I have not heard of this Chinese myth about gambling, however, i am not doubting that it is not true because where i come from we have beliefs that are guiding us and anyone who goes against any of the beliefs will suffer. Since the Chinese myth allows Chinese gamblers to use 1 percent of the money they won from gambling and share 99 percent of the money it does not make sense to me, even if some gamblers are gambling for fun, they are suppose to decide how they will spend the money they won. I will not blame anyone who decide to go against this myth because someone who has lost plenty of money in gambling, it will not be easy for the person to give away 99 percent of his winning.

Do you have an article link for this? I mean, It's an interesting myth, and I'm curious to read it. Anyway, what would even be the point of gambling if you are only allowed to use a small amount of your winnings and share the rest?

What do you think? Have you ever heard about anything similar?
Yeah, there is a similar superstition here in the Philippines. I used to frequent e-bingo shops, and I've encountered gamblers giving some tips to other people after winning a decent amount of money. They believe that by doing that, they are inviting luck into them again. I am not really sure if this specific superstition is big in my country since I've only encountered several people who do this throughout the time that I was active on e-bingo shops. Also, I have a feeling that this superstition might be inspired by the myth you mentioned, because a lot of Chinese people have immigrated to my country since pre-colonial times.

I'm guessing you don't read the OP very well, I've said very clearly that a friend who is a Chinese guy told me himself, they believe that a gambler shouldn't be someone who wants to win for himself but for others, this is if you want to retain the luck 🤞

He made me believe that there is a spirit behind It, and for that spirit or gambling good luck to stay with you all you must do is give the money away, like I've said I tried looking for something like it online I couldn't come up with any.

It sound like people in china believes that bad energy comes from money made from gambling and the only way to supress it is giving it up especially to the poor, kinda, I don't believe it myself and it's why I bring it on here.

Chinese mythology is a distinct cultural tradition that likely still influences some people. But judging by statistics and market analysis, it’s unlikely that anyone actually subscribes to this idea.
In China itself, online gambling is banned, but it is possible to play on sites in Macau, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. However, there is an issue with access due to the "Great Firewall of China", which actively blocks VPNs. I don’t think anyone would gamble just for the sake of it, given those risks Smiley

I also think that this practice is outdated or happens in rural areas. With the high rate of inflation and the corresponding high cost of living, I don't think many people would want to share wins with friends. Let's say someone wins big, and based on this belief, they are expected to give away all the money. It doesn't make so much sense in present economic realities. In rural areas, people live communally, and this practice could work. In cities, people live more individualistic lives, and they don't even have friends to interact with. As I speak, I don't think I have many friends who know that I gamble.

What do you think? Have you ever heard about anything similar?

I have not heard such news yet, I gamble for pleasure but if I make a profit then I gamble with that money later. Different cultures have different laws, so there may be such laws in the Chinese tribe. For example, gambling is completely prohibited in the Muslim religion, but still some Muslims gamble for pleasure.
So at present I agree with enjoying the pleasure of gambling, those who spend a long time gambling for the purpose of earning money are the ones who basically face addiction. However, I have never heard of this rule of the Chinese tribe before.

Lol, that’s funny. So now, what if this is actually true, and a gambler decides to give away all the money he’s earned or won from gambling without keeping any for himself, and peradventure, the spirit of winning decides to stick with the gambler, and he’s able to win all the time, whenever he plays, he wins and as usual shares the money to everyone else but himself, so what’s in for him? I mean what does he benefit then from gambling? Because it kinda looks like the only reason he’s gambling is for others because he’s actually losing. Let’s say you gambles with $500, wins $20k and shares it to everyone, hasn’t he lost $500, since he’s not taking anything from his win. I think this is silly.

Bullshit. Asians are like ants - they're everywhere in the gambling industry, you'd think it was the opposite if they cared about this myth. It's also a sin in many religions but like no one listens, do they? so yea, I keep my opinion: bullshit! Grin Grin

There is this Chinese mythology that says gamblers aren't suppose to be eating the money they made from gambling, for the spirit of winning to stay with you as a gambler you must share away everything you won.
Then if I'm not surposed to eat from what I have managed to win after several attempts of trying, but rather share it away like some good Samaritan. Then what now happened when I am losing significantly? Who is going to share the lost with me when in lost? Is a question that requires sincere answer. Some situation are just so annoying.

This is the first time I am hearing something like this and if it was to be implemented in my country I don't think it would be funny at all because many people will stop gambling by force.

Wow. I find it fascinating because it deals with one thing, psychology. You make a win of let's say $1000 and give most of it away or all of it away. You would not find the need to chase more wins and hurt yourself in the process. You will also find no need to put in more money if you gambled your win and extra money from your end away. If people are actually following this, then I see some psychological positivity in their believe system. But giving all away shouldn't now create another problem by believing his next gamble will be a win. So for everything, there's the negative and positive side. Hope I am right about that.

Keep yours, but they have their own as well. What was shared is part of Chinese culture, it's their way so we just gotta respect that.

But we also do things our own way. I'm not Chinese and in our religion I think gambling is also prohibited, but maybe those are old teachings because they don't want people to get addicted.

Since the gambling industry is growing, I think it's better that we learn the risks and know how to manage them. For me it's better to understand how gambling works than completely stay away without knowing anything, then one day you get tempted and lose everything because you don't even understand the risk.

I find the idea to be totally absurd. Because you’re literally just wasting your time in gambling if you ever decide to follow that myth. I mean, isn’t it better to just do your thing, rely on luck as usual and enjoy your money when you win, because there’s definitely a pay day for every gambler, it’s just a matter of maintaining a responsible mindset and approach as well as self control.

There is this Chinese mythology that says gamblers aren't suppose to be eating the money they made from gambling, for the spirit of winning to stay with you as a gambler you must share away everything you won.

While few Chinese believe that it should be you taking only 1% from the whole balance, some said you aren't suppose to touch any penny, I first heard this from a online Chinese friend in china but we couldn't talk more about it because I can't reach him anymore.

I tried looking for something similar online but I couldn't find any, it seems to be a thing in Chinese culture but at the same time I asked him about the big casinos in Macao and some regions in china and he said those people chose to ignore their culture and they are paying hard for it.

What do you think? Have you ever heard about anything similar?

The concept is almost the same as gambling for fun, don't care what you win, grow your sense of happiness.

On the other side of my logic what maybe it is the general culture? or just a mere advice to gamblers, so it's a saying sentence not culture, because these are two different things, culture is a form of habit and proverbs usually contain wise advice for the Chinese people, so I think this is a saying Not culture, and with a way of looking like that is good but does not fit with modern people who will certainly take more advantage, plus a fairly large victory tax, it is definitely better to take for yourself, and maybe buy a small portion of food or drink to enjoy with family or friends.

Too bad that I'm someone who doesn't believe in myth,so those Chinese traditions doesn't work on me. If by any chance you apply those Chinese ancient guide on your gambling, you might regret it later as you will be the biggest loser in the end.
Ancient rules are applicable during those ancient times but not anymore because in this generation, technology has taken over, so nobody will give credence to those Chinese myth anyone. Gambling is not a culture but for entertainment purposes so those Chinese myth will have no effect on Chinese gamblers who spends more than 1% of their winnings.

What do you think? Have you ever heard about anything similar?

I have heard many similar stories... I guess we all did, if you do/don't do something, something good/bad will happen to you. This one is just about gambling, or better to say gambling winnings... if you lose, nothing happens, but if you win, you need to give it away. A bit foolish, in my opinion...

I'm not a superstitious person, so I don't believe in these things... But I like to read or hear new myths, especially the positive ones.

I don't think any government would enact this rule, it's better gambling was banned totally than not being able to benefit from your win after losing for a while. Anyways, it's just a belief and nothing else, not everyone would abide by it and those sharing that culture might decide to leave the village when they want to gamble, so they're not limited by such superstitious beliefs, just like those who live in countries where gambling is banned go to other countries where it's legal for holidays to enjoy themselves freely.

~snip~

What do you think? Have you ever heard about anything similar?

I’ve known that not only in Chinese mythology but in other beliefs as well, there’s a belief that if we love to share we’ll get more of what we share. If we share money, more money will come to us, if we loves to share food we won’t end up starving in our live, etc.

I’m kinda confuse, If we couldn’t enjoy the money we won from gambling then what’s the point for people who believe in that myth to gamble in the first place? Someone with that belief probably wouldn’t gamble their money cause it would be pointless. It would be better for them to spend it on other things. Maybe elders tend to see gambling as a bad habit so they’re making new rules that eventually become a kind of new belief to make sure the younger generation doesn’t gamble. That’s what I think tho.

Well to my understanding, gambling started thousands of years ago and back then, folks were using animal bones as dice just to bet. Later on ancient China created the early tile games. Still the first casino in history was opened in Italy around 1638. I guess that explains it. China created the first tile game, and I think that was why they created such an ideology of not making use of your gambling wins..
All these are basically ancient, and we are presently in modern days now. Certainly not everyone will follow up with such a concept. Risking your funds just to make profit, only to give it to others, sounds unfair to me. Well I barely know anything about Chinese culture all I can say is that I believe religions always have their mysterious reasons as to why they make certain rules...

There is this Chinese mythology that says gamblers aren't suppose to be eating the money they made from gambling, for the spirit of winning to stay with you as a gambler you must share away everything you won.

Then what happen  if you loss, is there a mythology for losses or they only implement it for winners? If so then I would say it's fine but if the mythology is only when there's win then it doesn't make sense and if I'm from such country I will quit gambling completely. even though we are gambling for fun that profit we get most of the time from gambling is one of the things that make the game to look more interesting and fun, so without that I'm sure that no one would think of gambling because there's nothing to gain aside from the fun and you might probably get tired at some point.

Belief is different from the law, but most of the time when a country has one dominant religion or teaching, that usually affects what is allowed and what is not. That's one reason why gambling is banned in China.

But look what happens, people who don't really follow that belief and still want to benefit from the gambling business just go outside China and operate in countries where it's legal. In that way they won't get jailed for it.

Business people will always find ways to stay safe with the law, but when it comes to belief, that's already something personal. If they feel they are violating what they were taught then that's on them, and honestly that's none of our business anymore.

There is this Chinese mythology that says gamblers aren't suppose to be eating the money they made from gambling, for the spirit of winning to stay with you as a gambler you must share away everything you won.
The best way is for them to gamble without depositing money to the casino and gamble only free because definitely if someone deposit money into casino, he will like to win a d take the profit to do something so if he is to share the profit from his deposit then ther eia no need for gamblers to deposit money and play games.

We have to be grateful for enlightenment, cause if not for how a lot of myths were questioned based on reasoning and many could not be explained, just as this Chinese myth. The gambler bears the risk of loss alone and when he wins he shares it without taking a penny. Is the gambler running charity through gambling?

I tried looking for something similar online but I couldn't find any, it seems to be a thing in Chinese culture but at the same time I asked him about the big casinos in Macao and some regions in china and he said those people chose to ignore their culture and they are paying hard for it.
This is not a culture except you telling me that the Chinese culture in general supports  gambling. If I was a Chinese man I will ignore it too, there is no meaning in it.
