I'm concerned about a recent happening where the EFCC froze Osun State account and the President BAT ordered the EFCC to unfreeze the account. The EFCC was established as an independent body that fights against financial crimes but from the recent act of the President shows that they are not independent as they are still controlled by the government.
Do you think that the government has the right to give them orders despite that they're an independent body? Your thoughts and opinion.

The Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) is only an independent body on news papers and on televisions, but in reality, the EFCC is a tool of the president and it's ruling party to intimidate other opposition parties in this our country. And this recent happening in Osun state is a clear proof to what I just said. Because we all know the main reason why the EFCC chose to freeze the account of the Osun State Government just the week before it's governorship election, if not to intimidate them and try to rig the election to their favour as they always do. And this was the main reason why many states governors all ran to APC, simply because they were all scared of being removed after their tenure elapses, but since governor Adeleke and his family chose to remain in an opposition party, that's why the ruling party is fighting them so that they can be in control over Osun state resources, which is very bad. Because this administration gave just succeeded in making the country a one party state.

They are very dependent on what the commander in chief instructs them to do. EFCC has always been a willing tool for political oppression. When the President says freeze, they freeze. When he says unfreeze, they unfreeze. That is not independence that's just following orders. Look at the case of Yahaya Bello, he has been accused of stealing billions from Kogi State's treasury during his time as governor and the EFCC has been going after him. But here is the thing!! He is still walking free and the APC even cleared him to run for Senate while his trial is ongoing . If the EFCC was truly independent, how does someone with that kind of case still get that kind of treatment. An independent body should go after anyone, no matter who they are. But the pattern is clear!! some people get pursued, others get protected. That is not fighting corruption. That is selective justice.

I didn't knew that the EFCC is independent until this very moment. Honestly,I'm just hearing this for the first time as a Nigerian. I clearly understand what independent means which is free from being control . But regarding this case, the EFCC is not free from being control as their are still answerable to the president. This is so because the president is the person who appoints who head the agency and he can also sack at will. That is why whosoever is appointed to head the agency must have sworn an oath of allegiance to the president behind close doors. So that whatever the president orders him to do,he won't disobey because he has already sworn to be loyal to the president who is the commander in chief.

EFCC are a criminal organisation used by the ruling party to oppress the people and their political rivals. There was a time when the EFCC broke into the home of a governor in the east, charged him to court for 2.9m fraud case and somehow the case was dismissed by the court (after the governor had switched political allegiances). Nowadays, the EFCC is infamous for breaking down doors of young boys and confiscating whatever they can.

You can see that it's just in our country Nigeria that you normally see things like this happening, because you can barely see senero like this occuring in the United States or in any other developed countries in the world. I still don't understand what is pretty going on anymore, everything is going at the opposite direction and nobody cares putting an end to this madness. However, the last time I checked if I am not mistaken, economic and financial crime commission (efcc) are surposed to be an independent body of their own but recently they've become so powerless that they can barely take decision or stand on their own without the intersection of the government, and to crown it all the president can now push them around at will against their political opposition. That's so bad so to speak. Furthermore, this whole thing is just becoming so annoying because I'm beginning to believe that instead of us moving forward, that's the more backwards we keep on going.

The Economic And Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) only disguised to be independent but are being used by the federal government to carry out their evil plans against any government officials that is not on their page and that is exactly what has transpired in the case of Osun state government where EFCC had to freeze the state account which is not done anywhere in the world and Nigeria is where you see such barbaric acts that goes against humanity, and this is done by Tinubu because he doesn't want the Treasury of the State to be used for campaigns by the opposition party. The EFCC and INEC are supposed to be independent bodies that are there to check mates how the government officials uses the treasury and probe those who embezzle public funds and INEC conducts free and credible elections but unfortunately they are being controlled by the president and that's the more reason Nigeria will never get better because these bodies will always carry out the instructions of the President.

If an elected president can dethrone a sitting governor, what is the EFCC that he can not dictate what is obtainable in that space? fact remains that our leaders have been given the kind of power that as long as they remains in power, they tend to dictate what happens across the different section of the federation. The judiciaries that are supposed to be independent are still at the mercy of the president, governors and other government official how much more the economic financial crime commission that is mostly brought into power by the presidency and the person made to take charge of that office is made answerable to the presidency. there is not a thing as an independent body in he country. those claiming to be independent have not been in situation where the president has to make them his problem. if that happens, the presidency always has his way of dictating what happens in each of these sectors.

Efcc was created as a political tools by Obasanjo to fight his political enemies, it was not designed to fight anti-corruption for the betterment of Nigerians, all the corrupt people are in the ruling party, yet the Efcc will not investigate them, Efcc only go after opposition leaders to intimidate them. Efcc are only after yahoo boys and not corrupt politicians, neev corrupt any Efcc arrest on politicians once they settle them, they will release them like Yaya Bello. There no fight the Efcc is fighting, they are political tools to silent opposition leaders. If the Efcc was fighting corruption Tinubu and some Governor's won't be in power today because they all have a corrupt cases.

Yes EFCC doesn't depend on the federal government, they have their own power to act against anybody in the country no matter their former position and froze their account but unfortunately it was the same thing our INEC is also doing because they're all under the pockets of our corrupt people in the country if not even the president wouldn't order them if their actions was legal because that's the reason why it was created on the first place, actually Nigeria government has use their hand to spoil EFCC because apart from what they're using them to do, they're all also corrupt people who are steeling.

This is democracy and you know that we don’t practice the best of democratic governance in Nigeria. That is a very big flaw and maybe the president can order them to unfreeze an account which has actually made them not looking independent. The president decides who becomes the chairman of the agency, he selects all relevant governing bodies of that agency, so there is no way that he cannot implicate the decision of the agency anytime he wants. Even though there were going to unfreeze the account, it shouldn’t have been published publicly that it was from the president, but this is politics and I also thought it from another perspective. What if the president did that to make it look like he won’t tolerate such act since the governor is not from the ruling party and making people feel that he’s not biased and just in his actions towards what the election conclusion outcome will look like. There are a lot of flaws here and this is how the country still gets undermined in the eyes of the global world.

Who pay the salary of the staffs of efcc? Who appoints the key officials of the efcc? Is it not the president, so I don’t see any way efcc can be independent. The government in power controls most activities of the efcc. Efcc can only be independent when it come to prosecuting individuals that are not politically affiliated. But when it comes to high political issues like we saw in Osun state, efcc becomes a tool of political oppress for opposition parties.

You raised a valid concern. An anti-corruption agency can hardly be seen as completely independent when its leadership is appointed through the executive and its funding ultimately comes through government structures. The real test of independence is whether the EFCC can investigate and prosecute people regardless of their political affiliation. If enforcement appears selective or politically motivated, it naturally creates doubts about the agency’s credibility. What Nigeria needs is an EFCC that serves the law, not whichever government is in power.
