If we really observe the journey of Bitcoin over the decades, we’ll notice that Bitcoin is without doubt one of the strongest and most resilient asset in the investment market. It has survived several ups and downs, hack attempts, bans, criticisms, government regulations and restrictions, and countless predictions of its failure. But yet, I still believe there’s this one big problem that is I feel deserves more attention.

Even if we may say that Bitcoin is indeed for everyone (which may be true in somewhat way) but we can’t ignore the fact that Bitcoin may just be too difficult for the average person to use safely.

What do I mean by this?
Like we all know, Self custody happens to be one of the greatest strengths of Bitcoin, and in the same way, it is equally one of the biggest challenges.
Losing one’s seed phrase means permanent loss of access to one’s assets, just as sending to the wrong address can equally be irreversible. Sometimes, understanding the complexities associated with the in-depth and deep knowledge of Bitcoin, such as the Hardware wallets, transaction fees, network choices, backups, as well as security practices can be really complicated sometimes, not just for the newer users but equally for the experienced users (sometimes). And this is often the main reason why it can be quite easier for several people to run back to centralized exchanges, the very system that Bitcoin was initially created to combat, simply because decentralization has become quite difficult for them to understand and comprehend.

And this has really made me ponder on this very question which has been on my mind for some time.
Is it really possible for Bitcoin to really achieve mass adoption while still requiring users to take this much responsibility, or would mass adoption just be indirectly pushing users towards adopting the centralized system of storage?

And if eventually users adopting centralized exchanges finally becomes the order of the day simply because self custody has become too difficult for them to comprehend and navigate, would we really be solving Bitcoin’s problems or are we indirectly recreating the same problems that Bitcoin was meant to tackle?

And again, are there other weaknesses in Bitcoin that you also feel is often ignored?

The weakness you mentioned is completely a person's weakness, this weakness you mentioned is never a weakness of Bitcoin. For example, if you forget the way to your house, then it is completely your fault, but if you blame the government for this mistake, then it is not right at all. You have to do all the work of the wallet or move forward by gaining the right knowledge.

Bitcoin has no weakness, so it goes and I have never thought about the weakness of Bitcoin or seen anything that might seem like Bitcoin has weakness

Based on security, Bitcoin is never the problem, lose from Bitcoin is always from human error which is failure to use a secured wallet or trading within it, Bitcoin is the most secured digital currency to deal with but some people don't understand how to properly secure their coin. Even the coldcard hack is never the fault of Bitcoin's devs but from the devs of coldcard failure to identify a future threat to their platform. However people aresm seeking another alternative and have found a better option which is using a multi sig wallet.

It is true that it can be difficult for average person to use a self custody wallet but I don't think you keeping your coin on exchanges also solve the problem completely
Though you don't have to worry about losing your seed phrase but you will be trusting the exchange to keep your coin safe
Just so you know there have been recent reports of exchanges getting hacked, freezing accounts and even shutting down

So I think it's considering the risk each of them holds and see the one you're more comfortable with and also learn how to manage it

Since we know how Valuable Bitcoin is, I don't expect everyone to make that their Bitcoin is safe, we know that an average user might not find it so easy while making use of self custodian walllet but as someone who knows that how secure his Bitcoin is, will determine whether he will see himself as Bitcoiner or not, such person will be careful on how to secure his wallet by keeping his seed phrase safe, I will not advise anyone to keep their Bitcoin in an exchange, we can use them for p2p and any other minor transactions but as for hodling our bitcoin, that should not be option for us, I'm glad you have been able to list the risk that could be associated with that.

Self custody is a Bitcoin strength that comes with great responsibilities, and because of that, I see nothing wrong with you having the responsibility of having full control over your bitcoin being a problem that will affect its adoption in the future, because despite the fact that centralized exchanges seems to take the responsibility of protecting your Bitcoin, on the other hand, you do not have control over it. And if for example they exchange happens to shutdown or gets hacked, you literally would have lost all your Bitcoin. Hence, self custody will be Bitcoin's strength that will draw massive attention to it, and most especially by people who also intends to have full control over their money.

Newbie stage can make you see it as a challenge but once you subject yourself to adopt Bitcoin and store it in a self custody wallet, you will definitely realise the importance of self custody and you won't see it as a weakness or challenge of Bitcoin. This is not a weakness, you might be saying it based on the fact that some people will see it as a challenge for themselves but that's only when they are still new to the system, self custody is not difficult at all.

Even when I newly started, I felt the fear that someone can just go through my stuffs and find my phrase and steal by coins, but there's no way that would have happened unless I'm careless with keeping the phrase.

With what I understood, everything had weakness. And I can probably said that weakness of bitcoin is the volatile, is not full stable, the market always change, he doesn’t always work perfectly the way we all want it, and that make it perfect. What make some investors don’t realize believes that bitcoin have weakness is because of the decentralized, and know one always get control over it, and you will always get access to your funds that have all the secret codes or private key. When you understand how bitcoin works, you don’t have time of watching weakness of bitcoin, your goals is how to be getting profits in bitcoin.

I can say for sure that right now, Bitcoin has evolved or is evolving on a daily basis to be a hybrid economic system that can't really be ignored in the financial and monetary systems of any country or individual at the micro-level.

That being said, while the original goal for Bitcoin creation is to ensure neutrality and uncensorability, the scope of self soverignty on which it stands is to guarantee an alternative and go-to option when centralization fails.

What do I mean by this?
Like we all know, Self custody happens to be one of the greatest strengths of Bitcoin, and in the same way, it is equally one of the biggest challenges.
This is not Bitcoin weakness, it is weakness of the users who cannot protect their keys and security informations. If you sign up for self custody, you should be able to face the responsibility that comes with it instead of blaming the system itself for your carelessness.

I don't think you need to be a tech savy or have deep knowledge of bitcoin to be able to practice self custody, don't make it sound so complicated because its not. Just use open source, self custody wallet like electrum to get started.

Personally I think this are one of the biggest challenges that bitcoin is still having, self custody give you full access and control. But for you to be able to get his full access and control it will come with responsibility in the  sense that one needs to be careful with seed phrase, because a little mistake with transaction or your seed phrase cab lead to a serious consequences.

And if you check most things out, in other for Bitcoin to reach out to nations.  Security practices and also wallets needs to be so much easier for better understanding and not to remove user control, because if not all this users are going to prefer to exchange, why because they will see that to use Bitcoin safely it complicated or in that case exchanges are easier to operate

Exchanges are easier to control because you don’t want to be held responsible for the safety of your assets. People should stop seeing there as last resort because of what they think of a potential compromise of their wallets through negligence that leads to exposure of seed phrase and ultimately access to hack of their wallets by scammers. As long as you take the security of your wallet with maximum priority, you will never face any form of intrigue in your wallet. Just because you can lose your asset because of a single mistake of not keeping your seed phrase safe, that doesn’t mean that you should rely more on third party to help you and keep your funds. If you do so, you’ve just exposed yourself to more danger.
