The Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) has been in operation for several years since 2014, working as an interim legislation to oversee the activities of the ports industry, but they were only relying on government policies and not having a proper legal backing to it activities.

The proposed legislation seeks to give the port economic regulator stronger legal backing to oversee economic activities in the sector, including issues relating to tariffs, rates, charges, competition, the licensing of port service providers, and the resolution of commercial disputes.

Akutah had also said that the emergence of NPERA would ultimately create a more solid regulatory foundation for the port sector, with the expectation that the new regime would contribute to a more efficient, competitive, and investment-friendly maritime industry.

This is a welcome development for Nigeria’s maritime sector. For years, NPERA has operated without a strong statutory foundation, which limited its ability to effectively regulate economic activities at the ports.

Giving the agency proper legal backing should improve transparency in tariffs and charges, promote healthy competition, regulate port service providers and provide a clearer mechanism for resolving commercial disputes.

However, the real test will be in implementation. The law must not only exist on paper; NPERA needs to be genuinely independent, properly funded and empowered to enforce the rules fairly. If that is achieved, it could make Nigeria’s ports more efficient, competitive and attractive to investors.

Well, this is a good one and I must commend the president for signing NPERA bill into law so they can be solely independent and propound their rules and regulations for themselves than waiting for government policies as it has been since 2014, but there's a question I want to ask, why is it now that Tinubu is about to recontest  that he is approving every bill and has even gone ahead to increase the military salaries, this is something he didn't do for the past three years in office or is it that because elections is by the corners and wants the citizens to see him in a good light and still vote for him or what?

Having a legal backing from the government is good but those that will be in charge of the agency should make good policies that will enhance fair tariffs, rates and compliance to resolving commercial disputes in the port sectors, they should work efficiently for the betterment of the ports not just being there to extort money.

Our ports needs to be decongested, we cannot have only Lagos port working and yet we still enacting laws. If you come to harbour Road in Port Harcourt, that is where we have the port Harcourt port, but if you go there, it's just ice fish, salt, wheat that are regular there, the same thing happen in the ONNE Port, this are Ports that can carry large cargo ships. We still have another port in Delta state Wori, the same goods that come to port Harcourt goes there, why are no cars, machines, electronics coming to those ports, why Lagos and the bad part is that, Lagos is small island when compared to how big this other cities are. Let them make laws to allow major goods to land in other ports outside Lagos

Good a thing that NPERA now have proper legal backing, that's a very good step but beyond the legal backing, they should've told us their plans on what they'll do with the powers. Before now, we've had different government agencies and policies with good legal framework but poor implementation. If this recent development will can make service users get to know how they're charged for every service, reduce unnecessary delays and fairly deal with the different service providers who default, that will make a real difference to the ports and businesses using them.

This is welcome development, being back up legally is very good to allow them function properly, but there are still things we need to hear, there are many government agencies that we know, they only exist when they are being mentioned for wrong doings, I hope NPERA will not be one of them, the president has done well in signing NPERA into law, good and fine, but we should not forget that there's money in this kind of Agency, let it not turn out to be an office that's created to enrich some people especially now that they are legally backed up.

Poor implementation of policies is always one of the biggest challenge of our Nigerian government institutions, because it's still very possible that this new law will be passed and yet no positive impacts on the common man on the street or Nigeria. Because if I may ask, what exact role have the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agencies been doing, because it's obvious the Nigerian Port Authority have always been the mega government institutions that oversees all activities in our Nigerian Port, most especially the Lagos Apapa Port. And to be honestly speaking, I see this as a campaign strategy against next year presidential election, because it's obvious this policy is never going to have a positive impact on the prices of food items in this country.

You should have known that in Nigeria today those offices are created not to function effectively but just to enrich themselves in an indirect means. This stealing methods have been in existence even before now and will continue to operate in same direction because our leaders knows exactly how to steal in an indirect way.
Assuming this body would work in a transparent way,  this would have been one among the best done by this current administration because there independence will help offer help in the importation and exportation departments and may also create room for a balanced operational system in matters related to that.

You know it’s really shocking that a critical sector to the nation’s economy is still having their legal backing in 2026 after how many years of this country independence, isn’t that worrisome? That’s to tell us the level of corruption that has been happening in this country. When I saw this post, I was thinking they were going to tell us what we should expect in the short and long term. Like opening up more ports in the country and making sure that they are up to international standards, so that the pressure in the Lagos port will reduce. Things like this are what I was expecting honestly.

In as much as say I see this as a welcome development if E dy happen true true, but I dy very suspicious of things like this, in this period of time because since election don dy near, this our government don dy act nice this days just to buy our mind for we to believe say them sabi work, but the truth be say, even though them implement this thing wey them wan sign into law, e no erase the fact that this government gets a lot of shege wey them don plan for us dy wait, so many we no too happy for things like this because only one bad policy like the heavy taxing them don plan to implement fit erase all the good things and render all this things useless, so make we no too happy abeg, until this present government is voted out of power.
