If your time to perform other activities can be taken because of chess, then you are addicted to it.
People can actually be addicted to something that they put or give too much attention to, we have people that love chess so much that they can spend all day playing it.
one of the reasons why you can spend a whole day playing chess is because of the thinking involved in chess, you are going to actually think for long and that thinking is killing time.

I have not actually seen someone that is addicted to chess and this is because people that are around me don’t play chess.
If people can be addicted to craft, then I believe people can be addicted to chess because they are almost the same thing.
That's true, because anything that takes most of our time and we find it very difficult to do without it especially when money is involved it can drive towards addiction. Again, any game at all can also be addictive regardless. However, Chess is a very cool game to play and most times when I'm playing it with my friends we just do it without involving money, probably that would have complicate things or maybe triggered addiction.

Again, talking about addiction in chess game is something I can barely see or maybe because I haven't given it more attention due to some other common games we normally play. But from what I have understood so far is that there is no game that's completely free from addiction, once you have devoted everything (time, energy, resources etc) you have in it, addiction becomes inevitable.

When considering the nature of gambling addiction, we can look at the example provided by chess. I hope that, in one way or another, everyone knows and loves this game. I asked myself: Why aren't there any addicts in chess? Even in prize chess? In my opinion, the answer to this question is obvious: it's a complex game in which you have to think, expend a lot of your brain's biochemical energy calculating options, considering the next move, calculating the pros and cons of strategies, and so on. Therefore, chess can hardly be called a game of chance; it practically doesn't breed addicts. Gambling addicts are born in places with simple game mechanics, where all you have to do is press a button. Slot machines, roulette, plinko, and so on. Sports betting involves more intellectual aspects, but even there, everything comes down to simple actions. Do you think the nature of chess can breed addicts?
The nature of chess does no breed addict because it is very complex, which you have already answered The question yourself. I have played chess game before and trust me it's very hard calculating the move of the king and the queen and if eventually you miscalculated and the queen is defeated then the game has already ended. So you have to guide it with the knights and rook, its a very difficult game it been Long I played it and I have even forgot it.  I just played it twice before I stopped, so I can tell that the game is not easy to be addictive because you wouldn't like to spend time on a game that is so complex and consumes a lot of time
, unlike slot and roulette games that are not time consuming . the answer is simple, there are no addict in chess game.

The thing is, chess is more calculative and even though sports games is more of skill based games it’s hard for one to easily place a bet and make a winning without them having to know more things about the game, unlike slot game as well which deals with more of chances without you knowing when the next winning would come.

When this situation is created, the gambler will be able to get out of the symptoms of addiction, chess is a game of chance and it is a long-term game, so gamblers do not show interest in betting. More people bet on games that can be won in a short time because they can win with a little research, especially most people become restless in gambling to establish their own dominance and they are the ones who face addiction.
New gamblers They try to bet by participating in gambling games and lose a lot of money to win, but in chess, a new gambler will not be able to win because chess is not a game of guesswork.

You're right, but generally, chess is not a gambling game, it's just that sometimes people may make bets on games of chess just like how people make bets in any other sports game, but when we talk about casino games, chess don't fall into that category but it's a card game which could be said it is a sport as well, chess is also considered an esports game, and they also have a chess segment and competition at the Esports World Cup, which was recently held in Paris, France, and Magnus Carlsen won and became the world champion.

Anyway, I don't think anyone would disagree with your observation. I also think that one of the biggest reasons why one gets addicted to a casino game is because they know that there is a possibility of them making a lot of money very quickly, and as you said, chess requires a lot of time, and this is also why I said it is basically just like sports betting, because just like how you make a bet on a football game, and then you have to wait until the game ends to find out whether you won or lost, in chess, the case is basically similar to that.

It can never be said that there is no addiction to chess. We do not understand the addiction to chess because not everyone can play chess. Many people may be aware of chess but very few people know about the process of playing chess and how to checkmate in chess, which is why we do not see many people playing chess and if you look at the two of them who can play chess, you will see that most of them are addicted. I am not just saying this based on assumptions, I am saying this based on observing the chess players around me who spend most of their free time playing chess.

My mother always says something about chess, that chess is played by a person who is intelligent and has a lot of understanding and can easily identify the next move of others. I have never seen chess as an addictive game and I think I never will. Because since I was a child, I have heard this about chess from my mother and I have tried many times myself but I could not understand chess properly. It seems to me that a person who considers chess as an addiction or becomes addicted to chess can become addicted to any work. It seems to me that playing chess is just like playing football.

Game has to involve luck in order to be played in casinos and to be addictive too.
I won't believe on the contrary that there are people who are addicted to playing chess but maybe those persons are not just online because those games are not offered by casinos. People can be addicted to good things too, such that they do it excessively that it starts affecting other activities in their lives.
Because for instance, will you say someone who plays chess the most of their day neglecting other activities that they can engage in, is not addicted to playing chess? Yes to play chess for the most of the day is very mentally demanding but there are people who can pay the mental demands for it, they are addicts too.

I have not seen people going crazy betting on this game, but earlier people were very interested in it, but now this thing has decreased. Although it is played in gambling and there is a lot of profit from it, people get addicted to it. The tendency to gamble can be reduced only by investing less capital because when you play with the greed of maximum profit, you will lose and if you do it regularly, you will get addicted, which will make you very addicted. Yes, people play for a game that gives results as soon as possible and for good profit, so that in the time it takes to play chess, a lot can be gained and lost. Chess is a very difficult game and it will not be easy for a common person at all and only those who play tricks in the world can play it. If you want to make profit from gambling, I think you will win very little and Chess is very dangerous for you.

Games that rely on luck are also more likely to become addictive. In chess, there are two players, one of whom makes a move, and the other tries to save himself and stop the other. It is definitely a time-consuming game. Although there is excitement in a game where you have to spend so much time thinking, there is no such thing as addiction. Moreover, other games have a deep relationship with luck, but in chess, the one who has more intelligence usually wins. That is why we do not see this game included in casino gambling platforms. It is not logical to say completely that there is no addiction in chess, but in most cases, we can usually see more addiction in those games where the game ends in a short time and the outcomes are random.

Chess requires so much mental strategy and strength because the players can sit for almost 6-7 hours enduring high level of intense pressure which is exactly why majority of people don’t pay much attention to chess leading to a low level of awareness of the game because sometimes popularity matters a lot in terms of how people jump into any game. The reason why football betting is regarded as one of the most sports related gambling addiction is as a result of its popularity to major parts of the world which brought about high engagement of the game.

Yes, chess can breed addiction but far less than gambling. We can't compare a game actively played by player with one merely watched. Phiscal and mental games like football, cricket and chess give genuine pleasure, player may want to play more for pleasure but they don't cause real addiction for players.

while games that doesn't need brain to play which is slots, roulette or plinko make people addicted because they give people hope of more instant profit not like Chess that make peoples mind exhausted.

You already mentioned some of the things I wanted to give in response to this post but I will just add a few points to suport you. Like you said, chess is such a game that embodies discipline and high mental power, for you to be very good in chess, you must have conquered your adrenaline rush, and have cultivated high level of self control, hence, it is not always possible to act impulsively as a chess player. Everyone love chess but not everyone can master the game to the point of being confident to make it a gambling habit.

Chess is what I call a game of skills and not luck which is why the best will always be the best. It's quite complicated and cannot end fast especially, when two pros are on seat. This makes it not easily played over and over again. You cannot get addicted to chess because it's not a vice but a game of high reasoning, just as you cannot get addicted to any sport as the participant. You more you play, the better you become. There some chess tournament that prizes are given to the winners. Chess players can gamble within themselves.

I believe the nuances lie in the fact that the game of chess could become addictive but it's not the same addiction as gambling. The competitive and rewarding feedback encourage players to continue playing, studying, analyzing games, and striving for an improved rating, potentially for hours at a time. Rewards are another way to motivate but don't make chess a game of chance. It is possible to enjoy playing chess without wagering anything. I would not claim that chess can't be addictive, but rather other risks and mechanisms at play than in casino gambling.
Yea, the fact is that if you don't see anyone to play Chess with, your urge will reduce because it's not possible to play alone. Gambling is what you have access to any time, any day because online casinos are open 24/7. This makes it very easy for you to get addicted to gambling especially, when you are solemnly gambling for profit.

Do you mean online or offline chess, bro? But regardless of whether it’s online or offline, the basics of this game are essentially the same. You’re right, OP it’s quite complicated to play because it requires a lot of mental energy, so it’s not one of my favorite games either.

The bottom line is that the outcome of a game like chess is determined by skill and decision making. Simply put, when you lose, you have to go back and devise a strategy from scratch, and that’s exhausting. Meanwhile, in gambling, there’s no effort or hard work involved in the process the outcome is determined by uncertainty, and this sparks a sense of curiosity rooted in hope. That’s roughly how I see the difference.

I’ll share my opinion - my personal opinion. To start with, I’ve been playing chess since I was 5, my uncle got me into it, back in the days of the USSR, he was a fairly strong grandmaster there.
For me, chess is the BEST tool for training the brain and developing critical thinking. Moreover, chess teaches you to model a multitude of possible scenarios for how events might unfold and to make plans based on those probabilities. In other words, it’s a highly intellectual sport. It requires a certain mindset, constant practice, studying other people’s games and their outcomes, analysis, and so on. All your actions are focused on the RESULT, not on money. What’s valuable there is the complexity of the victory, the combinations, and the unconventional solutions - money is secondary.
I have always wanted to learn how to play the game of chess. People who play the game in my neighbourhood are respected because only a few people could pay the price of mastering it. I don't have the time now since my focus is on other things. I have always encouraged young people to pick interest in the game.

However, chess players could also use the game as a means of gambling. If this happens, the focus might change from the fun of victory to making money.

This is one of the best games ever invented! If you have the chance, I highly recommend checking it out and playing it! It’s hard to find a better workout for your brain and logic.
Plus, it doesn’t require any special conditions or setting. I’ve had a small travel chess set since I was a kid, the pieces are magnetic so you can play in a car or on a train.

First of all, gamblers prefer something that's easier for them or you can say a game that doesn't really require critical thinking, the game if chess isn't as easy as other casino games because it requires a certain level of skill, playing just a round of this and either ending up winning or losing would definitely take time and a lot of gamblers don't have that patience. It is a game of skill, if you don't know how to play the game there's nothing you can do to win.

I would not say we do not have any addicts in chess but what I would say is that they are not as many as they are in other sports games or casinos games. There are gamblers that will be only attracted to chess games and only play them, I know someone who is crazy about chess that he can not go a day without playing it every time and he can bet money that you will not win him. I have even seen him challenging the computer that he is playing against on his mobile phone and almost won the computer he is playing against. Not everyone will like chess as not everyone has the skills to play it like the professional.

From what I've seen, it seems there are chess addicts out there. At my university, I had a couple of friends who were always playing chess. They didn't go out for anything; all their time was spent at the chess club. Many times they didn't even go to class, they only showed up for the exam.

Yes, they're people who grasp the game very quickly, and since it was a club, they were equipped with their clocks. But once I went there, and it was like a party. They were talking, some were silent, but the more experienced players were teasing each other, but in a good-natured way. To me, they were chess addicts.

Do you think the nature of chess can breed addicts?

Imo, chess can also make people addicted. Because what’s called addiction doesn’t have to be about money, but also about the time spent and being overly obsessed. So if someone plays chess excessively, that can also be called an addiction even if it doesn’t actually harm their finances, especially if someone gets addicted to chess to the point that it affects their sleep, work or social relationships. This is similar to someone being addicted to games.

So I think addiction can exist in chess too, it’s just that there aren’t many cases because it doesn’t involve money, unlike people addicted to slots and so on. The difference is that chess addiction is much rarer and usually easier to control because chess requires high mental effort and doesn’t offer instant random wins like slots, so the strong urge that forces someone to keep playing without stopping is much less in chess.

Chess is a game of skill, where you have to think about the moves of 16 pieces, and a game can take up to an hour or more to complete. And so the chances of getting addicted to this game are very low, and besides, it is quite exciting without the financial stakes involved. I think people tend to get addicted to things that are quick to produce results, and that is why people don't get addicted to chess easily. And since it is a game of skill, not everyone is good at chess, and there are even many who have never played chess, so there is very little betting on this type of game.

Yes, indeed, playing chess doesn't lead to gambling addiction... 🙋

I explain it this way: the thought process itself is very energy-intensive. The energy expenditure of brain function is so great that the brain actively avoids thinking. The human brain is generally prone to laziness. If it can avoid thinking, it will avoid thinking. Chess is a game that requires thinking. Therefore, playing chess doesn't lead to the development of gambling addiction. The brain actively suppresses the process of developing chess addiction (the brain doesn't want to work).

It's also important to consider the fact that there's no room for chance in chess. If I lose a game, I can't justify it by saying that a black cat crossed my path that morning or that I spilled salt. My loss is always due to a lack of intelligence, attention, and willpower. This realization has a profound impact on self-esteem. Therefore, gambling addiction doesn't develop... People don't want to constantly be convinced of their stupidity. 🧖
