Honestly I think that’s actually the whole point. “No wagering” sounds like free money but it really isn’t that simple, basically the casino is betting on most people coming back to play or deposit more. If you can take the bonus cash out and walk away you might actually come out ahead. But for most people the bonus is probably just another way to keep them playing.

The whole stuff is more psychological. People may not show first hand interest in a casino because of how saturated the space is so they need a more engaging opportunity that's why these bonuses are very important. Most people even end up losing the bonus which is a win win for the casino regardless too.
Some people do not understand what casino bonuses are, they are just a means the casino is saying thank you for your money spend on our site and let us give you little back so that you might probably also lose it again. The second are the ones used to attract new gamblers into their site and they have conditions that will let most of the people lose the bonuses. The bonuses are just a way for the gambling site to attract their customers and more new customers.
I see bonus as a means to keep the gambler loyal to the casino and to also attract new gamblers. If a new casino is giving out bonus to their newly registered members, it's a good marketing strategy because some gamblers will always go for it. Of course, I don't think that your bonus was given to you in order for you to cash it out but just to have fun and keep playing till it's all gone. However, gambling when you didn't make any deposit is encouraging.

I won't consider myself a bonus hunter, but I rarely take bonuses, apart from the fact that their requirements are sometimes way too difficult and the rewards at the end of the day are too small for one to take such a risk or do such a task.

I do realize that these companies can't just be handing out free money to people, they are using it as a marketing strategy and as such I have completely remove my mind and the few ones I take are using just for the fun of it because at the end of the day even if you manage to get something big the limit they would set will not enable you to take all of it to yourself.
I agree with you because if gamblers begin to chase after promotions and bonuses, there becomes an invincible line that separates the emotions such that the gambler might have to experience and there the mathematical edge that is already a result of the expected value over the long course of this action. Although it's a good marketing strategy, but it shouldn't be the goal for the gambler.

If a gambler can get the promotions and bonuses they are after early on or by sheer luck, they should be grateful, otherwise chasing or hunting after promotions or bonuses might just become a huge emotional and psychological impediment, that makes the promotions or bonuses become a high margin probability to attain with much funds and time wasted and as you said, one might not even be able to withdraw it all.

Very good and interesting reading.
I already knew where rakeback and chas back money came from, it is basically a sacrifice by the casino in order to keep people hooked, so they can continue to spend money and deposit more. Casinos see such benefits for gamblers as an investment, which will eventually give them even more money.
Though, I did not know about the terms and conditions on the maximum profit one could have with free spins, perhaps because I am not the kind of person who actively seek to get bonuses on any chance I have to...

Hopefully this thread will help many newbies to understand that for each dollar the casino seems to be giving for free, they are getting in average much more than a single dollar.

This is a business, after all.

The part about the marketing platform doing its job when a person goes back and spends their rake back and then deposits more and keeps playing is definitely exactly what they want. The casinos though do have that one option I am a huge fan of in that no terms and conditions option! This was a great read must have taken a while to type up great work OP

That was a long read, but it was worth it. Thank you, @DrBeer.

They are not a charity. Let's accept that as early as possible. There's a chance to win, but it's very slim. Also, if a gambler wins, walking out is the best thing to do and never going back. It will keep you a winner. Long-term gambling will just make you lose all those profits, and thinking that there's possibly more to win is the worst thing we will do.

All the bonuses that were stated have a purpose. They didn't give them out because they're a good company. If they can urge a gambler to keep on playing, the bonuses did the job.

I'm generally the player who doesn't hunt bonuses but enjoys them when qualifed for one.

I certainly agree that casinos are buying our bets. Part of their operation cost is to provide enticing bonuses and cashbacks and free spins. They're willing to spend money for players to come to them. There's tight competition in the market.

But they're not selfless and generous and kind; they're simply investing money. The ultimate goal is profit. And besides, these bonuses are well protected with stringent rules you would think they're offered but not a single cent would be given away.

We generally view bonuses as “traps” or consider their terms impossible to meet, but from a casino’s perspective, it can sometimes make sense to give users the chance to win money out of nowhere. All of the casinos that are popular right now spent a fortune on advertising and bonus promotions before they became popular. You don’t just use these offers and forget about them right away. It’s quite likely that you’ll return to a casino that has helped you make money in some way. Casinos offer these bonuses with that in mind.

I agree with this. I think the interesting part is that a bonus doesn't necessarily have to be profitable for the casino on its own. It can be an acquisition cost.
If a casino gives a player $20 in free spins and that player later deposits $200, the original $20 bonus may have been a very cheap investment. Even if some players take the bonus, withdraw the winnings, and never come back, the overall campaign can still make sense if enough players become regular customers. That's also why I think it's important to separate the bonus itself from the player's behavior after receiving it. A genuinely +EV bonus can exist, but the casino is betting on what happens next.
In the end, the most valuable thing a casino gets from a good bonus isn't necessarily the money from the first deposit - it's a new player who might keep coming back. And that's where the real economics of these promotions become interesting.
No casinos wants to throw their money away so adverts and bonuses are a way to attract gamblers interest on their sites, I don't think that we should worry about these things because if they are not profiting the casinos they won't advertise their casinos and offer any bonuses. Adverts shows visibility and bonuses shows that a casino is welcoming and wants to give extra rewards to encourage gamblers to remain on their site, remember that on the long run most of us loses more than what we win so it's a win for the casinos because they will recover their adverts and bonuses. Bonuses are traps only for gamblers who hunts for it, as much as bonuses are a plus in casinos I believe that we should focus more on using our own money to gamble.

I don’t think reputable casinos use bonuses as traps to lure unsuspecting users to their site for the slaughter. Maybe some of the fly by night sites, but not reputable ones. For reputable casinos these sorts of bonuses are a form of advertising. A cost they pay to try and grow their business. That’s all.

I agree that it is too much to say that the bonuses and other promotional offers by the casino are traps, but it is established that promotions, bonuses, rewards are the ammunition of the casino to lure gamblers into playing on their platform.

So we can think the reason behind why these casinos are advertising their giveaways?  They are giving away giveaways, bonuses, and other promotions simply because they wanted people to get interested on their platform, play and stay playing.  I do not think there is any other reason why casinos offer these rewards.

Consider those bonuses as a "free bet" that casino gives you for being active in their platform. It is a simple form of them giving something back to the players rewarding their loyalty. I see the ongoing bonuses, daily, weekly and monthly as simply a "free bet" that the casino gives back to their players. Most people lose it instantly these monthly bonuses which are the biggest yet some are very intelligent putting it all on sport bets and making it a big amount of money.

Or simply other form of Return to Player that base on the overall income of the casino. Big casino especially those who have huge number of gamblers usually have much lower percentage of this bonuses due to the volume of player they are giving back compared to small casino that can manage to offer exaggerated amount.

I agree on how most of these bonuses being spent since I personally spent it the same way. Most of the time it returns back to the casino after I wager it immediately on casino games.

Due to this small amount, gamblers just wager it away instead of withdrawing it.

Maybe people are just to frustrated that they struggle to hit the wager requirements, that's why they think the casino just give that bonuses to trap them.

Well we can't deny that this is happening on other scam casino, but if they choose to play on top rated casinos there's good chance that they won't feel that way.

That bonuses and other promotions they made is just part of their marketing tactics. They use that to attract new players and me their existing gamblers choose to stay.

What people also need to understand is those casino is just doing a business. They provably don't want to experience bonus abuse, this is the reason why they put a challenging requirements. to make sure that their legitimate players could able to enjoy those offers they give and also they won't experience any massive exploits.

Part 3. Why Does the Casino Give These Bonuses in the First Place?
This is where we get to the main answer to the question in the title.
The casino does not necessarily need to make money from every individual bonus.
It looks at the entire player pool and what those players do after receiving the bonus.
Imagine two players.
The first receives 50 free spins, wins $30, withdraws the money, and never comes back.
The second receives the same 50 free spins, wins $30, makes a deposit, and keeps playing for several more days.
From the casino's perspective, these are two completely different players in economic terms.
That is why a bonus can be profitable even if some players actually take the money and leave with a profit.
The operator is not only calculating the cost of the bonus itself. It is also estimating how likely the player is to continue playing, make a deposit, and generate additional wagering volume.
That is why an individual player can consistently win from bonuses while the overall bonus program remains profitable for the casino.

Which player are you in this equation?

- The bonus hunter who carefully reads the Terms & Conditions, calculates the EV, and only takes offers that are genuinely profitable?
- The realist who understands casino math and sees cashback as a discount on the cost of entertainment?
- Or the classic degen who withdrew $20 from free spins and then deposited $200 of their own money back into the casino the next day?

We've roughly figured out whose side the math is on.

But whose side are you on?

Share your honest stories, calculations, and thoughts in the comments.

What an interesting and informative piece, you've really covered most of the aspects of bonuses and show the scale to which casino companies are working. I'd hazard that this all works because probably 95%+ of people are definitely not bonus hunters who take the money and run, so the casinos are banking hard on the people who 1) make a first deposit, burn their welcome bonus and deposit never to return or 2) burn through the welcome bonus but continue to deposit long term for maybe years into the future. The last one is the holy grail, the whale, for casinos and these people can often end up handing over a large portion of their income each month.

Some other aspects that weren't included (and maybe aren't necessary): these bonuses are often one and done type setups as a welcome teaser only, but they can make the first session much longer with greater chances to hit big wins that draw a player back. The most generous bonuses are often the worst paying, like $500 deposit matching, but you must burn your cash first and hit a rewager threshold to unlock. Lastly, the terms can often be very strict - say with sports betting only your very first wager applies and it must fall within the terms or the bonus will be void.

That’s all.

Well, why not? Marketing and advertising are still a thing, and the idea itself is completely logical and appealing for establishments like these. It’s like, for example, bank ads offering extra interest on deposits or certain financial perks. The question is, to what extent do we understand this, and what is the funding model for such campaigns?

" Suppose a casino offers you 30% cash back. That does not necessarily mean it will return 30% of all your losses. "

Actually that's exactly what it means. You deposit 100$, play and lose it all, you will get 30$ back, plain and simple. Sure, if you got like let's say 2$ rake back then you will get back 30% of 98$, but if you lost that rake back as well you are back to a net loss of 100$ which will pay back 30$.

Problem is, those numbers only get paid when you have a VERY high VIP level. I have over 11 million wager on stake and only get 15% loss back.
Often you see number between 5-10%, which is basically just a tiny amount back, which players most likely will lose right back anyway.

In the end, what I don't like is the big statement of "up to 30% cashback and blabla", we see this here all the time with many casinos. This UP TO is essential since they advertised the highest number which in most cases will only be paid when you are at the very highest VIP level, which often means you must have wagered at least 100 million. It's kinda falls advertisement with a little bit of truth inside. Yet, terrible behavior.

Conclusion
Casinos are not charities.

Damn, bro, you opened my eyes! World will never be the same after that!  Grin

Which player are you in this equation?

- The realist who understands casino math and sees cashback as a discount on the cost of entertainment?
- Or the classic degen who withdrew $20 from free spins and then deposited $200 of their own money back into the casino the next day?

I would say that I prefer something in between the first and second, if bonus hunting could be excluded. Pure bonus hunting is a degenerate activity that, firstly, cannot provide any serious profit, and secondly, ruins your reputation and creates problems even if you actually win. I sometimes use rakebacks, but I almost always avoid deposit bonuses and anything like that. I'm a bettor, so it's enough for me to hunt for profitable odds and calculate EV.

An interesting topic for discussion! I think that from an online casino perspective, free bonuses are essential to help players familiarize themselves with the casino interface and get used to it. 🙋

For online casino founders, this is actually quite a challenge. Every internet user has millions of different websites to choose from (not just online casinos, but also many other entertainment sites). How do you convince people to visit your website? In the 21st century, people's attention is the most valuable resource.

Any website, even the simplest one, requires a certain amount of time for users to learn its interface. If a user can't figure out the site's interface in a short time, they will leave forever and never return...

Free bonuses solve this problem! When playing at an online casino, users study the site's interface, spending a certain amount of time on it. As a result, that site becomes one of the few on the internet whose interface they have thoroughly studied. In practice, this is often enough to turn users into regular customers of the online casino.💁
I think essential is the right way to put it, and your first point is actually relevant to the second point in many ways. Unfortunately development of user interfaces has taken a toll over the years because there has been a lot of chasing of unique or innovative designs which look good but are hard to use. And since there is an unreasonable fear of similarity, many websites overall have taken all kinds of design approaches that were not necessary and which increase complexity. Let's take a simple example where this problem is not even that strong. If you want to use this forum you need to get familiar with this interface, if you want to use Reddit, Facebook or X then you have to learn the interface and settings each time and these are just 4 websites which are for posting things and discussing. I do believe that free spins and bonuses are quite useful for resolving the negative impact that interface overloading has caused on the people.

On the other hand now relating more to your second point, the casino business is very profitable and has become very competitive. In that kind of situation then the marketing teams of the casinos start to compete with each other which results with better bonuses and deals for the players. Overall we see markets where the competition is very fierce as good, because that improves what the customer gets. The risk comes mostly from shady casinos or those that try to manipulate the terms in bad ways to trick the player. Casinos must have certain limitations and terms for many reasons, but as long as they are fair that is a good thing.

For reputable casinos these sorts of bonuses are a form of advertising. A cost they pay to try and grow their business. That’s all.
I think that's what most casinos run promotions and give out bonuses, it's all a marketing tactic to attract new gamblers to their platform, and they hope that the new players who are joining them will stay with them, and this is where the quality of the casino is tested, because a gambler or a customer will only stay loyal to your business if they find everything convincing, and for this, a casino has to provide every gambler with great services, so that they don't think of using other platforms. And this is what increases the competition so much within the gambling space because every other platform would want to have the best possible services so that their customers don't go elsewhere.

This also creates competition in running promotions and bonuses, because the marketing team of every casino will always be thinking of coming up with new promotions and bonuses on every possible occasion to keep their already existing gamblers engaged, and also allow newcomers to stay with them as I described above. By the way, I don't think using the word "lure" has anything wrong in it, because it basically means the same, because casinos run these promotions to tempt gamblers, and that is exactly what luring is.

Well, it is not a mystery that in order to bring liquidity irnos important to invest some of one's liquity.
Those whales and deep pocket gamblers are the minority within this market, so they will definitely just go for casinos which have the most to offer in exchange of their deposits and volume.

Though, bonuses and rakeback are not everything. Depending on the amount of deposits, there will be big gambler who would not risk their money on smaller casinos instead of depositing in renewed one's, even if the smaller ones offer benefits.

Reputation and reliability are priceless in a sea of shady services.

It sounds a bit like AI-generated text, but if you don't quibble, there's nothing special about these bonuses. I always say they're the equivalent of simple advertising. Effective advertising is expensive. And it directly takes money from your budget, while the return on advertising is often zero. Bonuses directly encourage people to play, create a pleasant experience, and make them think the casino is a source of free lunches for players. One can only be happy for a casino that can create such effective illusions.

I agree with the marketing part, but not the luring part. I see these offers as a form of advertisement, and as you've rightfully said, advertisements do cost money. But I don't think casinos are necessarily losing from these offers though - maybe at the initial stage, but when it kicks off they'll be in profit. I see it as a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. And in most cases, you'll have to deposit to be eligible to such bonus; more often, gamblers do lose the bonus and have to start using their deposited funds.

That's why I said, I don't agree with the luring part. Marketing, afterall, was meant to lure customers, maybe not necessarily for the slaughter, but in this case I believe they're hoping the customers are slaughtered Cheesy - that's how the casino makes their money afterall.
