This may sound simple, but have being thinking about it lately. But this will be of importance to anyone getting into Bitcoin. You just having your Bitcoin wallet, is it enough to say that you understand how to protect your BTC ?
Just imagine a beginner downloading a wallet and you can receive in some BTC and making sure you save your  seed phrase in a safe place. But do all this means that you understand what could go wrong ?

Given an example of the seed phrase, do you understand what this seed phrase gives access to ? Are you aware of why you shouldn’t enter it, on website or even share it out to anyone ? Do you understand what will happen if your seed phrase gets lost, connecting of wallet to something malicious, sending you BTC to a wrong address ?

Well I think there is two difference between having wallet and to understand self custody

You can obviously be enjoying using  a wallet for year without having to understand it risks in it, most problems will only be known to you when something goes wrong

So my question to us all is

As a beginner should you first learn the basics of Bitcoin security before using self custody or to use a wallet and be learning along is better ?

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.

Before taking a step into cryptocurrency, try to first encounter bitcoin and know about it network; planning is what you will always need to move on to prevent yourself from being scammed or making a costly mistake in your journey with Bitcoin.

How will you know which wallet to use and which one not to use if you don't learn before investing in Bitcoin? Lack of being informed is part of the reason why so many are losing their coins to diverse reasons they couldn't have afforded to prevent from happening.

Therefore, my best advice for you is to avoid leaping before looking; learning comes before any decision-making.

The Answer is simple, you should learn and understand the basics and little bit of advanced knowledge about wallet security before you start Self Custody and you need to begin Self Custody immediately you start your investment journey.

So you should invest your time and learn about security then ask questions about what you don’t understand on forums like this, so you can get clarity before you start. You should continue learning along the way in your journey but that doesn’t mean you should abandon learning the basics before you start, you can’t learn everything from the start but you need to understand the basics.

This issue in particular has been discussed many times on this forum, so you should as well go through some old discussion to learn more.

Make sure you understand the do's and don'ts of anything you want to go into. If you want to know about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, make sure you read the do's and don'ts. It is very important.

I know what seed phrases and passphrase are when I started. I also know what addresses are.

It was on this forum that I understand about keys.

No, it could go wrong because the beginner might download the wrong wallet with a backdoor which can result in loss of funds. It's important you know the right place to download a trusted wallet which is from its official website. Downloading a non-custodial open source wallet from its official site is the right way to go about it, not just downloading a random wallet.

Yes, because a single mistake can mean total loss of funds. Security of funds is as important as having them.

If there is anything you need to know about Bitcoin wallets as a beginner, it is how to create your wallet, how to use your wallet, and ways of securing your wallet, against external threats and internal threats through malware on your device.

Learning the basics is important, there is a high risk of losing one's assets if the basics are not known, it is very wise for us not to be clueless in whatever we want to associate ourselves with, including Bitcoin, securing what holds our fortune is the best form of preparation as an investor.

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.

"Not your keys not your coin", this statement should be ringing in your head when ever you've to deal with any wallet. firstly as a beginners you must know what wallet is, and what you use them for, you also need to know the differences in the types of wallet. the one's you are fully responsible for and the one's that a third party is involved. in fact wallet security should be the primary thing a beginner needs to learn before even funding their account to avoid either being involved in a compromised system.

I can bet that within a day, you can learn all the basic things that is expected of a beginner before getting started in his investment journey and afterwards you can learn some others that might not be too simple to get at a first look. it s simply how most of the investor got started and wit time, they grew to learn on security an possible ways that hackers and internet fraudsters can get at their asset. we learn more in doing and this is also applicable to investing in bitcoin.

Having a bitcoin wallet and eventually buying bitcoin is the foundation of your investment. if you don't have a bitcoin wallet and aren't holding any bitcoin, then everything you have is just mere head knowledge.

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.

The first thing to know is that if your keys is compromised that your coin is gone. it is simple but very essential in your asset security.

I agree with, One don’t have to be an expert before using self custody. understanding the basic risk is very important. Like for you to protect your seed phrase cross checking of address and getting the right wallet app downloaded this are things as a beginner who should understand early. Then as we continue so learning to continue with us because do more you want to hold Bitcoin you learn everyday.

The very first day I used  a custodial wallet, while creating my address I was asked to write down the seed phrase on a paper and keep it safe away from the reach of anyone except myself and secondly, I was not allowed to take screenshot of the key but instead reminded to write it down in a paper. So, for a new Bitcoiner that is conscious of what they are doing, during address creation, they will likely get a security warning of which if they abide by it, they won't lose their coins.

For someone that can read and understand what they have read, it doesn't take months to learn about the security of your Bitcoin wallet. In a day, you can learn about the importance of keeping your key safe but some beginners are not so concerned about security at first but only focus on buying the Bitcoin. My advice is that the security of your Bitcoin is as important as the amount of Bitcoin you want to purchase, so, always take both serious from the first day.

I assume it was a mistake from your end whether you didn’t notice or you missed the “non” you were supposed to add before “custodial” because AFAIK Custodial Wallets don’t give Seed phrase and they help you hold your coins meaning you have zero control over it, the Custodial company manages your keys and everything.

And talking about Securing the Seed phrase for beginners, you actually need to understand the good practices of how you can protect your seed phrase from anyone and keeping it in digital form whether on cloud storage or as a screenshot is a bad practice and if you don’t invest your time to understand these things, you might likely copy it on the paper but don’t know how to secure the paper properly and you might end up even misplacing it.

This is just one aspects of security, there’s more to bitcoin security than just Seedphrase even though it is very important that’s the reason why a beginner must learn all these basics before starting.

To answer your question, I don't think that it is ideal to invest in something that you don't any idea about, the reason why a lot of people think that it is unnecessary to gain knowledge about Bitcoin because it is very easy to learn and understand but when they ignore the aspect of learning about Bitcoin they start making wrong decisions.

A lot of times the decisions that they make is influenced by wrong informations that they get, because they have refused to do their own personal research they believe whatever it is that they are being told not knowing the difference between the right and wrong informations.

There is no way you can know how to use wallets without learning or understanding about the basics first, it is important to know know what you are doing before you get started.

Bitcoin might seem to easy (buying and holding) until the person uses and exchange for storage and get hacked or restricted, expose the seed phrase to the internet or scammers or even use a wallet with a weak security like Coldcard. So people shouldn't overlook wallet security and make sure they understand it before buying and holding.

Imagine accumulating lots of Bitcoin for years then lose it in one day or get restrictions from using your coin cause your account was flagged in an exchange. That's what is likely to happen to those who feel wallet security is less important, it's even more important than buying and holding cause that's what ensure what you're buying is safe.

One thing you should know is that wallet is a technical aspect of bitcoin and a brand newbie might find it difficult to understand deep about wallet. What you need to do is to only know about the basics of a wallet and when you have bought your bitcoin, you can start learning deep about the wallet because what is the essence of keep a seed phrase safe without any bitcoin in it. Wallet is practical and not theory. However, you can use testnet bitcoin for praticals.

I was part of the folks who listened to what people said about starting an investment even if you don't know how the blockchain or the technical side of Bitcoin operates. I made that wrong decision, but I have corrected the mistake. I advise anyone starting to join the Bitcoin community to also learn the technical part of it. The investment knowledge is not enough for me because with the technical knowledge, we understand how to safeguard the investment by placing high security on it.

What you said got me laughing, but you actaully made good points, knowing the right wallet, and creating wallet as many has pointed out is not bad, but what if after all that, the person didn't invest, I think you your statement is right and very easy for any one to understand, is just like advicing a newbie to make advance research before starting, I don't want anyone to get me wrong on what I'm about to say, but what if after making the research and the newbie end up not taking any action, I totally support your views that, there is no need of keeping seed phrase in a safe place, when there is no Bitcoin in that particular wallet, I think thats the comment that got me laughing.

As a beginner should you first learn the basics of Bitcoin security before using self custody or to use a wallet and be learning along is better ?
As a beginner, I definitely need to know the basic security of Bitcoin.

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.
When I start new in Bitcoin sector I need to know many things such as what an exchange is and what a wallet is, and how they work and what the differences between them are. I think these few basic things are extremely important for a crypto user to know first because without them, doing anything in the crypto space will put you at risk. Then it is important to know how to safely generate a seed phrase and how to keep the seed phrase secure. And the rest will be learned automatically.

You do not necessarily need to know everything about bitcoin security before buying bitcoin or creating a wallet. There are simple guides and important notice you would take note of while creating a wallet so that should be fundamental to your bitcoin investment journey, as other security measures could come after that. You can learn more about wallet security as you invest in bitcoin, there is no limit to how much security one could learn, either wallet security or security from external attacks.

It's one thing to have a wallet and another to understand self-custody but some people tend not to see the difference. It's possible for one to use a wallet for years and still not fully understand how to actually protect your Bitcoin.

For a beginner, you don't need to master everything before you can start it it's very important for you not to skip the basics. Knowing what a seed phrase is, why it must be protected, how addresses work and what happens when something goes wrong can save you from a very painful lesson later.

So like I've always maintained, learning how to use a wallet is a good start but what's more important is understanding how to keep it safe.

You can learn more about wallet security as you invest in bitcoin, there is no limit to how much security one could learn, either wallet security or security from external attacks.

Bitcoin investment doesn't take you a whole year to know like you are studying a course in the university all you are required to know is the basic knowledge which has to do with what Bitcoin is all about, how to invest and protect your wallet and how to avoid being scammed cause there are so many scammers looking for who to steal from. If you are able to get this basic knowledge then you are good to go then later you can be learning more things whilenl your investing is growing.

Your wallet security is not something that will take you all day so long as you have your local bank account and you know how to guide it from criminals not to get access to your money you can also protect your wallet for scammers not to get access to it , I believe it's very simple if you want to learn.
