

I checked and no new addresses have been generated, also in meantime I imported all the addresses thst I have on the list and all the funds are still there, there is no outgoing transactions...

BTW is there a way to verify if the address is generated from my original seed?
Use this command:

Code:
ismine("input the address here")

It can be used to know if a bitcoin address is generated from the seed on Electrum wallet.

I tried to use that function but it just checks if the address is on the "Address" list. It doesn't check the addresses omitted because small gap limit.

Tails is supposed to be offline because you're using it for cold storage. If you connect it to the internet, you may encounter an issue where Electrum refuses to connect to available servers.

Have you tried taking the master public key instead and use a Windows OS to make a watch-only wallet and try to increase the gap limit just like mentioned above?
Let it sync because it would take a long time if you generated a massive amount of addresses. Until you found the address you were looking for.

If the address you're looking for is much deeper, Electrum can't handle high gap limit. I heard that 5000+ could freeze Electrum UI. So only try below 4000+.

Just update, Electrum managed to pull off 5000 address gap limit and after some time I was away from computer a huge list of empty addresses popped up in Address section. I don't know where they came from because I am sure I didn't generated that many addresses. I just don't have any clue how they are generated. BTC balance is still small and it seems 5000 gap limit is not enough.

So now I am unable to access my funds because there are bunch of addresses generated out of nowhere.

If You have the addresses written down and you checked that there are still coins on it then you should manually check all the addresses that are on the seed recovered wallets after you increase the gap limit, I think you might find them.

But if they are not in those addresses then either two things have happened

1. You still need to increase the gap limit because they are not within the current limit. This though is highly unlikely since you said you didn’t generate the addresses up to the current gap limit you’re using.

2. This address either do not belong to this seed phrase, or derivation path problem might be what is making them not recovered. This is what I think is likely the problem

Now I am trying to increase gap limit to 10000, as there are bunch of empty addresses shown. But as BitMaxz said Electrum probably can't handle that many addressess.

I will try to set up watch only wallet on my cell phone and see if it will show any differences, but I doubt that.

Now the questions are
1. How does Electrum has that many addresses
2. Are receiving addresses on my cell phone really the addresses generated by my original.electrum
3. How to recover full balance that won't show up because I have too many addresses...

1. How does Electrum has that many addresses
That is how bitcoin HD wallets are.

2. Are receiving addresses on my cell phone really the addresses generated by my original.electrum
Yes.

3. How to recover full balance that won't show up because I have too many addresses...
I do not think you generated more than 5000 bitcoin addresses before. If you did not see the coins there, probably you sent some coins to wrong addresses.

I remember when I generated 50000 addresses on Electrum, I wished I had not done so because the wallet will load until it will crash. It was an update that solved the issue and I did not bother checking the wallet again with the so much addresses.

I was depositing continuously and I just used blockchain explorer to check if deposit arrived.
Ohh.. I get it now.
In some of your comment you mentioned that you have no outgoing txns.. so has it been resolved now ?
You shouldn’t have upto 5000 address anyway and the entire balance should have shown up.

If isssue still persist, try this:
Locate the last transaction and copy the addres.. goto the console tab and type ;
Code:
wallet.get_address_index("the last txn address you copied ")
That should give you the index as the second value , copy it and extend the gap limit upto the index you copied.

Unfortunately it isn't solved yet, what I did last I put a gap of 10000 addresses and it didn’t work... Now I try with100000 and see what will happen. Wallet is synchronising and it will take some time. I don't know how it happened that I have so large gap in addresses.

If isssue still persist, try this:
Locate the last transaction and copy the addres.. goto the console tab and type ;
Code:
wallet.get_address_index("the last txn address you copied ")

Thank you for suggestion, I'll try that next if the issue won't resolve in current step.

Edit. 100000 gap limit didn't work, still displaying small balance. I tried with address index command and it gives me output "(0, 24)"
