Making them comfortable is the right thing to do and I am not saying you did bad but we often mistaken that they are cured when we see some changes because if they actually got into depression then it is going to be a long recovery process so if we thought they are fine now and treat them just like everyone then they are just a triggering point away from having suicidal thoughts.
You're taking it too far, quite seeing you speak from the heart, it's true, and geographically right, but here in Africa, we may have lost every other thing to the westerners, but community. We have a strong community of people, it'll be hard to run out of people to talk to, unless you don't want to talk to anybody. Over here, depressed people stand a great chance of recovery; families, churches, school mates, etc are always there to check up on people, and someday, somehow, you'd see the depressed person starts talking. Funny enough, I once read on paper that the high sunlight in Africa helps to drop the rate of depressed people.
Maybe there is huge cultural differences that can act as a support system and can save people from very bad situation which is good but what I am saying is that we should not consider those as solution rather a support system with the actual treatment procedure. Such as when someone is addicted to alcohol or drugs some of the people suggest them holy ways which we all know is not going to help them and the same way we should treat the depression too.

People take time to understand, but this sadness of depression is different from the natural one. Its a strong sadness, comes a emptiness, seems like nothing makes sense, a pain, will to cry, comes the thought of getting rid of all that once and for all. This is not natural, the person should go to therapy but as they cant even leave the house it gets difficult. For these people who feel guilty and failed nothing makes sense.
Depression or phobia has to seek help from specialist.

In our world today, we have lots of depressed people living life like nothing is wrong. Depression can be as a result of many things like loneliness, financial pressure, peer pressure, stress and many others. Depressed people don't even speak up because the society don't place importance on it. Depression is real and we all go through it at different points in life. My question is why aren't we talking so much about depression and how to manage and help depressed people?

Depression has become the new norms, thanks for your keen observation. I have seen many depressed people living like nothing happened. They are so used to depression that they won't know that they are depressed and neighbours are also depressed that they won't be able to figure out when someone is depressed.

I have this neighbour that got no peace of mind at home. His wife gives him fire every evening he is back from work. He is rich, but appears like someone who doesn't feed. I have met him absent minded severally in the street.

I am planning to advice him to divorce or get another wife; but I am not used to giving such an advice. I just pray his family, friend or close one will discover and rescue this man. Depression is real.

Are you suggesting going for therapy or going to meet a professional as the adequate way of healing through depression? If yes, I'd have to inform you that there're no differences with what the professionals do for depressed people compared to what their loved ones do at reducing the rate of depression on a victim.

People who are depressed, do they know that they’re depressed ? Why I’m asking this question is because most countries in Africa doesn’t have hospitals where people can afford to check when they’re depressed, many people are depressed and don’t know they’re depressed, the fact that people feel comfortable with themselves being depressed is beyond there imagination that they’re depressed, there are people in Africa who doesn’t know any thing about being depressed.

Mental health is something that should be taken seriously by any individual, before talking about feeling comfortable with depression, we should try and avoid things that would make us depressed, I believe there are situations people would find themselves which are unexpected because of life occurrences, loved once and having therapy sections is an option to create a solution.

I’m mostly going to emphasize on African, there is no adequate medical care, most people in Africa doesn’t know what a therapist does, they don’t know therapy, so how do they get a solution, it should be from family members and loved ones.

I think it’s actually a good thing you’re paying close attention to what’s happening around your environment. There are many people who can live with you in a compound or in a neighborhood but they don’t seem to be very observant of what’s going on within their neighborhood. Another thing that’s also very important is for people who are actually depressed to be able to speak out so people can get to help them. So many people can be going through a lot in the same environment but they don’t get help from their neighbors simply because they can’t speak up. Depression have a way of making those who are depressed to quietly absorb pains which is really not good. And most people also finds it difficult to approach those who they’re presumably thinking they’re depressed because they are afraid of what their response will be.

We are in one of the most difficult time since huma history both economical and security-wise which has contributed to depression in people, depression is very bad experience and it has contributes to unhealthy, unhappy and unsafe society but talking about how this people can be reached is not only a thing of government but individuals, companies. Foundations can be established to assist the less privileged.

One of the major factor causing depression is inability to communicate to the right persons when going through challenges as you mentioned loneliness, financial pressures, inequalities and death of love ones or even absence of love from partners. Honestly speaking, when people are depressed nothing moves them anymore and they can't contribute effectively to their self or the society we live in. I think if government and civil societies can create agency and support to reach out to this people in needs or emotional downplay as individuals, it will go a long way in reducing suicidal and untimely death caused by depression.

I know that not everyone will be comfortable with depression, but the challenge is that many are not keeping away from the things that cause depression by what they are doing. We need to make some adjustments to make things workout especially when we feel there is an abnormality going on with us. Once you are depressed, you lack confidence to face the future ahead of you.
The whole one is praying to be depressed, but I want you to understand that depression it's a life of his own that appears to anyone without even that particular person noticing, sometimes this life is just somehow because they will come a time when there is nothing in this world that will make you happy, nobody want to be depressed, so it comes naturally when we are in some certain situation that will think it is above us, avoiding all this issues is always very difficult because so far as we are still living, we will continue to get involved in issues like this, this is just a matter of Survivor.

Being able to speak out is a very strong way to overcome depression. Because, depression has a way of making someone think that if they speak out, no one will believe them or help them and this will may make them to either take their lives by committing suicide or take action that won't be of help to them. And most people have live their lives being very nonchalant, that means they only care about themselves in this world, that they pay no attention to helping others and that may make one who is depressed not to ask for help. But, if one shows that they care, they may be more willing to help without waiting for them to ask first.

Is better you speak out first even though no one really help at the end, this is because if anything goes wrong without you speaking out the blames will all be on you saying that you didn't speak out for help in the first place, and how them will people know what you were going through, people have a way of shifting blames, and some times too help can come where you never expected and is wrong to conclude that no one will help. Truth be told nothing really worth taking our life for regardless of whatever the circumstances maybe it shouldn't be the end of your life.

I don't think this is true. It's now that people are talking about depression. Now people take depression seriously. In the past, depression was like a thing that only affected weak people, but now, more people are beginning to understand that it was a misconception. Now people are beginning to speak and ask for help when they are depressed. I understand it's still not a very common concept, but it's a lot better than it used to be.

The problem we still have today is a misconception that "rich people shouldn't be depressed". When people see a rich person complaining about something in their life, they make it seem like the rich person is not human. People forget that money or fame doesn't take away emotions, and rich and famous people still feel all kinds of emotions that normal people feel. Anybody can be depressed, man, woman, rich, poor, anybody.

Because, depression has a way of making someone think that if they speak out, no one will believe them or help them and this will may make them to either take their lives by committing suicide or take action that won't be of help to them.
When you see that telling what you're going through to a third party will lead you to being judge or that people no longer understand what's called confidentiality, the best option most depressed people resort to is to keep things to themselves because an average person out there is all about himself. Bur here's the take, if you carry all the burden by yourself and it leads to suicide, who looses? Isn't it you and your loved ones? Who carries the hurt? Are you not the one? This is why regardless of how people are, you still need someone to talk to because no man is an island. Everyone is going through one thing or the other some of which are worse than the situation you're passing through. If some of them don't open up to you, you wouldn't know.

Life's not easy anywhere. If everybody allows it, we will all be depressed. Those that are still standing have only made a result that they are going to push through it all till death.

I think one major reason why people don’t talk about depression enough is because many people see it as weakness or something that people can easily overcome. Many people today are suffering silently because they are afraid that people will judge them rather than to  listen to them.

We really need to understand that depression is a very big issue, and everyone can experience it, irrespective of their financial status or their backgrounds. When you listen, show genuine care to someone it can make a big difference.

It is people that are depressed that can helped themselves, but there are some cases that the situation is very worse. Like someone that life is not favoring at all can be depressed, but for it not to lead to death or bad things, it is not an easy thing than the person to think positively and know that there is hope if there is life.
It is very easy for someone to always give advice to depressed people to speak up until one gets depressed but chooses not to talk to anyone about their problems. I think one of the reasons why depressed people find it difficult to speak up when they are in a terrible situation is because they feel the person they share their problems with may use it against them, and they choose to be private, just hoping that they can solve their problems by themselves. The best way to overcome depression is by speaking up because this gives others room to bring solutions to the problem. Depression is very deceptive; it gives people the impression that their problems can be solved by themselves, and this is how people die slowly.

The world is becoming more cruel which is one of the reasons why depression can be totally eradicated cause different things would keep occurring which would triggered emotions that leads to depression, thngs like wars, inflation, natural disasters and so on. In my locality, the thing that would mostly cause people to be depressed is poverty, the high level of inflation is really an issue and many people are finding it tough to survive.
That's why i find time to reach out to friends, family/extended ones when I can cause people are going through lots and if you don't check on them to know what's wrong or how they're fairing you might never know how depressed they're, we should normalize the habit of reaching out to people, interact and encourage them if they're not okay.

Depression got nothing on a person like me who is energetic and a vibe on my own. I promise you the only time I have experienced such in my life has got to be the year when I lost my mother to the cold hands of death asides that, an energetic mother fvcker like me can not be depressed. I live a simple life and I do not get pressured whenever I see pictures of my guys at the current stripper parties, travelling or purchasing stuffs I can not get yet.

It took me a year though until I was clear of that depression. It is gratitude to the good people in my life, football competition I was involved in and books I read these periods that kept my spirit alive. I was always chasing a purpose and energetic before the depression but gratitude to God and these mentions, I think I've found my smile back but that ache of losing someone I love will never go away.
Nothing hits harder than losing someone dear to your heart. The loss of a mother can be disheartening to accept as reality. Thank God you came out of the depressed mood you felt after the loss of your dear mother.

I pray that this energetic and vibrant behavior you found within yourself this past time will continue, not to be taken away from you all of a sudden by the death of a loved one. Depression will not be our portion, nor that of those people around us.

I will advise: let's learn to speak out when depressed. We should be kind to people and mind the words we say to them because every one of us is facing battles we know nothing of. They need kind words to stay strong

well I don't really blame those who keeps quiet in the state of depression sometimes, it might be as a result of how they where treated earlier before that made them to change there attitude on how they share there experience with people and the response they get in return may not be encouraging to them. So to them now keeping quiet seems to be the best solution, but it is not.
Silent makes depression worse and it makes people in such condition feelike like there life's waste and everything about them is wrong.
What are you saying, although I understand you but hopping up remain the best option that could bring solution to the situation you find yourself (depression) no matter what it is, share it with people, infact as soon as you share it with people, you will get some relief, so do you prefer it when, someone is depressed and decide not to open up to people, hope you know that depression makes people think abstract, it makes one lose his or her sense of reasoning, have you ever think why most depressed individuals commit suicide? Is it not because they find themselves in a helpless situation, for anyone that is depressed, it is adviceable for them to talk to people, perhaps a word of advice or simple can bring a total or some level of mind reset.

It's true that depressed people are supposed to open up at some point to their loved ones that they are depressed. But there are some factors we have to consider;
  • Some people are depressed but they are actually not aware and they'll continue to muscle it. This set of people are not going to open up because they are not aware they are depressed.
  • Some people have low self esteem, and they feel that if they speak out about depression, their status would be reduced to zero.
  • Some depressed people are made to believe that they cannot live without the situation that depressed them. Hence they'll continue to manage the depression.
My suggested solution is re-orientation of mind and beliefs.

Ignoring depression isn't even an issue. Our brains are not built to handle this modern trend of things, we sit in the comfort of our homes to see every trending event through our mobile phones. All the wars, negative tragedies and even the global economic crisis is at our finger tips 24/7, Coupled with the fact that most people begins to compare their easy and normal day to day life with the fake ones they see on social media and that world depression has lost it;s value to be taken seriously because in as much as it is a serious medical illness that deals with emotions, these days people use it to describe anything they feel just to get some public sympathy.

In moments of depression like that, it’s really not everyone you talk to, yes, it’s good not to keep things to yourself during time of depression, but it’s also crucial to know who to talk to about it at this point. This is why we have trained and professional psychologists and doctors that are trained specially for treating this kind of issue, at least you’re sure that they’ll neither judge you for it or let the information out since they’re mostly under a sworn oath of confidentiality. And for those who are also married and you trust your partner, they’re also in a great position to talk to, except of course you don’t trust your partner.
