Technology & AI: A machine, vehicle, or software system capable of sensing its environment, evaluating context, choosing actions, and adapting to new information without a human steering or intervening. (For example, self-driving cars or goal-driven AI agents).
That's fine up to a point which is that they are designed to operate within boundaries set by human designers & programmers.
The issue here is that some of the most advanced AI models see those guard rails as something hindering their operations and decided to find a way around them despite explicit programming not to and even hardware barriers such as wifi/Bluetooth/WAN connections to Internet-capable devices being supposedly disabled. Obviously the development labs need to actually physically remove the circuits used including all local LAN connections to any device outside of the core AI hardware that could be used to access the internet. These days removable has enough capacity to do a modern version of sneakernet between the developers workstations and the AI hardware.
