I have been re-reading Andreas Antonopoulos's famous book, "The Internet of Money," and it’s crazy how accurate his lectures still are today. In his early chapters, he talks deeply about how Bitcoin fixes the traditional financial system by replacing human trust with mathematical proof.
But look at where we are today. We escaped the traditional banking system, but many users immediately rushed back into the arms of new centralized third parties. Millions of people today keep 100% of their crypto on exchange accounts, custodial web wallets, and gambling platforms. They treat centralized balances exactly like traditional bank accounts.
We are voluntarily giving away our financial sovereignty just for a comfortable UI, fast trading, or flashy marketing, completely forgetting the golden rule: "not your keys, not your coins." Every time a major platform freezes an account, hides terms, or faces a data leak, it proves Antonopoulos's words—trusting a centralized middleman is always a technical vulnerability.
I want to start a discussion about this shift in user psychology. Why are we becoming too lazy to maintain our own self-sovereignty? Is the current crypto community losing the core educational values that Antonopoulos and early cypherpunks fought for?
P.S. I registered this account many years ago but never posted because my English was too poor to argue with legends here. Now, with better translation tools, I finally decided to dust off my profile and participate in discussions that actually matter to me.

So many are used to the traditional financial system control by the regulatory authorities and have developed more confidence in them to the extent that they can't even find it easy to trust any alternative, therefore don't be surprised seeing that some people will not yield to considering bitcoin adoption because they will always be adamant about how they have been so used to the centralized financial system with Fiat, you are not making any difference if you are still using a centralized exchange with bitcoin despite being involved in cryptocurrency at this age.

You aren't arguing here on the forum and what do you mean by legends? Do you mean legendary member? by the way it is a little bit patronizing. You are free to enter a logical discussion with anyone without it being an argument and congratulations on brushing your English. In between since 2025 that you came back using good English you never went back to your local board, did you learn English and unlearn your local language? Well we have people now that are only interested in the investment profits they can make from Bitcoin, that all that is important to them and they don't care much about the core values of Bitcoin.

Those people still using centralised exchanges and platforms really dont care about Bitcoin, they care solely on their profit. Maybe they are thinking they can quickly buy and sell because their funds are there already.
Its crazy that those people are not willing to spend $50 on a hardware wallet and taking full ownership of their funds, and I wont believe that they dont know the risks of centralised exchanges and the benefits of self custody, bot in this day and age. There has been enough talk about the disadvantages and advantages to not know.

Moreover, it's nice to have you back on the bitcointalk forum, where we share vital information about Bitcoin, it's investment processes and security. And it's very okay for people to agree and also disagree with whatever post been made that relates to Bitcoin, since that's the main reason why we all come here to learn from those who have knowledge and experience far more than us with the use of Bitcoin. And secondly, it's not bad trying to reassure people about the importance of using non custodial wallets where they could own the private keys of their asset, Because it is obvious many people have forgotten about it and now feel very comfortable using centralized exchanges, despite the fact that those exchange could be hacked or your account frozen if discovered to be linked with a crime, just like our traditional banks.

Andreas sold us on the beauty of trustless math, but human nature always defaults to convenience. The average person is absolutely terrified of being their own bank and chooses the bank's reset link over a seed phrase any time.
And to be frank, I consider this reaction very justified. Most people are just very irresponsible with digital things.

People who do not deserve freedom tend to voluntarily give away the freedom. Which is part of the reasons I do not believe it's a good idea to get everyone into Bitcoin or give everyone freedom whether it's deserved or not. The undeserving ones will either abuse the freedom or voluntarily go back to servitude. It's like giving a child his own house to live seperately from parents, he would first of all celebrate the freedom by playing loud music or screaming loud for awhile disturbing the neighbors, then he starts messing up the property, coming home late and doing whatever he wants. While the other kids won't be brave enough, will want parents or adults to come live with them I think we are better off with the latter, but they shouldn't be too much in number or have large amount of bitcoins to become a threat to decentralization and other principles of Bitcoin.
There is another group of kids that will be passionate about freedom/Bitcoin and be humble enough to let mutured people guide them. This is probably the only group you could invite into the world of Bitcoin and decentralization

It is easy to preach self custody but in reality, it is practically difficult for many users. As humans we tend to prefer the easier route in every situation without weighing in first on the disadvantages. Big whales like binance saw this human psychological weakness and capitalised on it.
Reliance on custodial exchanges will keep on growing so long as such psychological weakness is common among users.

In reality, the major issue lies with "third parties", or "centralized entities". In my view, it is not just Bitcoin that is unsafe when held by centralized parties; other valuables carry significant risk as well, whether physical cash, or digital money (by whatever name it goes).
Bitcoin represents a major revolution in the realm of global finance (fiat), effectively challenging the financial systems that have long been in general use. Its existence is immensely beneficial, particularly for those who value privacy, and wish to avoid being controlled. I think Bitcoin is more than just a currency; it serves as a safeguard; a protector of human freedom against unscrupulous hands, iykyk.

@bone777, you can not bring everyone to same way of thinking like you. Bitcoin has reduced trust everyone know that. But it not completely removed human error or operational risk. Just getting out of exchange and taking self-custody is not comfortable for everyone. A lot depend on your own security practice. Also it is not right to say that users are becoming too lazy. Convenience is definitely a big factor, I won't deny that. But as I said technical complexity of self custody are not completely unrealistic. Things like inheritance planning, phishing and the fear of making an irreversible mistake can be just as important for many people. Coingecko's survey, 53% of hodler said they like to keep their holding into self custody. While 41% still prefer to keep them in CEX. So, there will always be exception, of cource. I would not call those 41% people lazy, they just have different priorities.

Thank Tik Tok and such platforms for lowering the intelligence of most people. Is the current crypto community losing the core educational values that Antonopoulos and early cypherpunks fought for?
In my opinion. No. Early Cypher punks were almost as rare as they are today. When was the last time you heard about one? Can you name 10? Or. Even 5? It is very difficult to make the average person have full control over things all of a sudden. They would do really stupid things. See people winning the lottery only to lose every thing to hookers in less than an year. See people who purchase Bitcoin and send it to a complete stranger pretending to be a celebrity promising to double their Bitcoin for free. We are used to having a Third Party come up with a solution for any problem that we have. We can dispute transactions if we were scammed. We can create a new card if we lost it. Some body always saves your day. We are NOT used to have control over things. It means discipline and most people lack it.

A better approach for me is to use CEX as spending and trading on-ramp tool. But for long term Bitcoin, you have to keep control of your keys. There will be no excuses in this case. Another important thing is that even if there is Proof of Reserves, it is not an alternative to self custody in any way. Reserve can show you that the exchange has asset, but they will never hand over unilateral control of those coins to users. it proves Antonopoulos's words—trusting a centralized middleman is always a technical vulnerability.
So the lesson of Antonopoulos to me is that where the protocol allows me to control my own money without trust then why should I do unnecessary third party trust!

The centralized exchange promises so many returns and does lots of marketing that attract users into keeping their funds in them. Perhaps, many do not know what they are doing, they are less knowledgeable about safety in decentralization and so they become victims of any vulnerability in centralized system.
In my wide knowledge of life, a message is not for everyone, so as Andreas message too is not for everyone. No matter how many preachers are in the industry, there are many numbers that will still gets trap in the centralization system and get fucked up.
That's just how it works and how it had been for long too, if everyone gets the information, then the centralized platforms wouldn't work.

Thank you all for such a deep, high-quality discussion. Reading all these perspectives from the community is exactly why I decided to return to active posting here.
First, let me quickly clear up my postscript for BIT-SENDER. I definitely didn't mean to sound patronizing or arrogant! When I used the word "legends," I wasn't talking about the forum rank system at all. I just meant the experienced OGs and veteran bitcoiners who actually understand the technology. As someone getting back into the groove of things, I genuinely look at the long-time members here as people to learn from, not to argue with for the sake of it. My apologies if it came out wrong.
You guys brought up an incredible point about user psychology, especially BlackHatCoiner, Smack That Ace, and PrivacyG. That survey graphic perfectly visualizes the war between freedom and convenience. PrivacyG hit the nail on the head about discipline—the modern world, with its TikTok brain rot and corporate safety nets, has conditioned people to expect a "cancel transaction" or "forgot password" button for everything. Taking 100% personal responsibility for your wealth is terrifying for the average person. They would rather trust a shady middleman than risk losing their seed phrase.
But as uunammox, Alvin_talk, and Odogwu-Blockchain pointed out, this is exactly the weakness that giant platforms like Binance exploit with their aggressive marketing and glossy interfaces. I agree with CryptoBuds that using an exchange as a quick trading tool or a fiat on-ramp is fine, but treating a CEX balance as a long-term savings account completely defeats the purpose of Bitcoin. Proof of Reserves means nothing if you don't hold the keys.
Ultimately, I think Ucy made a very profound point—maybe Bitcoin really isn't for everyone yet. If a user isn't mature enough to spend $50 on a hardware wallet and learn basic cyber-hygiene, they will inevitably become victims of the centralized system, no matter how many times we preach the tech.
But this shouldn't make us stop trying. This thread proves that the core educational spirit of the early cypherpunks is still alive right here. We shouldn't lower our standards to fit corporate convenience. Instead, we need to keep pushing for simpler, more accessible OPSEC education so that newcomers can learn how to be their own bank without being paralyzed by fear. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread, this is what the forum is all about.

Why are we becoming too lazy to maintain our own self-sovereignty?
I think with a recent cold card attack and data leaks from the hardware wallets, this makes a good argument for those lazy ones that you're mentioning. That's what they think is the right thing to do and they don't have another option of which one to trust. But as for me, I'll still take holding my coins as a strong argument and will continue to do it even with so much happening from these hardware wallets. And that is because they're not the only way of keeping our own coins. We only have to know what is more comfortable to us without having the need to sacrifice of holding the funds by ourselves. Is the current crypto community losing the core educational values that Antonopoulos and early cypherpunks fought for?
For every market and industry, we have the same values for how we keep things safe. Like the gold investors, they can have their own vaults but they think it's better to let the banks hold it for them or just invest into digital golds where the banks gives them the number. IMO, the community still has got a lot of young holders and not yet in depth into how they keep their bitcoins. But as time passes by, we'd see a growth with that where everyone is going to evangelize the importance of self custody.
