I would think someone would return to gambling after quitting for the same reason they would return to anything they have given up. They probably enjoyed it and miss its absence. This can be true for gambling the same as anything else. If you spend a lot of time doing something, it can be hard to find alternatives to occupy that time.

"Promises are meant to be broken". I guess the dude takes this very seriously. Grin

Everyone makes mistake, it's like I met with an accident on the road and my parents said I should never drive again but after a year I end up driving again kind of situation. It is fine to gamble again but if the person didn't realize his mistake and keeps doing it again then consider him an addict already. Smiley

Exactly and that's my point of view too, people make promises and at the longrun couldn't keep to it and they break it which is very normal especially when the person Involved must have learnt his lessons from how he has made mistakes from the time he started gambling without having self control nor making provisions for bankroll Management which led him to using his school fees to gamble and has ended up with regrets, if such person has realize his mistakes as we all make silly mistakes in one way or the other wants to gamble again then I don't see anything bad in it because we all deserve a second chance.

There are people who realizes their mistakes and don't care to quit nor take a break from it even knowing the fact that they are addicted to gambling, is that not foolishness when something is killing you and instead of quitting you continue doing the same thing that's to the extent some gambles don't realize their mistakes and have a retract on their activities towards such.

This thread is inspired by a true-life story:

A friend of mine while we were growing up, made quite a terrible mistake with gambling. The money that was ment for his school fees, he used it to gamble and that really made his family lose interest in supporting anything that concerns his education.  Because of the result he got from both sides he vowed never to gamble again because it almost ruined his relationship with his family. Recently I met with this same old friend and he was still in the act of gambling.
He is definitely not the only one who has declared not to gamble again but still did it anyway, so my question is:
What do you think would have prompted these people to return to gambling?
From the standpoint of experience regarding using his school fees to gamble, plenty of things can lure students into this act, especially when the financial support they're getting from their parents isn't enough to take care of their university expenses, and some students do opt into gambling to see if they can help themselves sort out their needs since they don't have a job.

What can cause someone who has quit gambling to resume is one, to seek revenge, and the other is if their financial situation is still not healthy. Or it can still be a possible addiction.

Your friend who used to spend his school fees on gambling is not actually recreational gambling. Because gambling is fun when it is played in a controlled manner with the money left after all his expenses. But from what you say, it seems like there was no control in it. I personally think that one of the reasons for returning to gambling again is old habits and overconfidence. If someone thinks that I made a mistake before, but this time I will be able to control myself. On the other hand, many may return in the hope that they will be able to recover the money they lost earlier.

He is definitely not the only one who has declared not to gamble again but still did it anyway, so my question is:
What do you think would have prompted these people to return to gambling?

I think it's more of addiction like it slowly creeps you in as it never goes outside your system unless you completely commit into not doing it.

In order to fully recover from your addiction, the change must be gradual- meaning, it must be done in a piece-by-piece basis. If you suddenly quit a habit after years of developing it into your system, there is a high possibility of you relapsing thereby wasting all of the effort you've done in the process.

Straight to the question. There are different factors that can make a former gambler to return but there is one common one which happens to everyone quited gamblers. And that should be partial winning. Once or twi winning in gambling can make them to come back because they believed that since they have won before the can win big one day to recover their losses.

And another thing is the winning of peer group and friends. If someone close to them wins big then it would motivate them to come back again to gamble to see if they can also wins. This has been discussed before.

I also subscribe to your perspective as it really makes sense in this context.

The problem with gambling addiction is its very nature that involves the risk of a person earning or losing money. At the end of the day, the aspect of money controls almost all of our life decisions especially if you consider one's financial status and dire need.

Most times promises like this comes from the heart of immediate regrets, what I mean is that, the promise not to gamble can be made when he have lost that school fees and need help from his family that when he mentioned he will never gamble again, but from the Dept of his heart, he is very much aware that he is not quitting and will eventually go back to his gambling habits,. sometimes is easier said than done; I still remember a similar situation with a guy who gambled with other people's money and later was arrested but released on bail, only to go back to gambling to search for a win that he could use to repay the debt, so you see the extent to which addiction can affect the behaviour of its victims.

People have different reasons why they end up returning to gambling after they have promise themselves not to gamble again. Most times it’s the hope of making quick money, the excitement that gambling offers and recovery from previous losses.  When you allow gambling to become a habit, it will be very difficult to stop completely, especially when you come across people that are winning.

For some people it’s financial pressure, stress, or the belief that, this time I will win, that pushes them to go back to gambling. The main problem is that once gambling has become a habit, promise alone isn’t enough to stop it. A person needs self control and also needs to distance themselves from anything that will trigger the urge to gamble.

You dont need to gamble with your future or career...Using money thats meant to pursue a career and gamble, it's unacceptable by me, i will not deprived him education, but I will make sure that i punish him for his attitude and mistakes..in a norms, a student is not suppose to participate in gambling, because gambling have a negative influence that will make a student deviate from concentration in studies

Gambling is not meant to someone who's subordinate, he will realise his mistakes because of the punishment the family gave to him, so without a gambler facing hard time, i dont think they can adjust..so when you notice that your family person that still under the control of the family gambles, make you sure you discipline the person, because if it's allowed to continue gambling, it can get addicted..

Gamblers can find it hard to quit even after an awful experience because gambling activities has more to do with psychology and emotions than it has to do with the amount one losses.
Most people enjoy risk and I think gambling gives them the kind of risk experience they want that stimulates their minds and can make them forget their problems even for a slight moment.

when you are a gambler, you are a player forever, you don't stop being one if you move away after a while
like when you smoke, i don't know if you can understand
if you stop smoking and then smoke just one more cigarette you will go back to smoking
because you don't stop being a smoker when you no longer smoke, you distance yourself from temptation.

Many gamblers often say that they will not gamble again but you will be surprise when they will come back to the game, of course I have said this to myself before, though my own case seems different and I believe anyone that find him or herself in such situation would say something like that. I  had almost  win for 5 good times, out of 15 games  it is only the last games that usually spoil my bets, I got angry and I said to myself that I'm not gambling again, then after 1 year I decided to come back again with different mindset. The truth is that if you have passion in football, nothing can make you stop gambling completely.

It seems to me that many people don't learn from their mistakes at all, especially when they're still young. Of course, a person can strongly regret their actions and promise themselves never to gamble again, but after a while, the emotions and bad memories fade away. Then the thought appears that next time everything will be different, they'll learn from their mistakes and do everything right, and the person goes right back to gambling.

I would think someone would return to gambling after quitting for the same reason they would return to anything they have given up. They probably enjoyed it and miss its absence. This can be true for gambling the same as anything else. If you spend a lot of time doing something, it can be hard to find alternatives to occupy that time.
Brokenness is one reason people return to gambling after quitting,  and they still keep wasting money in it, is good to take break from gambling returning is not the problem, return with sense and play smartly.

People don't return because they miss gambling,  it's hard to quit gambling when you have already into it. That's why I keep advising people not to indulge in gambling because is very hard to stop when you're into it.

The only reason why people go back into gambling is because the hope they once had in gambling still lingers in their mind, they might have swore to never come back but one day they will feel like they have missed out a lot.

Gambling when its already something that you like to do it will be very hard to let go completely, it's going to be a struggle for a while until you either defeat the desire or you succumbed to the feeling.

I keep telling people to focus more on making money from other things then use part of that earning to fund your gambling desires in a most responsible way possible.

Op, as he says his friend used to study in school, it is clear that they were minors and had no source of income. And during these times no attention should be paid to gambling. And for this mistake his family refused to bear all the money for education. There are two notable downsides to this feat. 1. Deprived of clear education, 2. Future financial loss (gambling addiction).

It is clear that casinos are made for adults. Because they are responsible and capable of self-control. But now it has taken a different form for most online casinos.

Gambling is a habit that would grow when you nurture it, and that is the case for some gamblers. They take gambling as the fastest way to escape poverty without considering the negative impact it has on their lives.

The brain remembers the excitement and thrill that comes with every bet, accompanied with the view once "potential winnings" that never comes. They see hope in every game and deal with it like its their breakthrough winning, that mindset is what draws them back to gambling even after quitting.

I believe we’ve all had bad experience gambling, same way we all promise not to gamble for some time and I don’t think quitting gambling can be done permanently. I will not assume your friend is an addict, I don’t find the tag addiction as something common rather when a gambler posses sign of such kind then we can say such person is addicted to gambling activity reason why they find it difficult to quit. People go back to gambling after quitting reason known to them, we can only assume, the most common reason might be addiction related though people just love to gamble for entertainment purpose and expect a win in return but, not to an extend risking important funds meant for something else, personally I can’t quit gambling probably because I’m not affected.

I think gambling starts with entertainment first, when it is not limited to entertainment, a desire to make money through gambling increases, as a result of which a person is attracted to gambling, a gambler cannot gamble with discipline, greed increases, whether it is by gaining money or by losing money. When a gambler continues to gamble based only on emotional decisions, the risk of losing money increases manifold. The greed of a person through gambling is the most dangerous. I think greed destroys the conscience of a person, as a result of which a gambler can repeatedly get emotional and fall hunting to gambling addiction even after quitting gambling. The man realized his mistake and put his family's honor and future at risk, which helped him refrain from gambling again. When a person's mind or emotions are in order through gambling, gambling cannot be a part of his life.

I would think someone would return to gambling after quitting for the same reason they would return to anything they have given up. They probably enjoyed it and miss its absence. This can be true for gambling the same as anything else. If you spend a lot of time doing something, it can be hard to find alternatives to occupy that time.
Yeah, I believe this is one of the major reasons people most likely return to gambling after quitting, and not necessarily about the money, especially for someone who mostly derive lots of fun and excitement from gambling. I remember the last time I decided to quit gambling because of a serious loss I experienced back then. Every now and then, whenever I see two teams playing, I’ll always feel like dropping my own prediction, because I actually do miss that feeling when my predictions actually turns out well. It literally didn’t take long before I started gambling again.

There are basically different reasons why people return to gambling even after quitting for a certain period of time, and that includes the irresistible urge of wanting to get rich quick through gambling. And we all know that such is never always easy as it seems, which is why the majority of people who aggressively engage in gambling don't always become successful with it, simply some after losing usually try to chase loses, and likewise those who are lucky to win a jackpot, sometimes do become greedy and eventually loses everything they have won. So it's actually sad that this irresponsible to the point of allowing gambling make him drop out from school and also ruined the relationship he had with his family.
