In this present day, technology has really advanced a lot, making things very easy, fast and convenient for humans without having to stress too much or work too hard.

Now my question:
Is the advancement of technology actually making humans more productive, improving our skills or are we gradually losing our basic skills and some other essential skills, since we are now dependent on technology for everything?
Are we becoming less productive, losing our problem solving abilities, critical thinking and creativity?

We can't avoid technological progress in fact almost every decade there's always a new technological development. And of course, with every tech advancement we can't avoid two possible outcomes both negative and positive but it all depends on how you adapt.

On one hand technological developments genuinely boost our productivity and even open up new skills. But if you become overly dependent on technology, it can clearly turn negative because it risks weakening basic abilities like critical thinking, memory, and independent problem-solving.

So to deal with it our view on technological development should be balanced. Technological advancements should be used without sacrificing human capacity that has basic thinking abilities. What I mean is we need to limit our dependence, for example in terms of basic skills, don't rely on technology for everything, and always use technology as a tool not a brain replacement so your creativity and independence remain sharp.

Isn’t it obvious that the advancement in technology has actually help human in productivity by reducing time to actually get a work done, it now take lesser to get our work done which is directly related to productivity. I don’t think the advancement of technology is making human loss their skill, the technology only improves on the skill and facilities but it’s doesn’t change the main idea.

I know you may be referring to some AI here, well, the AI has actually made us lazy because we don’t have to go stress ourselves much when conducting a research. We only give it some prompt and it comes up with things we want, this is definitely affecting our critical reasoning ability because we didn’t do the job without the use of AI and we could just forget sooner than expected, But is doesn’t make us less productive actually.

We can’t give a general answer to this question because whether you’re becoming more productive or more lazier with the advancement of technology fully depends on the person involved.

But on average, technological advancement are making humans more productive and it helps in research and improving skills because you can learn about anything from the comfort of your home through the internet and that will save you the time you could have spent searching for something offline or without internet.

Quote from: Jasmyne
Are we becoming less productive, losing our problem solving abilities, critical thinking and creativity?

Talking about Creativity, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving skills, those that utilize these technological tools to improve their skill are the ones that are benefiting from it and their ability is increasing faster than it should. But those that are completely dependent on the technologies to solve their problems and think for them are the ones losing their ability and skills because of the technological advancement.

So whether it’s making us less productive, or making us lose our Problem solving, Creativity and critical thinking is totally dependent on how someone chooses to use these tools because I know someone that becomes very smart and good at what he does because of how he utilized technologies like AI to aid his work and he’s becoming more productive, Creative and a better thinker.

Do you prefer to walk 3,966 miles or use a plane or train? Would you prefer to use hoes for farming rather than using machines to till the soil? There is no contradiction in the fact that advances in technology have improved human lives. Workers have achieved more with technological tools, thereby making work more productive.

The belief that technology has made people less creative is subjective. For me, I do not think so because these technological tools are products of creative thinking. The human brain is so powerful that nothing would stop its creative power.

The problem is that some people misuse, overuse, and abuse technology. They rely on these technological tools for everything they do, which can make them less creative. These tools make work faster and easier so that workers can save time and engage in productive thinking. An example is those who use AI for writing academic work because they are too lazy to work hard.

Evolution of technology always made people less productive on the bigger level, but humans adapt to the changes as well if it is necessary for their survival. Humans wants to reduce the workload of people, which means that is effectively reducing their work that also can lead to less potential workers over the generations.

You actually made a great point here and at this point all I can say is, it solely depends on we individuals, how we use this tools. The usage will determine if it will have more of a positive effect than a negative effect on us or not because to be truthful technology has really help us a lot, even in economic growth.
So anything with a positive side, will always have a negative side, people use technology to become more creative,  to enhance their skills while others become too dependent on it and lose essential skills.

I would agree on the fact that technology is actually making man lazy, but still it reduces the stress of man by about 70%, depending on what kind of tech it is. Basically if you think about it, humans keep creating technology and with each failure, it often gets advanced for more convenience. Indirectly if we humans were actually losing our basic critical thinking, how do we end up creating more techs? That's the question you should ask. I find it intriguing because no matter how convenient a technology is, it's still man made which makes it vulnerable. So perhaps what I am trying to say is that not everyone can be creative, because as humans we don't have the same brain and capacity, so we often handle what we can do. Imagine everyone has the knowledge on creating technology who will buy from who? So I just think we are working in circles what goes around comes around. You bought a laptop to help you reduce your stress at work. That laptop based on its upgrades and new features, helps you run your documents faster and maybe those documents are based on a house plan that you are planning on selling to a construction company, would you rather start using paper instead because you think tech makes you lazy ?.So you see we are the ones making use of technology....that's all......

Well new technology is often built to increase productivity and efficiency but it can be hard to measure the subtle or ripple effects of these changes. Take AI for example, it has in many cases quashed the lower end market of logo developers because you can often get a "good enough" logo more exactly tailored to your requirements with as many attempts as you can be bothered to describe. This put many people out of a job, but you could argue freed them up to do different and more productive tasks, or compete for the higher end of the market which would have fewer customers. The self ordering kiosks and self checkout are another example of increased productivity from a business perspective - as it reduces costs and errors. When we talk about productivity in these examples it has maybe shifted from human activity into forms of automation. This does have negative effects on the workers because they have to reskill in to new areas, but having a "job for life" may be a thing of the past.

The goal of technological progress is to increase productivity. So yes, technologies make human labor more productive. However, some skills are lost or weakened (for example, the ability to do mental arithmetic has weakened with the advent of calculators). At the same time, new skills emerge to replace them (for example, vibe coding, prompt engineering). These are, so to speak, applied skills.

As for basic skills, such as cognitive abilities and especially the ability to concentrate, they weaken. The reason is the widespread decline in interest in reading books and long articles. Information is now obtained from short posts, notes, or videos.

Humans deserve rest too because over the years, they have been using their brain to build technologies that will lessen their task so that the brain doesn't get too stressed as a result of critical reasoning to proffer solution to a problem. Advancement in technology is not aimed at making humans to become lazy but it's just an idea to assist mankind. It is true that human task will reduce since many modern technology can do almost everything but we shouldn't also forget that it's same humans that builds these technologies and it took them a lot to achieve. We will not become less productive because we will still need to keep these technologies in check from time to time to know if they're functioning as expected.

No one loses their basic skills. Thanks to technology:
- the productivity of skilled individuals increases, and they acquire new skills;
- unskilled individuals gain new skills, and generate new productivity.

If a supporting technological component were to disappear, everything would revert to square one.

For me, I don’t see it negatively that we’re becoming more dependent on technology cause I believe that’s just a part of innovation.  If we look back to our prehistoric time, from stone age, humans developed and innovate to be able to use more advanced tools like metals and iron. They also became dependent on those tools, but did humans stop innovating? No. We also reached to industrial age where humans developed and started using machineries. And now we’ve reached to a point where we become dependent on technology, but the progress and innovation doesn’t stop. It actually makes human more creative and use their critical thinking because even if we’re already technologically advanced, we still keep on developing and innovating something else.

What basic skill are you talking about? The skill of using your hands to row a boat, or the skill of walking for miles just to get to the next town? I don't understand how people are saying technology makes people lazy. How can you call me lazy simply because I chose to do things in a more efficient way? Am I supposed to remain stagnant and not evolve? How are we even having a debate if technology has made humans more productive? It has not only made humans more productive, but it has also made it easier. If you're going to call me lazy for using a washing machine to wash my clothes, then I would rather be lazy. I would rather be lazy and heat my food in the microwave than heat it on the stove. There are things we don't even need to debate. Or do you want to talk about how technology has improved our medicine and health sector? Maybe pregnant women are now lazy because they are given
In the world we live in, we shouldn't even be having this debate. Worst of all, we can't have this debate in a place that technology made possible.

The thing about technology is that the skills that we think it's top notch will be done by technology, eliminating one skill. But does it mean that it won't create another. What about operation of the machine. That's a skill. Repair of the machine. That's a skill. So eliminating one skill and creating another is what technology will do. To accomplish more now will be much easier then before. Productivity becomes at a faster rate. My only issue is that, in as much as we have tis technology, let it be that if one day it's not there, hope we will still be able to carry on with our lives.

Anybody who believes that technology advancement is a setback for human knowledge is not being logical about such conclusion. This is because one can never have every information grasped in their hands all at once as that could be time consuming and exhausting, but the use of AI has made such work easier and more efficient to enhance productivity.

Even with the use of AI and other tools, the general human knowledge is also used, because there is no use to these services without understanding the concept of the job in question. So in my opinion, technology does not limit our thinking capacity but has helped to shape and enhance it.

Now my question:
Is the advancement of technology actually making humans more productive, improving our skills or are we gradually losing our basic skills and some other essential skills, since we are now dependent on technology for everything?
If I'm trying to perform a task that has already been done and that with technology, I can get access to how it's been done and use it as a guide for what I'm doing, is it not supposed to be a good thing to me? Should I then look at technology in a negative light even though in the real sense it has been of great help to me?

Technology takes us from scratch to where we are in real time and allows to use our intellectual capacity to plan for the future that's outside the scope of what technology can profer. As far as we all know, we are humans that have limitations and with technology, most of those weaknesses becomes things we can easily hearnesed for our good.

No we are rather getting more productive..

The more technology gets better the more lesser opportunities, and we all know that we have to work before we get to live a comfortable life, so with that knowledge we will have work more to the standards of the technology and AI if not they will be used as replacements for us.

So life even gets more demanding, we will search more and work more on things that technology will not be able to get done without human assistance. As a matter of fact if you get lazy you will be left behind and as a result wouldn't be able to get a good life

So life doesn't get easier it gets more challenging

The answer to whether technological advancement is aiding human productivity or if it's making us to be more dependant on things that we can easily solve by ourselves depends on where you are looking at it from, it increases productivity for some while it is making many to be lazy, so it depends on what you're using technology for. For people who are productive already and needed technological innovations to make their work to be faster, convenient and most times accurate it is an asset for them to increase their output and become more successful. But for those who are totally lazy and dependant on technology to get all their results without wanting to make any inputs they are the ones that their personal capacities would be diminishing. I think that we shouldn't totally rely on AI for example to give us solutions all the time, you should only rely on them when necessary, if you allow AI to do everything that you are capable to do it means that you're reducing yourself to become totally dependant on them without which you cannot function optimally.

The hard work that needs to be done to develop technology and the new technology that is created as a result of it proves human productivity. Earlier, people used to do the work manually, which used to waste a lot of time, but instead of doing it manually, robots are being created and AI is being created, which is why difficult tasks are becoming easier. And it takes a lot of hard work and time to create a new technology. After that, it is possible to successfully carry out activities with it. People are now proving their productivity by focusing on increasing the efficiency of the new technologies that have been invented. For example, in the beginning, AI had many obstacles. Now, many tasks are being done by AI. And it is also being used as assistance through AI agents. Repeatable tasks are easier and take less time, where a person's whole day's work is being solved in a few moments. The reason for all this is that people are now working in a more productive way than before.
