The controversial L2 scaling solution has been years in the making, yet it has suffered from lack of mainstream adoption. At the time of this writing, there are many merchants and/or services that still don't support LN payments. For something that promises ultra-low fees and blazing-fast transaction speeds, LN should've been accepted almost everywhere by now. Imagine going to your favorite coffee shop or restaurant and paying with the LN like a breeze.
While the LN does have its benefits, it isn't the perfect solution. There are many flaws that need to be addressed. Especially in terms of UX, and high centralization risks.
What do you think? Is there still a future for the LN? Or is it game over? Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you ask me I won’t say it’s a game over for lightning, but I also don’t think we should expect it to become the universal payment method anytime soon. The biggest challenge with the LN is not really with the speed or fee. Obviously those are already impressive. The challenge is the UX. most normal users don’t want to understand channels, liquidity, routing, backup, or why payment suddenly failed. If paying with bitcoin requires understanding all of that, mainstream adoption will always be difficult. Centralization is also a valid concern, lightning isn’t inherently centralized, but there are more incentives for liquidity and routing to concentrate around larger, well connected nodes. That’s something the ecosystem need to keep watching carefully.
IMO, lightning still has a future, especially for small and frequent payments where putting everything on-chain doesn’t make sense. But it success will depend on whether the developer can hide most of the complexity from the user while still preserving bitcoin’s self custody and permissionless nature. If that can be solved then it’s worth not writing LN off yet.

It’s not that every merchant need to run their own Lightning node to make LN payment success. Look at this, Square is integrating Bitcoin payment at much larger scale for eligible merchant, where merchant don't need to manage Lightning infrastructure themselves. That mean a portion of adoption is happening on backend, which is invisible to the user. But I get your main point. Hmm, Lightning's UX is still not as simple as Bitcoin on-chain. In my opinion, Lightning definitely has some future, but its future may not be a model where everyone has to run their own node and every store need to accept LN directly. Such complexity can be hidden from user through infrastructure of wallet, exchange, payment processor and application.

LN could still work. Imo, the hurdles are the underlying UX and lack of enough integrations across the board. If users know the benefits of LN and they know that they can access those benefits directly on any app they're using to send or receive Bitcoin, they can start utilising it. Look at Segwit, most people know the benefits and it's supported on like 90%+ of service providers from wallets to exchanges. But it's not the same as LN.

I guess you brought up this discussion because the Bitcoin network fee is very cheap at the moment. You want to know how important LN is? Wait until the mempool is clogged, and then we can have this discussion. LN usage may not be as popular as you expected, but that does not mean it's not serving its purpose or it has no future.

Great point, lightning use to become much more valuable when mempool becomes congested and when on-chain fees rises. I would really say that the judging of LN by how popular it is today it one of the biggest mistakes, it values is to give Bitcoin an option for a frequent small payment, without having to go put each transaction direct on base layer. Also liquidity issues and UX needs to be improved, all this aren't the reasons for lightning development it not a reason to write it off .

Merchants are being offered alternative networks (coins) that also provide low fees and simple setup, along with off-ramp capabilities; so it makes sense that the LN is not a priority, given that most business needs do not strictly require a long-term store of value. However, the Lightning Network will have a future of its own, for instance, in serving businesses that do not require rapid capital turnover.

Hmm, many merchant still do not support LN, because it is difficult for ordinary user to understand channel, routing, etc. Square is integrating Bitcoin payment at much larger scale for eligible merchant, where merchant don't need to manage Lightning infrastructure themselves. That mean a portion of adoption is happening on backend, which is invisible to the user.
Not only Square, Lightning Labs is also creating tooling that makes it easy for developer to integrate self custodial Bitcoin payment without having to manage Lightning infrastructure themselve. The UX is gradually becoming easier. Merchants no longer have to run node themselves. Users just scan the QR and pay, and the rest is done on backend. https://lightning.engineering/posts/2026-07-21-wavelength-launchAfaik, LN's public capacity is around 5000 BTC now, and the monthly volume has risen to over $1 billion. Actually, LN doesn't seem urgent because on-chain fees are low now. Let a few more years pass, and the real value of LN will be seen only when the mempool is jammed. Especially for small and frequent payments.

There are no perfect things in life and it's true in blockchain industry, with Bitcoin blockchain either layer 1 or layer 2. There are developments of many Bitcoin layer 2 projects so far and even Bitcoin blockchain is biggest, strongest and most secure compares to altcoin blockchains, Bitcoin ecosystem is a biggest one in cryptocurrency market, failures of many altcoin layer 2 projects can signal many risks. It was never controversial, it is only that you and some other people let yourself be manipulated by frauds like Roger Ver to create controversy around something that is objectively the best solution around and the correct choice forward. Where was the controversy for Ethereum's L2s and other chains L2's or L3's? There wasn't really much any and all of those use centralized models so they have master keys, they came after the LN and are much worse because those chains do not care about decentralization and sovereignty. As you see there has not been any controversy about that, which should give you a hint that the issue is not with the solution but that people were manipulated into believing something was wrong with it. While the LN does have its benefits, it isn't the perfect solution. There are many flaws that need to be addressed. Especially in terms of UX, and high centralization risks.
What do you think? Is there still a future for the LN? Or is it game over? Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
This is also wrong, the UX has been solved. It seems you have not used LN recently using a mobile wallet, the UX can not be made better. The centralization risks were exaggerated and never materialized, and even if it were to become centralized as claimed there it would be still significantly more decentralized that L2s on other chains. This whole thread is weird because you are acting like Bitcoin or some coin has mainstream adoption. LN can't have what Bitcoin does not have either. You should focus on shifting the responsibility on those that are responsibility, wallet makers and infrastructure creators. The issue is not with LN at all, like it was not with bech32 which took many years to get adopted which was not necessary.

I don’t think it’s game over yet for LN, though there are underlying issues or concerns now with the UX, liquidity and centralisation which are actually true especially if the goal is to make bitcoin payments seem easy and fast. Even bitcoin took years to develop to what it is now, if developers can improve the User Experience so that you don’t have to understand channels, routing or liquidity just to send and receive bitcoin, it’ll greatly improve the adoption. The technicality of it is the only or biggest shortcoming, because the fundamental need which it is trying to solve is still very much valid.

There are no such issues, you just repeated information that was found in the first post and the top topic. Since LN is designed for small payments, there are no issues of liquidity at all. If someone wants to use LN for very large payments which it was not intended for, then there can be liquidity issues but that is the responsibility of the user and not the network. The UX topic has been solved for years, the mobile wallets are amazing and many have better UX than normal layer 1 wallets. Centralization is also not any kind of concern in practice and it does not impact any kind of user right now. Even bitcoin took years to develop to what it is now, if developers can improve the User Experience so that you don’t have to understand channels, routing or liquidity just to send and receive bitcoin, it’ll greatly improve the adoption.
This is already the case, it seems that you are commenting on lightning without actually using it. I have installed LN wallet for many friends and used it to make payments with merchants and restaurants, there are no issues and they have no idea about channel management at all. The technicality of it is the only or biggest shortcoming, because the fundamental need which it is trying to solve is still very much valid.
There is no such need. Most users do not understand Bitcoin's technical side, so they don't need to understand the technical side of the lightning network. Wallets that have great UX have abstracted that away, the information can only be found under advanced settings for users that want or need it. I have never had an issue in the last few years that has required me to access such information. Also channels are very easy to understand, besides that there is no need to understand anything at all to use it.

I have been thinking about a solution like a delegated Lightning network where you have competing LPs and the wallet upon download automatically connects with several LPs. There should be competition between regarding liquidity, uptime, fees, routing success etc. As soon as the user has to put in effort, I think it is too big of a UX barrier. It depends of course, but talking about the smaller merchants around the corner, it doesn't feel right for them. But it should still be non-custodial and the user can choose a provider of Lightning infrastructure, or just go with the best rated or fastest or whatever else could be chosen.
It should actually be much more about automation, click and pay without having to worry. It should be somewhat similar to roaming, you buy a sim card and the infrastructure does the rest for you, you just choose the destination. And whatever is best for you, should receive and handle the request. I don't know what this would exactly look like, but it could be like having Bitcoin as L1 and then Lightning as L2 and then the competing infrastructure providers on L3 and the data regarding all the important details like available liquidity etc. should be pulled and processed in pretty much real time and the app should make the choice for you. It always depends on the amount you want to send, but all the small things like buying a coffee or maybe getting a haircut shouldn't require you to run a whole infrastructure yourself. That is what it feels like for those reading about LN for the first time.

In my opinion. It still needs work before it becomes a solution for most. If people need a lot of time and effort to understand even Layer 1 as in Bitcoin, you can not expect Second Layers like Lightning Network to progress and grow too fast. It is definitely not dead or dying. I rather think of it like Bitcoin in the early days when it was in my opinion at least a lot more complicated to use, store et cetera than generating Seeds, transferring from a Smart phone and punching Seeds in to steel washers.

The lighting network isn't dying from my knowledge. It is the best for me because it can be more liquid and more easily integrated into global finance. So it is basically evolving just as Bitcoin is doing over the years and while users of lightening network may have more issues with the UX, large companies or institutions see its advantages when it comes to fulfilling the need of making international or across border payment settlements.

It's game over. In fact, it's hard to figure out if the game ever even began. Lightning is a problem in search of a solution. Unless there's an existing connection between a transaction pair already on the network, and that channel is sufficiently funded, then the user of the network still has to do a full, on-chain Bitcoin transaction to trade, which means they have only wasted their time since they would have been better off without LN. And LN itself introduces all kinds of security problems, and, in general, does not do what actual Bitcoin does. On top of all of this, there are tons of solutions out there that are a thousand times better than LN in every way when it comes to fast and small transactions. Almost all Bitcoin transactions these days are "large" in that they are over $100 or even over $1000, and in these use cases the time and fee for using the real Bitcoin chain is perfectly acceptable, so there is no need for LN. LN, even with massive promotion by the Bitcoin community over the last 10 years, has failed to take off, and for very good reasons. Just used real Bitcoin (which LN is absolutely not) or use a fast stablecoin for small transactions and payments. There's no room in the market for LN and never has been.

Saying LN a problem in search of a solution is honestly reaching. Remember when ordinal spams were a thing? a transaction could cost hundred of dollars, that kind of thing could repeat in the future because they are some kind of meme. LN exist to solve that and just because the network fee has been getting low, it doesn't mean LN should be got rid of. If LN is as useless as you described, major exchanges like coinbase won't be using it to route Bitcoin withdrawals yet it's not only major exchanges that uses LN, even remittances and cross border payments services use it. Keep in mind that in 2025 15% of Coinbase transactions use LN because it's apparently genuinely useful. It clearly serves a purpose otherwise those big services would've deprecated LN withdrawal long time ago.

Lightning Network is designed for small to tiny transactions and people can use Coinbase for making their payments including small ones so with such payment purposes, it's feasible and money saving when they choose Bitcoin Lightning Network. Transactions through Lightning Network and it's very matched with small value transactions. Noone want to make their transactions on Bitcoin on chain for a cup of coffee for example, and if they have another option as Lightning Network, they will choose it that is quickly and cheaply. In addition, Coinbase has very good ecosystem for users to enjoy many products and features. https://www.coinbase.com/aboutThe most trusted crypto platform, Coinbase stores more digital assets than any other company and is building the everything exchange — one place to access crypto, equities, derivatives, prediction markets, and more.

Although some argue that the Lightning Network has failed, I disagree, the network is actually facing the same adoption hurdles that credit cards and the internet once encountered. In my opinion, there are currently two main obstacles "a UX that is still complicated" and "a lack of widespread merchant adoption". It's understandable that many coffee shops and restaurants still don't accept LN, as new technologies naturally take time to be adopted. Take credit cards for example, it took over a decade for them to become accepted at almost every store.
UX issues are often difficult for the average person to grasp; fortunately, some LN wallets have succeeded in making Bitcoin technology very easy for laypeople to use, without requiring them to understand the underlying technical complexities. However, it will still take time before the experience is truly as simple as using an e-wallet.The reason LN hasn't seen widespread adoption yet is the "chicken and egg" problem (merchants are waiting for users) and (users are waiting for merchants). However, the fact remains that LN is already being used for daily transactions within certain communities. This proves that the concept works. I am convinced that LN still has a future because its foundation is solid. If UX issues are resolved and on-chain fees become increasingly expensive, it is highly likely that people will switch to LN for small, everyday transactions.
