I noticed something over the last few years: Often times, shortly before Bitcoin starts a really strong breakout, Monero (XMR) starts pumping first. Usually a few days or at least hours prior.
Am I seeing ghosts or is that a real pattern?
Will provide some trading view pics soon - the software I used to compare two prices along-side just doesn't work the way I wish right now, will try again tomorrow.

I can't wait to see the pictures. However, what I have noticed and still confirmed again is that Monero moved in correlation with Bitcoin, and this has been historical, just as most of altcoins do. If there are indications of initial movements before Bitcoin moves eventually, it could either be a mere coincidence or a prevailing effect started its impact stronger on it than Bitcoin. I doubt if Bitcoin hasn't been excited at that point too, but at times, some altcoins lead the race initially.

what timeframe has been considered? likewise one year / whole trading history? this could be possible because there are also other elements that can bring such trade mechanics, something classic and cyclic likewise the "bearmarkets"... I would not surprise both coins can act in such way, but this could be not enough since correlation doesn't imply causation

It’s pretty much possible that what you’re notice is an actual and genuine correlation, but one thing I’ll advise you about would be actually treating this as some kind of reliable indicator. It’s possible for Monero and Bitcoin to move independently for some certain periods due to liquidity, news, market dynamics and what have you. But if you’re actually able to pull up a consistent multiple historical and cyclical record on this and actually check how often Monero moves has actually preceded significant Bitcoin price breakout, and when I say historically patterns, I’m not just talking about a few years, then maybe we can actually treat that as an indicator.

Sometimes Monero decouples from Bitcoin, but the relationship you described is a coincidence that occurs infrequently from what I can see. Most of the time they move in tandem in the same direction. It’s true that Monero started going up before Bitcoin during the most recent pump, but so was Zcash. ZEC went up more than both coins and it’s possible that being in the same category, other coins like Monero and Dash are benefitting from the hype it’s getting.

This is a good observation but there is no valid indication that the increase in the price of Monero (XMR) has a direct effect on the price of bitcoin, maybe its just an instinct which seems valid but how about we look at it from a different perspective. 1. Traders/Investors take profits after an increase in the price of Monero and buy actual real coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum and others which forces the bull action. 2. There could be an internal buy pressure that forces the correlation between Monero and Bitcoin but might not signal a bull run season. There could be the slightest chance that it could be an internal set-up and not an actual Bitcoin price action. Is it just my imagination or this could be valid?

When bitcoin was increasing very massively in the last bull run, monero was first sluggish, but in 2025, that was when those big people start influencing moneo. I think Blackrock is even among them, so as ZEC pumped, monero and dash followed. It is very funny that those big people focused on ZEC instead of XMR. Dash is not really a privacy coin but it is to some level, it is the coin that is falling back more among them.

You're onto something. XMR started going up about 6-7 weeks before the whole market reversed. Basically while BTC was in the accumulation at the bottom, it simply started pumping. Not sure what to think of that. It hasn't really happened on that scale before, so not sure if it should be called a correlation yet. Quite possible just an outlier.

I believe the interesting question here isn't just whether or not XMR moves up before BTC, because it does, but whether it does it enough to be of predictive value. The catalysts for privacy coins can be different from the markets and the XMR move may take place without the rest of the markets. It would be helpful to see some BTC breakouts compared to XMR, as well as ZEC, DASH and maybe ETH during the same time. When the pattern consistently appears as XMR leads those assets by a significant number of hours or days, then it isn't just a handful of coincidences.

From the beginning of august, xmr and btc price has decoupled multiple time, more obvious on the lower timeframe, xmr is going up forming a ladder while btc is more violent but im seeing no correlation. xmr has quite different chart to bitcoin after being shilled by the likes of arthur hayes, it's starting to create its own chart even though on the higher time frame xmr still follow bitcoin price trajectory.

Am I seeing ghosts or is that a real pattern?
It is not a real pattern. This pattern has been repeated with Bitcoin's price surge, linking it to stock markets, bonds, large tech companies, gold, and today we're with Monero; tomorrow we'll hear it with Ethereum and others.

This pattern has been repeated with Bitcoin's price surge, linking it to stock markets, bonds, large tech companies, gold, and today we're with Monero; tomorrow we'll hear it with Ethereum and others. Bitcoin experience lots of cycle, then usually people always link its movement on those current trending assets like tech companies, bonds, stock, gold and now they point out Monero. What also data stated that Bitcoin correlations usually occurs depends on the current situation of the market. There are studies from year 2024 - 2026 which it shows that BTC sometimes moves together with stocks and also there are times with gold. But those correlations which they have notice will just occur temporarily, so this is not reliable signals to look at. If someone claims that BTC pumps just because of good situation happened on Monero, I think this is just a coincidence and monero didn't do anything to help Bitcoin to pump. If they want to read about correlation topic they can read that here https://btcoak.com/correlations and here to https://managementscienceresearchjournal.com/index.php/msr/article/view/212

Hmm. Are we sure it's about XMR itself, or is it because of the recent rise in BTC's price? Since XMR is tied to BTC, it would likely rise as well because most pairs are XMR/BTC. So when USD/BTC rises, XMR would likely rise as well.
What would signal that XMR or any privacy coin is the narrative? I think the current narrative dominating the crypto sphere is still meme coins, not yet the privacy coins XMR offers.

By the way, for what it's worth, Monero wasn't the only outlier here. OKB, the token of OKX exchange started pumping at about the same time, a few weeks before the whole market exploded upwards: Still don't know what to think of it, but if there's correlation, then it's not unique to XMR.

I have not noticed this correlation before so I'm anxious to see more data regarding this. This I will be keen to see is how long Bitcoin pumps when such signals prints, and if the reverse also holds, I mean if Monero also influence Bitcoin retracements. If this is true, we can use such information for short term trading or those that wants to consolidate on their spot purchase for long term holding.
