Fresh Abduction of NYSC Corps Members

As of 26 August, about 15 NYSC members were abducted on their way back from orientation camp.

For those not familiar with the term NYSC, it is a Nigerian government program established in 1973 to involve graduates from Nigerian institutions in serving the country through unity and national service. The NYSC is now compulsory for job hunting. Which is one main reason why most graduates choose to come for the mandatory 3 weeks oreintation camp.

In a country where you cannot secure the lives of those involved in national service, why drag them out of their house? The roads are not safe, there is insecurity everywhere in the cities, why take people's children out of their house only for them to later be in the bush begging for ransom to be released?

The corps members were abducted along the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis in Kogi while travelling after completing their orientation camp.

They were traveling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.

I think they are relocating.

It's really unfortunate,I thought they wanted to scrap nysc out ,please they really need to do it,if they can't secure them ,why sending people's children to different state for the three weeks program knowing fully well that they are not safe , the road is not safe ,the country is not safe at all, imagine what they will be going through in the hands of those bandit,let Nigeria not happen to you,now they have to deal with the ransom payment, plus what they are going through in the bush ,it is really well.

They were traveling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.

Boro camp in Bayelsa usually brings different drivers from transport companies they partner with on the last day of orientation camp that will convey corpers to the state the corpers come from. An escort of military soldiers is assigned to the vehicles, but it's only within Bayelsa. If the vehicle has crossed into another state, the military will return to Bayelsa.

My suspect is an insider who knows how Bayelsa treats corp members. This is a well-planned abduction.

I expect more of this to happen not because I am happy seeing that, but our leaders are enjoying through that way, it has been come normal for our leaders to come out and said that this adoption has become a normal business. I don't pray for any politicians child to be adopted, but i think the reason why they kept quiet without showing any remorse in all these kind things that are happening, just because non of their family members are involved, that is why they just try to pretend as if they are caring for us not knowing that they are at the background pushing it because they are enjoying a lot of money there. I feel absolutely so bad for this NYSC Corps members, after the service now NO job and now they have adopt them, I pray may Almighty Allah guide them out to meet their parents.

How would they care when it's not affecting their families, if any top politician wakes up one morning to a call that members of his families has been adopted by kidnapper or bandits, they'll see the need to take security of the nation seriously, but then they've sent most of their families abroad and safe from kidnapping and banditry so news about adoption by kidnappers would just look common to them.

Another thing is that those kidnappers have insiders within our security system that give them legit intel on people they adopt it might not be in all cases of adoption but most cases, that's how corrupt our security system is. Moreover our politicians use some of these kidnappers as thugs during elections to steal ballot boxes, therefore they're under their backings.

It's quite unfortunate that we are still hearing news about abduction because for some couple of months now everywhere was very quiet and horrible news such as abduction and killings reduced drastically and it seems they have now resumed operations again, I came across the video of the scene where the kidnapped took place but I was thinking it was an old video that was posted but seeing this has proven that the video was a recent one and it's very sad that this corpers couldn't get home safely after spending 3 weeks undergoing training at NYSC camp.

I think if this NYSC thing is no longer safe for young graduates they should better scrap it or better still asked every graduate to serve at their respective states in other to secure their lives, as at today we have lost many Youths emanating from kidnaps while on their way from camps and even where they are posted, the federal government need to scrap NYSC if more Youths are going to die or being kidnapped through this means.

To go to camp is now a big problem, because what is this country turning into? Imagine people that are coming back from camp got kidnapped, and they went to camp to achieve their dreams by serving their country, to be honest, at this point i am scared to of going to camp, many students who are yet to go to camp will now be scared because of what happened to their colleagues.

This is the worst thing that is happening to Nigeria since i am in this country, what is the reason of having leaders? What is the reason of voting them to make the country better? Is it a crime for someone to vote them to get the power they want and start frustrating our lives? This country need a good leaders, not the ones that the country is bleeding and they are pretending like they don’t know anything about it.

You can do well by adding a link to the news where more details can be gotten for clarity sake, I think the national youths service corps should be cancelled until government take the issues of security serious, because is too risky to travel in the spirit of NYSC which original intention is to integrate citizens into various cultures and places out of their original domain, but now that security is a special concern, I don't see the reason to keep risking people life sending them to unknown places to them without providing them the needed security for their safety.

The Killing and adoption that reduced was because, the government in power might have given those terrorists some cash to calm them down for sometime, perhaps because of the election that's coming up very soon, I can never trust our government, especially this government desperate government of Tinubu that's ready to do anything to remain in power beyond 2027, I just pity the innocent corp members that was kidnapped.

Wow so things had gone so bad that even a crop member who was sent out by the government is also getting abducted, I can feel all the hardships in paying for school, sacrifice, and those sleepless nights…parents borrowing, selling, under the hot sun just for a child can graduate…the big question we all should be asking is I think NYSC, which is supposed to be "service to the nation", is turning into fear and danger…. For the families right now it’s anxiety every minute. No sleep. Praying for a call. Wonder from God sent…

The news about scrapping NYSC was fake. It is here to stay. 
NYSC is now mandatory in the country. To get a simple job for minimum wage, the employer does ask for an NYSC certificate. 
I heard the program has been increased from three weeks to six weeks. It was trending all over social media. How true is this? 
If this is true, I advise every graduate to stop going for NYSC programs. After all, the program is not helpful to the youth.

Seeing this news breaks my heart because I can imagine how the family who were happy a few weeks ago that their child is serving the country, to now hear of that child being in the push. Think of what will happen to them. Torture, rape, and all sorts of atrocities will be done to them. People are heartless enough to harm their fellow humans because of money.

NYSC is now becoming something difficult students are being optimistic about. Why will I go and serve in my father's land where I am prone to being kidnapped, robbed, accident due to bad roads. ₦77k doesn't worth a human life. This year alone, alot of corpers has been kidnapped and the kidnappers are always demanding for amount of money that are unrealistic. Before the government's will even think of trying to rescue them,it  might take alot of time (at times they don't even care). We have Over hundreds of thousands of Soldiers, police, FRS corps yet travelling to another state is still risky.

The government are not doing anything reasonable to stop this kidnapping. This administration should step up and do everything to protect we the citizens... they should even scrap this NYSC of a thing, if youth lives are being at risks.. I myself will be serving Next year, Na God go protect person

Yes NYSC isn’t going to be scrapped rather it is going to be reformed and they are currently working on the process. NYSC is a  mandatory serving program so that’s why it is required by employers and it is a proof of your successful completion of Bachelors degree.

And yes the program has been approved to be extended  to Six weeks but it is not yet implemented meaning these Corp members that were kidnapped were in Camp for only three weeks.

This isn’t the first time they kidnapped Corp members though and these bandits kidnap even people that can’t afford to pay the Ransom they’re asking for because I heard that they’re asking the families of these members to pay up to 30 million for their ransom which obviously these families can’t afford.

Some families are even asking for fundraisers from the general public, I’ve seen a fundraiser flyer for one of the victims sef. And these isn’t the only kidnapping case that happen recently, bandit even kidnapped more than a whole village in Niger State, the Government seriously needs to do something about this.

Amids all these terrible events, these politicians are even more focused on the General Election coming up next year than they’re focused about the Security of their Citizens..
