This note looks at physical attacks on bitcoin and crypto-asset holders as adaptive processes rather than simple “wrench attack” events.

The core idea is that technical constraints do not have fixed effects under coercion. What matters is also how the attacker interprets them: as genuine incapacity, temporary friction, deception, or evidence of outside intervention. The same mechanism can therefore lead to abandonment, circumvention, delay, or escalation.

The model separates physical control from asset control, tracks attacker beliefs and available signals, and treats time as several competing processes rather than assuming that delay is inherently protective.

Interested especially in criticism of the model: missing attack paths, bad assumptions, categories that do not survive real cases, or situations it cannot represent cleanly.

Interested especially in criticism of the model: missing attack paths, bad assumptions, categories that do not survive real cases, or situations it cannot represent cleanly.

Feed better prompts and don't be cheap on the model.

Hey @stompix. Thank you for your direct feedback. Yeah we used AI as disclosed in the page and yes those misses in language were mine. But I hope you find the core idea of breaking down the dynamic of an attack useful.

Since you're the kind of person that reads critically, maybe take a look at https://github.com/bitryonix/boomerang_design as well. The purpose of the note was to better understand what an attack is and what parts it has so that we have a better framework to compare the effectiveness of defense mechanisms and try to go beyond the individualistic measures. In boomerang we have tried to propose a cold storage that increases the costs of attack by making withdrawal non-deterministic and weaving duress checks into the process

Yeah. But you know, people talk. People love to talk. Even if their livelihood depended on not doing so. People talk and there's no way out of it.
