I'd rather not share the exact amount for privacy and security reasons, but it was basically my entire savings, so it was a huge blow to me.

I didn't ask you to share your wallet address or the transaction ID of your funds leaving your wallet. There is no privacy or security risk in posting how much in bitcoin you lost to this hack.

On the bright side, this whole situation made me realize that I should definitely split my holdings across multiple wallets moving forward.

This is not something that someone who just lost a huge amount of money (their entire savings) would normally say.

As to the "bright side" thing, I know how that sounds. But, when something bad happens to me I try to find something good in it or I will just go crazy thinking about it. I just do that in my mind. It was not that I was happy about losing money, it was that I did not want to completely lose my mind.

I am not here to show anything to anyone. I shared my experience with them. If someone does not believe me, it is okay, I cannot force anyone. But I know what did happen to me.

It was you who posted your personal experience about this hack on bitcointalk, which is a public forum. Don't you think that if you wanted to keep it all private like you claim, you wouldn't even bother posting about it here.

Of course you aren't. You are well within your rights to determine what you want to reveal or not. That said, i just think your story is made-up, but since i do not have a magic mirror to reveal things to me, i could as well be completely wrong.

I believe you are missing the point, as to why the post was made in the first place.

I am not here to explain all the money. So I wanted to come here, move on and think a little into how things should work. It is that which my posting was about. 2) If I had the desire to write a fake story and wanted people to take me seriously, I would write all of the little details that would make it more believable.

I have seen enough stories in the press of people getting into trouble for showing how much money they have. So no, I will not give out exact numbers and I do not believe it is unfair. The whole "asking" thing would make me wonder what the real interest is here since it is being asked for.

I am confused anyway. But, I made one and I can make more. I am not looking back, I am looking forward. This was all I wanted, from this thread.

I didn't perceive your initial post as one to seek sympathy. You suffered a severe loss and still posted in a quite composed manner indicating to move on.

When you're asking about wallets, hardware wallets likely, my personal recommendations are: Foundation Passport, Trezor, Bitbox02 (this is my current device of choice in the last few years).

I don't like how Coinkite behaved in the past, outing themselves as sort of enemies of open-source, to protect their code from potential competitors. And they screwed up their firmware really really badly which led to your and others substantial losses. Nobody deserves to loose their hard earned and hodled coins by such a stupid mistake of morons at Coinkite.

If you don't want to trust a hardware wallet vendor's implementation (hardware and software involved) to generate a wallet's initial random entropy, you can generate that base entropy yourself, e.g. by dice. Take your time to read and comprehend the following long article: Dice to seed — the methods Bitcoin wallets use to turn dice rolls into a mnemonic

A warning to less knowledgeable users: on the topic of "seed generation" it's in my opinion easier to do things less secure than to do things right and with top security. You should understand what you're doing when later coins are deposited in such a wallet. The security of a wallet depends on many factors and user's actions. If you have no or few clues, learn first before you do stupid things that you'll regret later.


Otherwise I usually recommend to keep a low profile with being a bitcoiner. The less you talk about it in public where it could be tracked to your real life person and address, the better. There's usually no need to disclose exact sums or so, unless you ask for specific transactions and need help with them. It should be known that a transaction history can reveal more details than intended.
