Hello friends, bone777 here.

I recently watched the HBO documentary "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" by Cullen Hoback, and I wanted to bring this discussion here to the forum, where the history actually happened.

The filmmaker basically concludes that developer Peter Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto. To be honest, after looking at the "proof" presented in the movie, a lot of it feels like a big stretch designed for Hollywood drama rather than a solid investigation.

Hoback focuses on a few main arguments, like a 2010 forum reply where Peter Todd responded to Satoshi, which the director claims was accidentally posted from Todd's second account. He also points to Todd's interest in cryptography at a young age and his use of British/Canadian spelling.

But to me, this looks like weak circumstantial evidence. Peter Todd himself completely denied it in the film, calling the theory ridiculous. Most of the early cypherpunks used similar terminology, and hiding identity was common practice back then.

It feels like HBO just needed a dramatic ending for the mainstream audience who doesn't understand blockchain history, so they picked an active, well-known developer to close the case.

What do you guys think? For those who have been on this forum for many years and maybe even interacted with Peter Todd or saw the early days: did the documentary actually bring forward any real evidence, or is it just another media attempt to cash in on Satoshi's name?

Let's discuss.

I haven't seen the documentary, but in any case, Peter Todd is quiet active in the community, (at least the last time he is online and posting is around May 16, 2025). Satoshi disappeared in 2010 and we haven't heard from his since. And if you are interested, you can go in this thread, I gathered every Satoshi Nakamoto thread.

That Dorian Nakamoto meme is classic! Fits this situation perfectly.

Thank you so much for the link to your archive, @DaveF. Gathering every single thread by Satoshi Nakamoto is an incredible historical effort for this forum, and I will definitely dive deep into it.

Your point about the timeline completely destroys the HBO theory. Peter Todd was posting openly, arguing with people, and contributing as a known developer, while Satoshi completely vanished into silence in 2010. It takes a lot of mental gymnastics from a Hollywood director to ignore this basic community timeline just to create a dramatic television climax.

Really appreciate you sharing your archive here. This is exactly the kind of historical context the mainstream media completely ignores!

Peter Todd is not Satoshi Nakamoto and he denied it, many articles about it. theymos did not think Peter Todd as a candidate of Satoshi Nakamoto.

Peter Todd said it.
Why Peter Todd is not Satoshi Nakamoto.
Who is Peter Todd?
Former Bitcoin developer Peter Todd denies he is Satoshi.

My current feeling on Satoshi's identity is:
 - Sassaman is a very bad candidate. If this is their conclusion, then they totally failed to do proper research.
 - 50% chance it's someone nobody's ever heard of, and nobody will ever figure it out
 - 35% chance it's Hal Finney. (Over time, I've moved more probability into this category.)
 - 10% chance it's someone else in the Bitcoin-verse
 - 5% chance it's a group within the CIA

Thank you, @OcTradism, for bringing that official quote from theymos into this thread. This completely settles the debate.

When the main administrator of Bitcointalk—who literally watched the entire history unfold here—says that the filmmakers totally failed to do proper research, it shows how weak the HBO documentary actually is.

Theymos's breakdown makes so much more sense. The 50% probability that Satoshi is an unknown figure who just wanted to protect their life and vision is logically the most sound theory. If Satoshi wanted to stay hidden, they wouldn't register a new known account like Peter Todd right after "vanishing."

Appreciate you dropping these high-quality links and the historical quote!

Just wanted to add an update to this topic. I read recently on Cointelegraph that Peter Todd actually had to go into hiding after this documentary aired because crazy people started harassing him for money, believing he is Satoshi with billions in BTC. Here is the source: https://cointelegraph.com

It is crazy how the mainstream media can completely disrupt a real developer's life just for TV ratings and a dramatic ending. Hoback's "proof" was so weak, but ordinary people who don't understand blockchain took it seriously.

Has anyone here seen any comments from other early Bitcoin developers about this documentary? It would be interesting to know what the technical community thinks about HBO trying to force this identity on Todd.
