I didn't know much about investment at that time but from what I found on the internet if some companies stocks could have been bought at that time the most profit could have been made from companies like Apple and NVIDIA, and the most profit would have been from Monster Beverage company. Although Bitcoin came later even then those who were able to buy Bitcoin around 2010 made a profit over these 25 years no other company's stock or anything else could have given that much profit. I don't mind not being able to invest in anything around 2001 but I will always regret not being able to invest in Bitcoin in 2010.

There is no guarantee that everyone who bought bitcoin in 2010 or somehow owned some bitcoin is successful today. Because at that time the price of bitcoin was very low, maybe a few years later when the price increased a little, they might have sold it at that time. However, those who are holding it till now or those who still have bitcoin in their wallet and have wallet access are really very lucky. And in 2010, you yourself might not have known that bitcoin would be so valuable by 2026. So after investing then, you would have held it for 16 years, how are you giving this guarantee? So now that there is time, bitcoin will remain, so I think it is more important to use the opportunity now. Instead of regretting not being able to do something in the past, should use the present opportunity.

they would had made more money than any of those other options listed above and that's the power Bitcoin holds and it can still do it again in the next 25 years.
The first part of your statement is true, bitcoin has given the most generous ROI in the shortest available timeframe of 17 years.
However, the profits recorded in bitcoin earlier cannot be achieved in the next 25 years. Even if bitcoin reaches $1m within the said timeframe, it is only less than 20X for those who started investing in 2025, but if we can calculate the ROI from when it traded at $0.01, that would be 7800000X. Still, it remains the a very good shot for digital investments.

Bitcoin probably won't do x100 or even x1000 like it did in the past. But compared to traditional asset, it still has the potential to deliver much higher return.

And if we're only talking about return, Bitcoin is still one of the best option for the next 25 years. But everything comes at a price. Higher returns also mean higher risk, and anyone choosing Bitcoin needs to understand that.

It looks true that ROI given by Bitcoin to its early investors may not be gained by people who are investing in Bitcoin right now. Still Bitcoin is good investment provided we are willing to hodl it for next 10 or 20 years. Nobody is sure about how much ROI Bitcoin will give in next 10 or 20 years, everyone is just making his guess. Seeing the adoption and popularity of Bitcoin, one thing is very obvious that price of Bitcoin in coming years will go high and its still a good option for long term investment.

If you had Rs 100,000 in 2001, where would you have invested it?

You have Bitcoin as an option when Bitcoin did not even exist in 2001, but I'll go for real estate here in our city, our city back then was only rural until it turned into a city in 2004, so if I have 2 hectares of land in my locality, that will cost millions of pesos.

Real estate is the best investment if your town just became a city because the national government will pour in infrastructure projects; you can also build apartments and make residual income in the process.

I will also invest in Bitcoin when it's created because it's an asset that will give me huge profit.

If we're gonna talk about the year 2001 (tho I'm still a child back then), but IF I have an option to make investment at that time, I'd choose real estate. Property and land will surely last a long time if we're not gonna include the possibility of natural disasters and such. Back then, a land costs way cheaper than today's price so it's definitely a great investment for longer years. Aside from the appreciated value of the land over time, you can also earn passive income if you're gonna rent out the property. So you could be earning a monthly passive income from 2001 up to now, and at the same time your land value increases as well.

Tho the other thing about real estate is that you'll also be having expenses for repair and improving the property. While if you have gold, you'll just have to keep it without other expenses. Tho you can't have passive income with it.

He gave examples that how Rs 100k PKR from 2001 could have value (or purchasing power) of only around 9 thousand PKR today. Then we looked at national savings. Rs 100k PKR could have grown 15 lakh PKR which is around 11.5% in 25 years, if we take the average rate every year. When he calculated real estate with 13% annual growth Rs 1 lakh PKR could have grown into 21.2 lakh PKR in 25 years. The Gold was more interesting . Its one tola was around 8k in 2001 Rs 100kPKR were equal to 12.5 tolas at that time. Today tola is around 465,000.It could be 58 lakh PKR today.

There is nothing funnier talking about investing and using thousands, millions, and lakhs, and God knows what tola is!
Like seriously, just use common percentages and numbers like the rest of the world does, probably the lack of understanding of how this all works comes from that!

Also, those numbers are meaningless unless you do an inflation adjustment or you compare this to a somewhat stable currency.

The idea that a 'lack of understanding' is expressed by the use of PKR and lakhs is very humorous for me to see.Like for reference, I used Pakistani market and a tola is a well known standard unit of gold used in south asian markets. If you prefer to see everything in terms of stable currency and inflation adjustment, that's fine but don't dismiss the entire idea as 'meaningless' just because it was not presented in your way.

Agreed, it makes sense real estate could be a good opportunity especially when a city is developing and yeah bitcoin was not included in my original comparison (of 2001), because it didn't exist back in 2001 and I added it later when a few people asked about it (just for comparison).

Yes no doubt their is a bitcoin regret in many people.Apple, NVIDIA, Monster beverages and even amazon are great examples, but none of them were more promising at the time as the return is evident today, but the risk was very real back then which is the tricky part in investing.

But the biggest surprise for me was mutual funds that had given a very high return in that period , including around 430% growth. So if we invested Rs 1lakh PKR and it grew 25%, it would almost become Rs 40 millions today . Offcourse these are the past records and cannot guaranteed the same progress in future but still it was huge. it was an interesting session and made me think what is my money doing while i m not using it?
If you had Rs 100,000 in 2001, where would you have invested in?
Boy, I did not know you were from Pakistan. What session did you attend?

BTW, before reading your post, I chose gold because I did not know mutual funds could give this much profit, although I was about to choose mutual funds as well because I knew they have made people a lot of money but I did not have any number in mind that is really big. I mean, gold only made 5.8 million, while mutual funds could have made 40 million, that's insane.

People made fortunes in this period but only those who had 1 lac in that era, even people earning 1 lac today are not the same as people earning 30k 5 years ago. Inflation has hit harder and the suffering is still the same. The salaries there are still the same, people don't have enough knowledge about investment and all that, but sessions like this can give everyone a great sense of investment.

So if you can please send me a link if it was live, or you can PM me here.

Unfortunately, there is no link because it was a physical session but their investment differences and trends were surprising. Financial literacy can really make a big difference.

I cannot comprehend how much it was on that year of 2001 but based on my search, it's approximately $2,100 on that year and if it's valued today, it's lost its value in half. I think if I have already that money back then, I'll find small plots of lands because they're cheap before and I am sure maybe I can buy two or three small lots at that time and will find in commercial places. That's probably the best investment that I'll have because I am not a fan of mutual funds but maybe some stocks at that time was really good to invest with.

I personally don't think that references from the past can do any good for the people in the present, because things work differently even in each decade, so referencing to financial investment decisions from 25 years ago and using it to educate youngsters in today's world is not the greatest idea, in my opinion. The biggest example of this is the entry of Bitcoin in between this period. If someone had invested the same amount in Bitcoin right after it was available in the market at around 2010, they could make way more than what someone would make from mutual funds from 2001.

Now, talking about the same thing again, we can't even compare investments made in Bitcoin at the initial stage with investments made in the recent times, because there will always be a huge difference in the profits one could get from now versus then. This is why, when we are talking about financial literacy or teaching people how investments can shape their futures, we should use at least newer things, so that they can understand that investing money in mutual funds at present might not bring them the same yields that they could get 25 years ago.
I agree that's a good point but if we prefer to see a combination of historical and current examples, because then it's a better picture of long term investment and compounding even if the return is not exactly the same today.
