I think the malware is downloaded on devices when someone want to download movies of 1080p WEBRip and Blu-ray releases, probably on pirates sites.

The malware targets passwords, browser sessions, cookies and crypto wallets.

It is best to avoid malware. Learn how to avoid it. Example is by not downloading pirated movies from untrusted sites, but there are still more to learn, make findings.

Bitdefender products prevented users from downloading these malicious files and deleted them.  It is an advertisement for their products.

Bitdefender researchers have already observed malicious files disguised as The Odyssey (2026) circulating online. According to internal insights, Bitdefender security solutions prevented users from downloading and executing malicious files.

Several lure filenames were observed, including:

the odyssey 2160phd (2026) engsubs eztv.exe
the odyssey 2026 1080p h264-djt.exe
the odyssey 2026 1080p webrip-lama.exe

download files are in .exe format, not the common video formats. exe files should not be downloaded from unknown sources.

Yes this is another reason why people must have a separate device for movies without them using their investments or trading devices to associate too much on Internet especially where they would have to use it to download movies. Nowadays it's better not to down movie, instead people can make account on Netflix and then login to watch any type of movies they could want for themselves.

I’m not sure if any site that post a pirated movie can be trusted .. though the trust scores differ for each and there’s high chance you download a malware on some sites than you will on some [still standing on the fact that none can be trusted anyway especially the ones that allows torrent files ].

If you’re the type that deals with pirated stuff, run it in a sandboxed environment or at least test it there first to see how it behaves.. I sometimes run pirated games and end up replacing their executable with the official one while leaving the mod files as they are[that itself neutralize 98% of whatever is on the malware].. But generally, I always run them in an isolated environment.

download files are in .exe format, not the common video formats. exe files should not be downloaded from unknown sources.
Wouldn’t anyone who sees that the file ends in .exe just avoid opening it? But as the article explains, The trick is that hackers can set the .exe file’s icon to look exactly like the VLC media player icon or another media player. This can make you think that the file you downloaded is the movie you wanted.

You can right-click the file and select Properties to check whether it’s an .exe file or a normal MP4 media file, because you can’t really tell by looking at it. That’s where the trick comes in.

There are so many pirated movies and websites promoting them and some of these sites may be made to infect your device, either through malware or malicious pop-up ads.

That’s why using a good antivirus is important. It’s also much safer to watch movies through official, legitimate platforms and pay for a subscription rather than risk getting hacked.

  • Use security software capable of behavioral detection, since many Lumma samples are newly compiled and may not yet have established reputations.
Note for Windows users: If you think the behavioral detection on Windows Defender is enough to protect you against such malware, you're wrong [it has certainly improved in the past few years, but the dedicated paid security tools tend to offer way more protection than the basic protection that you'll get with the built-in Windows Defender].
