Over the years Nigeria has had only one major stream of income which is oil. Relying heavily on oil has caused us to think that we can't export anything other than oil. But that is about to change or already changing.
As usual, always doing that out of boredom sometimes. I came across a video on YouTube where Zenith bank is pushing the idea more and more organising everyone to come together to make it work even more. They made a statement that caught my attention Nigeria is more than oil. That's not just any statement. But what is happening. Nigeria in the first quarter of 2026 has made a profit of over 9 trillion naira from non crude products after 50 years of heavily relying on oil. That's a massive plus to the economy.
This goes to show that we are not just talking about whether it can be done or not. It's already happening. We can do it and scale up even more further.
My question is what more can be done to actually scale up even more further than we already are?
Is there any possibility of the government to even back the sectors who have accomplished this massive milestone?

Op if you will agree with me you will understand that during the 80s when Nigeria has other sources of revenue generations and other sectors like the palm oil and cocoa farm produce exportation the country wasn't so difficult in terms of food and Job creation, Nigeria has a good landmass and would have continued with the agriculture that we were once known for but the leaders that came after the 80s no longer pick interest in those areas, now imagine if Nigeria is operating from Agricultural products and oil the country would have been flowing with wealth. The government won't even back any sectors that has achieved such a milestone in the economy because they don't have the interest of the people, all they are after is to embezzle public funds and the country is blessed with rich soil and minerals resources but our problem is that we don't have leaders who's vision keys into dirversifying the economy into agriculture and other sectors that will help us grow and develop.

It's just sad that the Nigerian government only focus on Crude oil while ignoring other sectors that could generate them billions of dollars daily such as the telecom industry and that of mining other natural minerals that is available in the different parts of our country like Gold and Uranium as a natural resources. Because if we are to take MTN as an example, this company generate billions daily from both airtime and data that millions of Nigeria buys daily from this company, and if Nigeria was to start a similar strong telecom network like MTN, that's how the money would have been generated and also used in our country to better the lives of its people, but yet the money keeps going to other countries. So until Nigeria gets a visionary leader who sees beyond crude oil, we will keep suffering in this country.

It would have made more clarity if you had shared the link of where Zenith bank, made that comment about Nigeria, being more than oil so we will also know specifically those products that generated the 9 trillion naira, it's not like I'm doubting you but we should have learnt so much more from the original source. Having said that I know that Nigeria, has so much potentials to become far greater than where we are but due to bad leadership and corruption we cannot grow beyond where we are now, we have a lot of resources but our government concentrated on crude oil export. Some of our mineral resources are illegally exported and enriching a select few in high places, these politicians and powerful individuals knows what to do but they won't do it because they wouldn't enrich themselves anymore. I believe that if the right leaders are voted into power they will grow many sectors in the economy and increase our exports, by then we won't over rely on crude oil for export as s nation.

Definitely Nigeria is more than just crude oil, Nigeria is a country blessed with a fertile land, good weather and a lot of natural resources, it is just ignorance and corruption on the part of the Nigerian leaders that have made them focus just on crude oil, before now Nigeria was exporting palm oil in large quantities to other countries, till date Nigeria still have large deposits of cocoa, there is a place called Ikom in Cross Rivers state where the entire community are cocoa farmers producing large quantities of cocoa but the government isn’t focusing so much on them, of recent i even saw a video where the NDLEA was destroying a cannabis farm because of ignorance, they destroyed the entire cannabis farm which worth billions saying it is illegal, something that can be used as raw materials for some pharmaceutical products etc, Nigeria even have large deposits of rubber in Edo state that they can export an make money and several other minerals but it is sad that ever since crude oil was discovered in 1956 in a town called Oloibiri in Bayelsa state the Nigerian government completely lost focus and have till date refused to develop other areas of the economy.

The interesting thing is that most of the region that has this oil still has other natural resources that they were depending on before oil exploration became a big deal but the unfortunate thing is that once oil gets discovered in those region, the attention shift from other resources and focus mostly on oil. Nigeria will survive any day and anytime without oil and even with the oil, we are still leading across several niches only that we are not investing heavily in those niche. we have large expanse of land that we are yet to start developing and investing in if we are looking at the agricultural sector and in ICT, business, and even entertainment, we have the best of brains and the most revered set of people you can think of. we are not a nation that just oil enriched, we are a complete nation that is just unfortunate with leadership problem.

This is exactly the problem: Nigeria is not short of resources; we are short of proper vision, investment, and responsible leadership. Agriculture, cocoa, palm oil, rubber, livestock, solid minerals and even other emerging industries could generate massive revenue and employment if properly developed. Crude oil should have been a catalyst for diversification, not a reason to abandon everything else. What Nigeria needs is not another discovery of resources, but the political will to develop and industrialize the resources we already have. We have the raw materials; the real question is whether our leaders have the commitment to turn them into sustainable wealth for Nigerians.

Eliminating the myopic reasoning of our leaders that concentrates only at crude oil in a country where different resources are present, Nigeria would have gone above this current position, although for now diversity to others minerals can never brings positive changes to Nigeria now because we lack quality leadership system and leaders capable of utilising those resources for the creation of a better Nigeria. The leaders present in Nigeria today are all criminals looking for the opportunities to show the stuffs they are made of.

I always believe that we're more than oil and there are a lot of things but limited, that the government will do to back up the factory to achieve milestones development. That is nothing but to restore peace back to the nation, no matter what the circumstances the development will only be achieve if the government is able to tackle insecurity, construction of major bad roads to facilitate easy transportation of goods and services from one location to another without delay and also to improve electricity. Because without electricity it will lead to inflation which will cause us more harm than good, and also to build more government companies like Shea butter processing company and other local products that will generate more revenue for the country.

Many things can be done, but our government policies are shit, we don't have a well organized settings, we have master strategists and technocrats in this country that can help our economy grow more but the level of politics in this country, deprives them the opportunity to be appointed and even though they are appointed, they will be instructed on what to do. For me, I do know that this country is more than oil, if we should go by what you have said, we have many mineral resources, apart from mineral resources, Nigeria is blessed with talents that can be helpful in terms of revenue creation, but my dear, our government are dream killers, I will be indirect to answer this question, personally I do not know if the Nigerian government will give the sector in question the support they need, because we have seen things like this scaling through because of the lack of vision that exist within our government.

Only leaders with citizens oriented can shift the present and current situation of Nigeria beyond oil mindset resources across all Cardinal point of Nigeria geographical location is above oil where our leader has seen as limit, even some minerals that are more precious than oil is down in our soil but can't be harness by our leaders instead rely on oil. Even what was sustainable in the past before the oil exploration went viral have be done no economy survive when destroying what you have before all in the name of focusing in another if the production of palm oil, latex popularly called rubber and cocco is well focus Nigeria economy, would have improved beyond what it's today even the agricultural practices have reduced, just because of oil focus.

You forgot to mention tin and Iron ore, we were doing better in that area too but the Ajaokuta steel mill that used to be one of the best steel company in Africa is nothing compared to what it used to be. Even without oil, Nigeria can generate money from other mineral resources but our government is dragging is backwards. We have lots of greedy politicians that only backs what they benefit from that's why we're not progressing cause instead them to use or resources to make the country better, they keep for themselves to make generational wealth for their families, Nigeria is a a great nation under the bondage of greedy politicians and until they out of power the country wouldn't progress.

Nigeria is richly blessed with natural resources but we have leaders that do not prioritize what we have but rather depend on other countries for what can be locally produced in our country. There are a lot of trees and forest in Nigeria so timber could be one profitable natural resources aside the popularly known resources that could yield good profits.
The Nigerian government could also look at working on refineries and ensuring they are in the best condition, that would also boost the production rate of valuable mineral resources that would help grow the economy.

For this country to maintain and sustain this momentum of growth in GDP from other produce besides oil, this government should have to focus more on manufacturing and patronizing locally made goods instead of more reliance on imports. The government also has to ensure there is access to funding in the form of grants or investment to export manufacturers or businesses that specialize in exporting raw products that are of immerse value to other countries who need it, instead of oil getting all the attention.
Lastly, more focus should be directed towards technology of the times, like how to utilize the Blockchain network for other industries besides crypto currency, how to educate the citizens on the use of cryptocurrency to earn, how to use AI tools to build efficiency and productivity in the workplace and am sure these would help generate more funds and provide jobs, thus improving the current GDP without much reliance or focus on oil.

Yes it's true,we are richly blessed with abundance of minerals but the problems is our democratic system.it was never adopted to promote fairness and freedom of speech rather it was introduced into our system to enslaved us so that they can steal our resources while we continue to fight against eachother. The government are puppet, they re been control by cabals who controls and dictate for them on what they will do and policies that they will implement. The era of cabal, godfatherism and colonial masters should come to an end because they are a major contributors to what is causing hardship and suffering and why Nigeria isn't growing.
