You cannot learn everything in one day and you will not be able to gain complete knowledge about it if you do not use it. It is not possible to acquire all the knowledge before using it to use a wallet, you will only be able to acquire basic knowledge and general knowledge. To acquire the rest of the deep knowledge, you must start using that wallet. The more problems you encounter, the more knowledge you will gain. This does not mean that you will wait for problems.

Acquire the knowledge that is required to use a wallet when you need it. We all know that you need to acquire general knowledge about seed phrases, passphrases and private keys to be stored safely. But you will know how to store them safely only when you have the seed phrase. You can develop an idea of Bitcoin transactions by acquiring knowledge, but to learn to transact in reality, you have to transact. That is, I mean, having a wallet is not enough and acquiring knowledge before using a wallet is not enough. You must have a wallet, you must acquire basic knowledge before using the wallet, and you must gradually acquire knowledge while using the wallet. Real and complete knowledge of Bitcoin security is created only while using the wallet.

Actually the real difference here is that using a wallet and understanding wallet security are not the same thing. If you are new, you need to first understand what a seed phrase is and how a malicious link or app can pose a risk. However it is not necessary to learn everything first and then use the wallet. You can learn to use a wallet with a small amount, but before taking a large amount into self custody, it is better to understand and test the entire backup and recovery process yourself. Particularly taking a picture of the seed phrase and keeping it on your phone or in the cloud should be avoided at all costs.

Before taking a step into cryptocurrency, try to first encounter bitcoin and know about it network; planning is what you will always need to move on to prevent yourself from being scammed or making a costly mistake in your journey with Bitcoin.

How will you know which wallet to use and which one not to use if you don't learn before investing in Bitcoin? Lack of being informed is part of the reason why so many are losing their coins to diverse reasons they couldn't have afforded to prevent from happening.

Therefore, my best advice for you is to avoid leaping before looking; learning comes before any decision-making.
How would OP even know if there is a wrong wallet and a right wallet to use, if they are planning on just going online to get their hands on any available wallet them chances are that they will fall into the hands of scammers.
In this business there is no point in wanting a secured wallet if you don't even know what it means for a wallet to be secure, sometimes back i was confused with Custodial and Self custodial, I thought they were the same thing only to later realize they were the very opposites of eachother , if OP is of the same mindset currently then they might end up handing their bitcoin over to a stranger without even knowing it.

You do not necessarily need to know everything about bitcoin security before buying bitcoin or creating a wallet. There are simple guides and important notice you would take note of while creating a wallet so that should be fundamental to your bitcoin investment journey, as other security measures could come after that. You can learn more about wallet security as you invest in bitcoin, there is no limit to how much security one could learn, either wallet security or security from external attacks.
It is not necessary to know everything about Bitcoin security before buying or creating a wallet, because if someone has basic knowledge about these things, then he can buy and deposit Bitcoin without hesitation. However, after the recent hack of hardware wallets like Coldcard, many inexperienced investors are considering the security of their wallet before buying Bitcoin.

A few days ago, Trezor mentioned that their customer information was leaked and is currently being subjected to phishing scams. So it is proven that everyone should try to be aware of the security of their wallet from the start of Bitcoin investment, which will make it easier for us to avoid various frauds by fraudsters, you are right that there is no limit to how much a person can learn about security, so everyone should consider keeping their holdings safe from the start of investment.

So my question to us all is

As a beginner should you first learn the basics of Bitcoin security before using self custody or to use a wallet and be learning along is better ?

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.

How long will it take you to do the basic learning of Bitcoin security? Emphasis on the basic, for me it should not take you too long to understand the very basic of Bitcoin security especially wallet security.
And for me practical learning is the best form of learning, after you must have understood the basic you can hold on from any complicated action on till you have learnt further.

The best way I think a beginner should approach using a Bitcoin wallet is simply by learning on the go. However, certain precautions must be taken so as to not be a victim of the ills that could befall practicing self custody with your precious Bitcoin while still learning how best to manage it.

The seed phrases are the most important keys and should be guarded by all means because a wallet can be lost with a device, but can be redownloaded or bought back but the keys are what can open and prove ownership.
A simple setup is okay as a beginner, no need for complex approach all in the name of security.
What most of us oldies do sometimes to ensure we do not lose our coins is to also send a small amount first to confirm we are sending to the right address, before we send the bulk of our coins to ensure we don't make mistakes.

Lastly, on no account should a beginner brag about their holdings because that's the worst security flaw that can happen when we brag to the wrong ears.

Having a bitcoin wallet is not enough true, sending funds in and out still doesn’t guarantee if a person is well knowledgeable enough to secure their holdings. Learning the basic is not difficult, bitcoin knowledge is broad but, it doesn’t take much time learning how to privatize your bitcoin so an investor can hold and learn at same time. Firstly the wallet choice matters, the important thing is making a good choice of wallet afterwards consider the internet a very dangerous space to share bitcoin informations, like the seed phrase etc, these are primary things to put into consideration before holding bitcoin.

Not quite long ago I came across a thread talking about how a beginner said he has a huge amount of money stuck in his wallet probably because he must have made a mistake with with the seed phrase or something else which is capable of putting his entire asset in jeopardy. learning about the basics first before starting to use wallets would avoid getting anyone into this type of situation that I'm explaining. You need to understand what you are doing first before you can take any Further steps.

The problem with a lot of beginners is that they want to learn rapidly but it doesn't work like that, it is best to take it one step at a time.

Being able to distinguish between Bitcoin wallets is very important, so that we will know the best wallet that suits our usage for privacy and also ensure that we learn about how we could manage the security to our wallet, this will prevent us from making undeliberate mistakes, doing the necessary things like this way indicate that we truly know what we are doing, many make series of mistakes because they don't know what is at stake, we can't take our wallet privacy or decision making with a soft and if we don't want others to take advantage of us and take what belongs to us.

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.

Has to be backing up your seed phrase like everyone else is saying because that's the most important thing about wallet security yet most of us neglect it untill we need it and them we can't remember where we stored it or recall because we can't remember if we did or didn't backup our wallet entirely. I can't remember the name of the wallet but back then in the years of MMM, there was a popular wallet (web wallet) but can't remember the name that I forgot to backup as of then It needed a backup file or my 12 word phrase orr passwords to unlock wallet and I lost some Bitcoins because of my carelessness. I see investors still making similar mistakes today and this brings back old memories. Guess we just have to pass through some life experience to learn lessons that'll keep us smarter as we grow in life.

You seem to know the importance of self custody and Bitcoin security already, so I want to assume that this is a general question for all newbies. Well, ideally, it is important for people to understand the things that they're trying out for the very first time, but again, we as humans don't use the same approach when dealing with things we are unfamiliar with.

Some newbies are actually smart enough to make deep research before trying out a self custodial wallet... Some might be privileged to learn from those that are far knowledgeable and are experienced... while others may have to start using one before fully understanding the basics of security associated with it. Whichever category a newbie falls under, it doesn't make much difference as long as they eventually learn what they ought to have known in the first place.

Many people in the early days didn't take self custody or wallet security seriously but life taught them a lesson that has stuck with them even till date so they don't repeat same mistake again, I don't think there's anyone who experienced your kind of unfortunate situation that won't take wallet security seriously except that person is very careless. That's why i think it's mostly people that are newly into Bitcoin that would neglect something as important as backing up the seed phrase. Although some old guys do make the mistake of backing up in their mails.

That just it, allot of users don’t really take wallet security seriously until they be a need for it, after they then lossing fot themselves. But my advice to everyone out there we shouldn’t wait for this kinds of lessons first before we will now take security seriously.
Taking note of all this little little basic will help to prevent problems. I know that experience is part of the learning  and it teaches also. But learning this basic knowledge now will help to save you from experiencing expensive price.

This may sound simple, but have being thinking about it lately. But this will be of importance to anyone getting into Bitcoin. You just having your Bitcoin wallet, is it enough to say that you understand how to protect your BTC ?
knowing about Bitcoin is a something that has to do with the proper research and dedication people who are dedicated in Bitcoin they are the ones that we know about it, but knowing only bitcoin wallet does not mean that you know about Bitcoin you have to understand the technology that behind the blockchain and it privacy,

when you know how to secure the privacy of your bitcoin that is when you are slightly known about Bitcoin but I haven't only wallet and protect your wallet is not all about things that you should know bitcoin there are other numerous things that you are supposed to understanding bitcoin transactions, do you know that up to now they are people who does not send Bitcoin in Multiple wallet because they have not understand that but that I've been using bitcoin for long time even using bitcointalk forum for long time but they don't know how to send bitcoin to multiple address

Well said but anyone in the forum should alway seize the opportunity to know more about crypto at large and yes wallet is one important thing we ought to focus on while learning our way through all of this but I think with the basic knowledge of cyber security/safety, one should be able to stay off been scammed.

I also support the fact that, learning should always come first before making any decision especially when it's a financial decision involving bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies at large because it is always almost impossible to recover a lost asset.

This may sound simple, but have being thinking about it lately. But this will be of importance to anyone getting into Bitcoin. You just having your Bitcoin wallet, is it enough to say that you understand how to protect your BTC ?
Just imagine a beginner downloading a wallet and you can receive in some BTC and making sure you save your  seed phrase in a safe place. But do all this means that you understand what could go wrong ?

Given an example of the seed phrase, do you understand what this seed phrase gives access to ? Are you aware of why you shouldn’t enter it, on website or even share it out to anyone ? Do you understand what will happen if your seed phrase gets lost, connecting of wallet to something malicious, sending you BTC to a wrong address ?

Well I think there is two difference between having wallet and to understand self custody

You can obviously be enjoying using  a wallet for year without having to understand it risks in it, most problems will only be known to you when something goes wrong

So my question to us all is

As a beginner should you first learn the basics of Bitcoin security before using self custody or to use a wallet and be learning along is better ?

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.

It’s important to know the dos and don’ts of a business you’re getting into and having a basic knowledge you can invest but your learning shouldn’t end there, but rather improve on it.

With the scenario of having a wallet and investing even without knowing all the other details and informations, now you’re invested is an opportunity to want to know more in order to protect what you’ve invested.
So people should never stop learning or wanting to know more, with bitcoin I think you learn everyday, even experts still do researchs.

As a beginner should you first learn the basics of Bitcoin security before using self custody or to use a wallet and be learning along is better ?

And to those that have being using Bitcoin over the years. What is that one thing you wish you understand about wallet security before you start the journey.

There is no point in holding and investing in bitcoin if you don’t know about the security of the network. It is very important that one becomes more familiar with what they want to invest into before jumping into that investment. Self custody itself requires that you know how to safeguard your funds before thinking about building your portfolio. If you’ve made mistake in the security of your funds, you’ll most probably lose everything you’ve accumulated overtime. As you’re happy that your investment is growing, you’re most probably nurturing it for the person who is after your money and not your success in the crypto space.

It is not rocket science and i do not like to give newbies the impression that it is. True, it comes with a lot of responsibilities, but it is something that any newbie can understand in a very short time. The basics are really simple and one doesn't need to be a genius to know what to do if they are pointed in the right direction.

That said, i must admit that bitcointalk made the learning process smooth for me, i can only imagine people trying to learn about bitcoin from information they get online and in social media, they would be unable to filter what's right from rubbish. On that note, if you are going to talk to anyone about bitcoin, it is pertinent you tell them about bitcointalk too.

People's level of understanding differs, for instance in an examination, some get very good grades while some fail and the rest might be fairly good or average, that's to let you know that everyone's level of understanding can never be the same so saying that security of the wallet is something any newbie can learn in a short period is true to an extent cause some people find it very tough to understand something.
That's why I'll always recommend Bitcointalk to anyone that wants to learn about Bitcoin, it is the best forum for learning that you can think of. When i joined, i felt i already knew a lot but i came across more informations that i never knew and still learning. There's no one that would join the forum and won't find it interesting.
