Funding: Passive Yield or a Full-Time Job?

Funding strategies are often described in a very simple way:

Find an attractive funding rate → build a position → collect funding payments.

On paper, it almost sounds passive.

But once you try to manage a funding strategy manually, one thing becomes clear:

Collecting funding may look passive. Managing the strategy definitely isn't.

And that raises an interesting question.

Can funding-based strategies become accessible to regular users without requiring them to become professional derivatives traders?



Why Does Funding Exist?

Let's start with the mechanism itself.

Funding rates exist in perpetual futures markets.

Unlike traditional futures contracts, perpetual futures have no expiration date. Periodic payments between market participants help keep perpetual contract prices relatively close to the underlying spot market.

When positioning becomes heavily biased toward longs, longs will typically pay shorts.

When the imbalance shifts in the opposite direction, the direction of funding payments can change.

The source of funding is therefore relatively straightforward:

But having funding payments available and building a sustainable strategy around them are two very different things.



On Paper, the Strategy Looks Simple

When evaluating a strategy, people usually calculate direct costs.
